The average batting average in both leagues is .250 as of today.

The national league have far more players hitting for higer averages. The batting averages in the National league include pitchers batting every 9th time up when they don't get pinch hitters. That has to impact the overall team batting average.

The National League has become the better , more competitive league . The American League is being hurt by the number of really awful , tanking teams in it these days .

Meanwhile, Mookie is having a mediocre June, albeit hitting for a bit more power than he did in May. The only thing he is consistently doing well is getting on base. He is taking walks at a good rate.

With Mookies mediocre season does anyone think he deserves an AS appearance? I dont. Not this year anyway. Not hating, just being realistic.

If you want him to both get $300 million and not see him in another uniform there is a very good chance you will be disappointed.

At the halfway point he has 2.8 WAR which is a far cry from the 10.9 WAR from last years MVP season .

He has been a huge disappointment to date this season.

.364 BA in Fenway last year, at this point he is hitting .273 at Fenway at this point.

This team as a whole is just not playing good at home this year, and that's hard to figure out.

Guys have down seasons and this is certainly one for Mookie. Good thing his “bad” season is still well above a lot of MLB OFers. That, and his popularity is sky high, which we all know plays into the voting big time. Especially the GG.

Anyway, the kids a stud and should be fine. If he wants 300m he needs to figure it out and step it up the rest of the year and next.

One thing we can say for sure Yellich is having a season for the ages. Can you believe it he has 17 Stolen bases and caught just once.

He is having the kind of season where Babe Ruth and Ted Williams are smiling down.

SP! My Man!!

I'm looking at what Mookie is doing this year as a potential saving grace for the Sox in signing him. As frustrating as it is to watch him and as frustrating as it is to see the Sox struggling his struggles may drive his price down enough to make him palatable for JH. Right now anyone signing him would be taking a chance that last year was a huge outlier and the "real Mookie Betts" is somewhere between 2018 & 2019. That's not a bad ballplayer but it's not a $300M ballplayer either.

The same with JBJ.. his early season swoons may keep his price down so the Sox can afford him. I'll take those two guys in the OF every day and, as they say, twice on Sunday. Especially in Fenway which needs two CF'ers out there - one to play CF and the other to play RF.

The Sox should look into trading Betts next month to see what he is worth to other teams. They can always give him his $300mill or whatever after 2020...

I think it would be a huge mistake to sign Mookie. And it’s hard to say that. Another 300 mil contract is going to handcuff this team for the next 5-7 years. Trade him and get some arms and rebuild the minor league system! If we’re all being honest we may need to trade DD too....

Sarcasm? Sox will likely not try to trade Betts, but eventually he may price himself out of Boston. Someone called JD an enigma, but Betts seems to better fit that description. There is a huge gap between his performance last season and the rest of his career. He is very talented and an all around good player, but its hard to really say how good he is. He might be more like Yaz in some ways than Willie Mays, as he was sometimes being likened too. It is not easy to predict his performances year to year.

Its huge a mistake to sign him at 300MIl. It wouldn't be for 200 though. He could end up regretting to not accept that deal if he plays like this for the remainder of this year and next. Trout is the ONLY player who if I was the GM would give 300Mil or more. Harper and Machado are not 300MIL player nor close it and neither is Betts

They are now.

And Betts could well become another one. But is a franchise that gives out those contracts doing it to win championships or to excite the fans with star players?

Betts at 26 has 123 HRS in 726 games so far, Mays at 26 had 187 HRS in 762 games after his season. Better way to compare. Edited by OH FOY!

Agree.

I saw 2 HRS in my Life that I couldn't believe, 1 was Dave Kingman in Fenway, the other was Mays at Shea Stadium. He hit the clock in Center Field on a line, and still rising, that I swear would have been a 500 footer. Freakin thing made a bang, the whole place was silent.

Willie Mays is a Hall of Famer . One of the greatest to ever play the game . It's not fair to use him as a yardstick.

Yeah, it's like, let's make Mookie look as bad as possible by comparing him to Trout and Mays, 2 of the 5 best to ever play.

Well, a lot of fans on this board want to give Betts a 300 Million contract. So to me he would have to be close to trout range to give him that. And hes not

Based on what? Stanton, Machado and Harper all got 300 million, and Betts is better than them. Just because you don't think he's "worth it" doesn't mean other teams don't. Mookie is one of the elite talents in the league.

And for the record - Machado has been on fire lately and is having a very good season in San Diego.

A player needs to consistently be one of the top players in the league to justify such a big long term contract. Mookie hasn't been nearly the player he was last year. He has time to show what he can do this season but he needs to be one of our most important players and so far he has not been that.

Like I've said many times, just because some other GM's gave out stupid contracts it doesn't mean we have to do the same.

Harper and Machado are terrific baseball players . Are they overpaid ? Absolutely. As are many other athletes, entertainers and people in every walk of life . And many hard working people are underpaid. That is how it is , like it or not . But too many fans are worried about saving the owners money . Why ? Will they lower the price of tickets , beer and hot dogs ? Of course not . The best players are expensive. If you want a championship team, it can be expensive. Of course there are exceptions, but the best teams usually are the high payroll teams . If you want to keep a Mookie Betts , you have to pay him . If you don't want to pay him , don't complain when his replacement is not nearly as good.

Getting the most expensive players doesn't translate to winning the world series. Yankees are prime example. They have ONE championship since year 2000 and they have paid for MANY expensive players. It's all about getting good value for your buck. Right now the Phillies are not getting good value for their 330 millions contract. Neither are the yanks with Stanton. If the Red Sox pay Betts 300 million they are not going to be getting good value for that deal.
