I would say the common-sense rule is, if you know it can't possibly generate more than a couple of posts, it's not a thread.

I think it's a fine idea that any move the Sox makes gets its own post. If you aren't paying attention, someone like Esteban Quiroz gets traded but you'll never know because it's buried in a 100 page long offseason thread that no normal person has time to read.

I think it was more about the proliferation of the same threads (i.e. don't add another starting pitcher discussion thread when there already is one, don't add a post about how angry last night's game made you when there already is a game thread, don't start another discussion about trading Pedroia when there already is a thread on the front page specifically discussing it).

 

If someone wanted to make a MiLB transaction thread specifically for BOS moves, it could make sense.

Also when this transaction was announced on MLBTR, the reactions in their posts were largely along the lines of “so Bradley is getting traded?”

 

The purpose here is to quash that foolish idea that Gorkys Hernandez was signed to replace an outgoing Bradley...

At best, he’s a mid-season call up. He’s not on the 40 man roster and his minor league deal guarantees Pawtucket to start.

 

If the Sox deal Bradley - which I would call unlikely - that could clear up a bench spot for Swihart. Although I would expect the Sox to get a OF//DH type before the season, because I don’t think the plan is to make Steve Pearce the everyday DH with JDM moving to LF. At least I hope not. And I don’t think Swihart gets that role, either...

This 100 page overlapping threads thing is a big problem, esp if you've been away for awhile or are new to the board. But I think the reason for it is that only bigger boards can sustain multiple specific and current threads. But I guess the rule for posters is to start a thread if it seems called for, and if it quickly lapses, it may have been a poor idea, or that there wasn't enough interest from a board with a limited number of posters. Anyhow, it's all touch and go.
