This makes the tax issue a lot clearer, I think:

By negotiating the deal before Opening Day, the Red Sox and Sale had the ability to structure the deal one of two ways: The two sides could have ripped up his $15-million option year for 2019 and began the new contract this season. That contract then would have expired after the 2023 season, Sale’s age 34 season. But the Red Sox and Sale agreed to keep this season’s $15 million option intact and structure the new contract from 2020-24.

...

The new contract doesn’t affect the Red Sox’s 2019 Competitive Balance Tax (payroll). Sale’s average annual value of $29 million will begin in 2020. So the Red Sox still have a chance to stay under the $237 million third CBT threshold, which they say is their goal.

So, through 2019, the Red Sox have a stud starting staff, Sale, Price, Eovaldi, Rodriguez, and Porcello.

After the 2019 season, Porcello leaves and the competition begins for the 5th spot in the rotation: Brian Johnson, Houck, Hernandez, and Shawaryn. There is a good chance that one of those guys will rise up and be a solid cost controlled starter.

That would take the starting staff through 2020 and 2021 when Rodriguez will be a free agent after 2021. This would be the perfect time for Jay Groome to enter the rotation--he will still be young, only 23 years old.

The Red Sox are loaded with starting pitching depth over the next few seasons and will have a lot of options. At some point soon (over the next 2-3 years) they will need to make decisions on Houck, Hernandez, and Shawaryn--are they going to be long term starters or transition to reliever, like Matt Barnes did a few years ago?

It is amazing how well Dombrowski has managed the Red Sox starting pitching depth.

1. Trout had two years left on his contract. That contract was VOIDED by both sides. New contract was signed and covers 2019 and beyond. He has new CB payroll average.

2. Sale has a 7 year contract that he signed with White Sox which ends in 2019. Red Sox assumed the contract when the trade was consummated. Sale will have a new contract that will go into effect after 2019 season. New contract has no impact on 2019 CB payroll.

I'm still not clear if the signing date has any impact. Likely not since it covers services and payments for future performance.

There’s a good chance that the detritutus in your minor league system develops a good const controller starter? Cmon now, the Sox haven’t developed a good starter since ERod and they had to get him while he was in AAA from the O’s. None of the guys listed above are likely to impact the team as a starter, outside of Groome who is a total wild card after missing so much development time. Expecting your minor leagues to fill the pitching hole is wishing, not being reality based.

Ok. So you don’t think any of the guys listed have a shot at being a 5th starter in a couple years? Noted.

We shouldn’t always expect to have 5 aces in the rotation but we have been spoiled lately....

Have you ever read your own posts about Yankee pitching prospects?

Honestly, replace the words Sharwyn, Houk and Hernandez with King, Loasigia and Garcia. And Abreu. And Cessa. And Tarpley.

And then end by saying they have too many pitching prospects. And it’s you. :)

A 5th starter isn’t really a “good cost controlled starter”. A 5th starter is usually a not very good starter. And then touting the pitching depth, cmon now

Well when we have Sale, price, erod, eovaldi penciled into the rotation the next few years we are really just looking at a 5th starter. That’s kind of the point....

D Hernandez may come through, but until it happens, I don't blame anyone for thinking the trend will continue.

We may suffer in 2020 with DHernandez/Johnson/Velazquez as out 5th starter, but if we reset in 2020, we may be able to spend on a decent starter for 2021.

9:01pm: Sale has passed his physical, Rosenthal tweets, so all that remains is for the contract to be announced. Sale will earn $30MM in each of the first three seasons of the deal, after which time he has the right to opt out of the remaining two seasons. Those campaigns are valued at $27.5MM, meaning Sale will be deciding on two years and $55MM versus a trip onto the open market.

Starting Rotation

2019 Sale, Price, Eovaldi, E Rod, Porcello

2020 Sale, Price, Eovaldi, E Rod

2021 Sale, Price, Eovaldi, E Rod

2022 Sale, Price, Eovaldi

Pretty strong line up for the playoffs.

Next extension target should be JD Martinez. Get a front loaded six year deal done with opt out after third year.

Only a defensive Yankee fan can turn this into something negative by talking about the lack of our pitching depth in the minor leagues. lol

My question to him would be can the Yankees match that starting rotation? I think that DD knows perfectly well what we have and don't have for pitching in the minors thus the great signings to keep that starting rotation one of the best in baseball for a number of years.

I could see this happening.

Did you read the post I was referring to or are you just defending the laundry?

The post where it was posited that one of Johnson, Hernandez, Houck, or Shawaryn could become a solid, cost-controlled starter? That may be a slightly rose-colored view, but I don't see it as rampant homerism by any means.

If Brian Johnson potentially being our #5 starter is the biggest problem we have to worry about next year, I'll be pretty content.
