FORT MYERS, Fla. -- When the Red Sox made a blockbuster trade with the White Sox for Chris Sale in December 2016, the only guarantee was that they'd have the powerful lefty for three seasons. The marriage between the ace pitcher and the defending World Series champions will extend far

Hopefully the Sox included safeguards against the shoulder issues he has had recently. I do not particularly trust the Sox medical staff to accurately identify the nature of the problems he had last year.

11:45am: The extension, if finalized, is expected to land in the range of $150MM over a five-year term, per ESPN’s Jeff Passan (Twitter link).

Sale did say money wasn't everything.

I'm happy for him, he deserves this payday.

Not so happy for my yankees because they will have to face him for a few years, but good signing for you guys.

He did say that. He also said its "the only thing". :P

That would mean $60M+/yr on 2 pitchers 30+ years of age .........

This is great news. The AV is around expected but the years are less than what I thought we might have to go to. Great move. 4 very good pitchers signed up through 2022. IF they stay fit we are in very good shape on that front.

I think the owners are getting what they wanted . The players are becoming leery of free agency and are much more open to signing extensions. We will have to wait and see if that applies to Mookie too .

Wow...VERY reasonable deal for us if this is true.

Plus minus on being reasonable. Sale sold off some years to gain a big payday. The Sox traded uncertainty about the shoulder for a shorter term. If fully healthy, he blow away Price’s 7 yr $217 mil contract, but that isn’t the case. So each side gave a little and I’m sure both are happy

This essentially eats Pablo’s money for 2020. Sale’s $12 mil plus Pablo’s $18 mil

Cots has us on the books for Pablo's $5M buyout for 2020.

Red Sox, Chris Sale Agree To Extension

By Steve Adams | March 22, 2019 at 1:57pm CDT

1:57pm: The guaranteed money will come in “slightly below” $150MM, per MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand (Twitter link) and the contract will contain some deferred money as well.

Great news! I'm so thankful we have...

Chris Freakin' Sale!

I would have been fine with $35M x 5!

He's better than Price. He got less years than Price.

I'd call this a "hometown discount."

Good deal by today's standards. Is it large enough to be "Cringeworthy" by some of our members?

Kimmi wanted 2 years, but at $29M a year, instead of $35+M, and not 6 or 7 years long, makes this a very fine deal, IMO.

That has no impact on the 2020 payroll for tax purposes though.

My cringing started at 6 years, so I’m doing ok. Thank you for your concern...

Slasher prediction: Kimmi will wish it was only for 3 years but will be OK with the 5/$145MM

if we factor in this year it's a 6 year contract / 25.5 per year.

Sale was due to make $15 million for 2019, so for luxury tax purposes this makes it 6 years $160 million, for an AAV of 26.7 million.
