Sale would have improved over the beginning of the season one way or the other, but Leon is good for Sale. No question about it.

 

Well, I think you know why I posted that. Results from one game are not statistically significant. And statistics support that Leon is at the very least, an above average defensive catcher.

Also, no question as to who was the better overall player. Swihart has the ability to play 4 positions. Leon is capable of being a fat s*** on the bench.

 

The Sox didn’t need Swihart’s versatility. They needed a catcher.

 

And the idea that by playing more positions makes Swihart better is laughable. By that logic, Brock Holt is better than Mike Trout...

I liked Swihart, I supported Swihart, I thought he was going to be a star to be honest and I think A LOT of people on here and in general felt the same way. However, he never improved, and its clear other teams around the league don't think much of him either. He's on the Diamondbacks and can't get playing time on a team who has catchers like Carson Kelly (career negative WAR player), John Ryan Murphy (career negative WAR player and Caleb Joseph (sucks) and there is speculation Swihart could be DFA once Alex Avila comes off the DL. You guys need to realize he sucks, its okay to be wrong about a player.

I think we all wanted Swihart to break through at some point .Sandy has been beaten over the head by every fan every announcer.Do you know what I like about Sandy Leon ? The man knows his flaws shines and ignores the noise .Sandy is a no bat Catcher but the man is our leader .Sandy Leon who I buried over his bat has made me a fan .Sandy freaking Leon is the reason this staff seems to trust again .Trust and now having fun .Brock Holt and Sandy Leon are the Glue in my humble opinion .I hope Holt comes back very soon and look the hell out !!!!!

For one, you can't just look at team CERA without looking at the context- which catcher catches more of which pitchers, but since it was his stat of choice, here are the updated numbers:

6.17 Swihart

 

(Did people really expect Swihart's bat to make up that differential? I know, given a full season of sample sizes, the margin would not be that wide, but how narrow did it have to be to make choosing Swihart over Leon worth it?)

We know that Sandy Leon being around makes pitchers happy.

 

Anyway leongate makes for a better story so I'm sticking with it.

The bottom line is that the Sox are better off with two above average MLB defensive catchers. It makes them better defensively and it makes things easier for their pitching staff. Swihart, for various reasons and circumstances, did not make it to the same level defensively as either Vazquez or Leon. The Sox are starting to roll now, so there really is nothing to complain about as to how the Swihart saga ended. Whether he ultimately fails or succeeds, the move to trade him and bring up Leon is the right one.
