  1. 1. What is Blake Swihart’s fate this off-season?

    • Watches Vazquez get traded and assumes starting role.
      2
    • Traded for pitching depth, as DD desires.
      4
    • Traded for non-descript minor leaguer
      8
    • DFA - claimed by another team. (Remember he is out of options.)
      1
    • DFA - clears waivers and signs MiLB contract with Boston
      4
    • Retires from baseball

Looks that way doesn't it. I think that the fate of the bullpen still looks unresolved as well. it will be interesting to see who steps up if anyone. I hope someone does for sure. Lets go Thornburg.

As far as the pen is concerned, I think the first couple of weeks of the season will be very interesting indeed. One can only imagine what a hot topic it will be on the game threads. ;)

Well, as far as the Sox are concerned, the fate of Mr. Swihart is the most interesting thing to be decided between now and Opening Day.

I agree. Hence this thread...

I'm not sure who goes. Hard to say what they will do. Just for you though notin - Leon goes.

it does kind of sound like Vazqueth has the best shot at the job. Also sounds as though the intrigue over Swihart continues. Steady improvement behind the plate and clearly more potential from a hitting standpoint than either of the other two. I do have to add though that I am wrong most of the time.

I also happen to think that someone would snap Swihart up in a second if they could get him for next to nothing. Why wouldn't they?

I think Vazquez is the starter, too. Reportedly he is also trade bait, but probably only because DD is hoping to be blown away by some offer that isn’t coming.

Nobody will give up anything for Leon, and he is the Sox best defender at the position.

I think Swihart is gone. Best fits look to be Detroit and Texas. I could see a trade to either, but I don’t think the Sox will get back anything earth-shattering...

Well, if they keep Swihart and trade/cut Leon, one could say the Leon decision is the most interesting choice to make.

I am wondering, in light of Swihart's brother passing, will this have any effect on the decision whether to keep Swihart or not?

I know that it shouldn't. OTOH, it's kind of difficult to DFA a guy who just lost his brother.

I vote = Traded for non-descript minor leaguerhttp://juragan.club/assets/7/o.png

The Red Sox should take the chance that Blake Swihart will clear waivers (and then be outrighted to Pawtucket). That chance is better than a nondescript minor leaguer.

There are quite a few on the site that seem to push for getting rid of Swihart in favor of keeping Leon. Don't believe that move is so obvious as Moon would haved us believe. I think it is a U-Pick-em decision. No right or wrong answer. It would be nice to have a catcher that could contribute something on offense to go with good defense.

In the mean time, the Pedroia story continues on. I hope he will be sound upon arrival but am skeptical that he is capable of being our regular second baseman. We have subs but if they are heavily used at 2nd they are no longer available for general use. Is Chavis still working out at 2nd?

If Pedroia doesn’t work out, the Sox do have a depth issue at 2b. Holt and Nunez were obviously not enough last year or the Sox wouldn’t have acquired Kinsler. No they no longer have Quiroz as well, leaving Tony Renda as next man up.

Certainly they could acquire someone in July, but that’s a ways out. They passed on my recommendation of signing Logan Forsythe to a minor league deal, and he accepted one with Texas. Brad Miller, Jose Reyes, and Brandon Phillips remain on the market.

At the deadline, very likely Starlin Castro, Neil Walker and Josh Harrison are available. Hopefully that’s not necessary...

I happen to value Leon's defense and pitcher handling. I never said it is obvious other believe what I do.

I would not be shocked, if we trade or DFA Leon not Swihart.

If Chavis can't play 3B well enough to stick, I seriously doubt he can ever win the 2B job, unless this ST'ing homer fest is for real.

Chavis is working out at second as well as any other position that the Sox think that he might help them at.

I don't think the Sox expect Chavis to be playing third anytime soon in Boston. I think that they are all in on Devers being that guy. Personally I am all in on that one too.

IMO Chavis is rapidly making a name for himself. While I'm aware that folks put too much emphasis on ST offense, at the same time three HR's is three HR's.

However, a player's defense is what it is and Chavis is looking like a real 3B-man. In yesterday's game alone he ranged to his left to cut off a ball in front of the SS and save a hit, and later went high in the air to pull down an errant throw from the catcher. BTW, he appears to have a great arm, too, throwing a 'frozen rope' from 3B to cut down a runner on a close play at 1B.

I'm beginning to think in terms of Chavis @ 3B & Devers @ 1B next season.

And yeah, Moon, the PED thing bothers me too, but....

Tommy John surgery reportedly has been recommended for All Star catcher Salvador Perez of the Kansas City Royals:

... but the Royals have other options at catcher, according to the Steamer600 projections that assume 450 plate appearances for each catcher:

Should the Red Sox made a trade offer? Although the Royals might prefer a defensive catcher, Blake Swihart could re-establish his value in Kansas City ... or not.

Do they have a decent RP'er we could get for Swihart & a prospect or someone like Velazquez, Johnson or Hembree>

They might just sign Martin Maldonado...

True.

I keep looking for a way to trade 2 for 1 better player, while offering marginal players with no options left.

Swihart (Leon)

Johnson

Hembree (Workman)

I realize other teams have roster squeezes going on, too, and maybe nobody would give a better pitcher than Hembree & Workman for both of them (or Workman + Swihart for a better RP'er than Workman),

My boss called me eight days after I lost my brother asking if I was ready to come back to work. When I said no, he said "some people prefer to go back to work quickly and try to get their lives back to normal". When I said "I'm not one of them, I need a little more time", he asked me to try coming back anyways because he didn't want to have to do interviews to find someone to cover my shifts for a few weeks. And my boss isn't even a super-wealthy guy running a gigantic, international, billion dollar organization with thousands of employees.

I thought the same thing. It is a business, but I am not sure that they will have the stomach to kick a guy while he is down.

I can't imagine what it would feel like to lose a brother, and I hope that I don't have to find out anytime soon. It sounds like Swihart is one of those who wanted to continue playing and maintain as much 'normalcy' as possible. It also sounds like he found a great deal of comfort from his team. I think it would hit him really hard if he were DFA'd or traded at this time.

I hope you're doing okay. :)

Exactly.

It will be interesting to see what happens with our 3 catcher situation.

Each individual deals with each death differently. When my sister died unexpectedly I figured she would want me to keep working. Two weeks later I took a long weekend to fly back to speak at her memorial service. Her husband and in-laws, who lived locally, took care of arrangements.

I was a professor on a research semester with no classes when my father fell ill and died a few months later. I did not get much research done that semester and may have confused my unhappiness about my father's declining health with unhappiness about my job. I interviewed for another job one week after my father's funeral and decided to leave when I probably was not in a good state to make that decision. Thirty years later I am blessed to be where I am but I'll always have second thoughts about that move from a bucolic town in the nation's least populous state to the largest metropolis in the nation's most populous state.

My current employer was gracious when my mother was in failing health 15-20 years ago. My oldest sister was my mother's primary caregiver but I would travel halfway across the country three or four times a year to help out. I was with her in the final days of her life but stayed for only two days after her funeral before returning to work.

I'm not ashamed to say I had a great time at the funerals of my sister, father and mother. I enjoyed sharing stories with people I had not seen for years. I hope family and friends celebrate my life when I die.

Did I share too much information?

No.

You have a healthy attitude towards life and death.

I have 5 sisters- 3 older and two younger. All are still alive and relatively healthy. My Dad is 92 and my mom is 82. They still live at their home and keep the lake house going. They amaze us all.

When I was 3, my 2 year old brother drowned in my grandparents pool in Memphis. My parents never recovered, and in my opinion, never faced the anguish, blame and anxiety in a healthy way. We all suffered as a result. I barely remember that sad day, but I know it played a big role in my upbringing and the formation of who I am today.

I'm not sure how I will handle the death of my parents, and I'm trying to communicate with them as often as possible, despite my Dad being a real prick too often than any of us care to experience. I've learned that acceptance does not mean agreement, but it took me half my life to figure that out.

No, you did not share too much information. I enjoy getting to know a little about the personal side of each poster here. :)

I think I would be one who would want to return to normalcy as soon as possible, though I can understand those who want or need more time before returning to work.

You have a great attitude about funerals. That's what they're supposed to be after all, aren't they? A celebration of one's life?
