What are the chances of Porcello being offered a contract extension?

Recommended Posts

Unless I haven't heard something that has come up it's looking more and more like Porcello is gone after this season? He said he desperately wants to stay in Boston and it sounds like he would negotiate a decent contract, but from the sounds of it.... management doesn't overly want Porcello here as the discussions have completely stopped. I am a huge Porcello fan and always have been, but the guy is far from anything decent this season. Any thoughts on what might happen with Porcello in the off season?

Also.... sorry if a thread was created on this already, I was looking for one but couldn't find it. If there is..... mods can delete this and point me in the right direction :)

The problem with extensions is that some guys get them and some guys don't. Maybe not the best thing for morale .

Maybe Porcello is secretly playing bad so he doesn't get extended.....

Extensions are only part of the picture. There are huge discrepancies in what guys make anyway. Morale on just about every team should suck, based on pay inequity.

can I go negative numbers on this poll?

What if he takes a hometown discount and signs to 10 thousand a year? You never thought about that did you!!!!

Sure if he comes at a discount. 4/50M and end the season on high note. Dude pitches 33 starts every year.

He said he really wants to stay in Boston, so it's not completely crazy that he might make a really good offer if it means he can stay. He was obviously excellent in his CY Young season, and very good last year..... I do think he turns it around at some point this season. At this point I'm just hoping he can make it longer than 3 innings.

It's hard to know how GMs would value Porcello. I think $50-60M/4 sounds about right, but look at Keuchel.

I'd probably offer him $13M x 4 with some incentives.

His ERA needs to be better than 12 or whatever god awful thing it's at right now for any manager to take him half serious.

He apparently tried to work out a deal with the Red Sox in spring training, even expressing a willingness to take a "discount" (quotes due to his performance since then) in order to do so, but the team couldn't make it work financially.

With the Sale and Bogaerts extensions, and any future contract for Betts, taking priority, it sure seems like Porcello will be the odd man out.

Wow, didn't realize that...… Guess the negotiation he made was not good enough. Unfortunately when you are as inconsistent as Porcello is, it's risky signing someone like that to a big extension. He isn't showing anything this season either that he can break out of that funk.... Though he was pretty decent last year. Seems he has a good year followed by a terrible year.

He’s going to need a major turnaround in either performance or salary expectations to get even a two year deal...

Yes, and on second thought, I think my offer is too high, even if he turns things around.

Unless he is willing to take a real discount in terms of money and years, he will be gone.

IMO, that's a shame. Not that I think he should get a long term contract, but I would like to see him stick around.

I'm in the same boat Kimmi, as inconsistent as he is..... The man can play some damn good baseball when he gets hot. He started the season last year on fire and had shades of his CY Young season. I think he has it in him to turn this season around throw some good pitches.

A really good rotation would pencil the current Porcello in as a #4 or #5 starter, and he would deliver the bullpen saving innings if not the low scoring wins. Very hard guy to figure out. My guess is that he has certain personality disorders that cause his mind to overrule his talent. Ever see him smile ?

One thing about Porcello ; at least he is durable . You can count on him to show up . Can't always say that about the others .

You can also count on him giving up dingers

His cy young season was a fluke. You're never seeing that again from him nor close to it

wow..... tad harsh...…

I can't remember his stats exactly last season and I know he definitely played more poor toward the end of the season but he started the season off red hot. He is inconsistent though I will give you that. But when he's on he is one of the best pitchers in the league and somehow his CY Young season he made sure he was on the entire season. I wouldn't say "He will never do it again" But I agree, I would be extremely surprised to see him have an identical season.

Porcello was excellent for us in the playoffs last year.

He also logged a lot of innings. That might have something to do with the poor start, not just the 'too much rest' thing.

I can't say as I've seen him smile - I wasn't watching for it. However, on the day in ST when the Sox had a moment of silence for Swi's recently passed brother Porcillo did put his arm around Swi's shoulders, gave him a 'shoulder hug' and a pat on the shoulder. My words don't due this justice, but it was a fine moment.

There's a picture of Porcello grinning after he hit a double last year. Nothing makes pitchers happier than getting a hit.

I thank for Porcello for career in Boston, and for the record, I was a Porcello hater at first, but overall, I think he earned the contract. I think its best we move on due to how much money is already invested in Price/Sale/Eovaldi and look for a cheaper option, but overall, he was good, although inconsistent.
