What are the chances of Porcello being offered a contract extension?

You have to hope Porcello will go through one of his hot streaks before the trade deadline. In turn, the Red Sox can shop him at the trade deadline and get some team with championship aspirations to overpay.

The question with Porcello isn’t “does he merit an extension?” The Sox have thrown around enough of those and have two big looming questions ahead of him.

The question is - does he merit a qualifying offer? While the QO skill very likely represent more a higher AAV than Porcello will get as a free agent, it’s only a one year deal. And as Porcello will still be only 30 this off-season, his chances of landing a multi year deal decrease rapidly with each passing season...

It's tough to find a mid rotation guy that is consistent I find. Porcello started the year slow but he usually turns in 6 plus decent innings and keeps us in the game. As you said, Porcello getting older decreases the chance of him getting a long term deal however 30 in baseball terms is still young. I'm not sure who we go after if Porcello leaves..... Maybe Wright will come back?

Seems like we are counting on our problem child , Steven Wright , more than we should be . ( He will solidify the bullpen and also the rotation. ) I think , if we take problem child Wright back at all , there has to be three conditions. 1 - Don't hang the knuckleball. 2 - Don't beat your wife . 3 - Don't take steroids. On second thought, let's not take him back at all . Let's find a better way .

It is almost laughable that a discussion about the rotation and the bullpen rests on the extreme talent levels of Velaquez, Johnson and Wright. Meanwhile guys like Poyner show no real ability. Brewer is a hole (deep hole) filler.

Another poster mentioned "complacency" by DD as a factor. I think that mind set infected the whole organization down through the players, some of whom converted the 2018 season into into longer term money (Sale, Eovaldi, Bogaerts) . Others are over their respective hills and rolling south fast ( Pedroia, Pearce) . Some are hard to calculate their true value ( Bradley, Nunez, Leon, even Holt). One is just hard to figure where his head is ( Devers). One is a true professional who delivers the goods (JDM) .

The problem with the 2019 version of the Sox is that they are just not interesting, exciting and for now, not competitive. If Chavis sticks at the parent club level and learns on the job , like Bogaerts did and Devers might, then he may be the only bright spot this year. Darwizon maight have the same chance later in the summer. Right now, these guys as a team are yawn inducing. Cora needs to figure out how to get them playing aggressive, competitive ball again.

I would give him the QO.

No real point in the QO for a middling guy like Porcello. If you could get a 1a supp pick, then it’s worth the risk, but a 4th round supp isn’t worth it unless the players is 100% guaranteed to decline it

Getting back on his game now, good for him and for us.

I'd happily sign him to a 3 year 45 million extension or something similar.

But I'm afraid there aren't enough slices left in the pie for that.

It would have to be a short contract. He has so many innings on his arm at his age.

He does, but he's been durable as hell up till now.

I know and his delivery looks like he should be able to throw for a long time. I guess it's just sitting it the back of my mind.

I apologize if this is a controversial opinion, but it seems to me like Rick Porcello was born to pitch for the Red Sox, based on his strengths, his physique, and his mentality. I don't know if they'll offer him, but I would hate to see him leave

I've got no problem with that post. IMO he's one of those nice guys who bonds the clubhouse together.

That's not to say that I want to keep him if his ERA balloons up to 6+, but IMO what he brings to the clubhouse is a plus that's worth consideration.

The big issue will be financial...

How so? How would it defer for another team?

Well he's a ground ball guy. When he misses, he gets a lot of fly balls. The Monster saves a bunch of those from going out, even though he does already allow a ton of home runs when he's not at his best. He's not that biggest guy you'll ever seen, but he has the perfect pitcher's body, and doesn't need to throw hard. I feel like a couple of other teams would try to turn him into a flamethrower, or something he's not. Maybe not now, but when he was younger definitely

Of course it makes sense to give Porcello a QO. If he accepts, we get him back on a one-year deal, which would be ideal.

If he declines, we at least get something back, which is better than getting nothing back.

Unless he gets the kimbrel/kuekel treatment....

In which case the Sox break even against NOT offering the QO...

Right, but that's not a reason for the Sox not to give a QO.

Unless they're more concerned with Porcello's welfare after he leaves the team than they are with the team's welfare.

Oh, I 100% agree we should offer the QO. I was merely opining that if he turns it down it doesn’t guarantee we will get a comp pick...

Which is the exact same situation if it isn’t offered at all.

For one year, the risk is actually minimal...

Agreed. He might be streaky at times but I like Porcello. He’s a solid 3rd or 4th guy. Hell at this point he’s well out performing our Ace.

No, he is not outperforming Sale. As bad as Sales stats have been, they are still significantly better than Porcello's in every category.

Except for HR/9.

The 'Porcello' should be renamed the 'Sale'.
