Vazquez as the starter has always made sense. There is an upside on his offense - but it's not zero. With his receiving, that is a perfectly good starter. On some basic level I like Swihart's talent better - but: (and these things can be true at the same time)

1. The Sox did not see themselves in a position to "let it ride"

2. Swihart was constantly yo-yo'd

3. He did not produce in the chances he DID have.

Given all of this, Vasquez being our near-mid term starter is totally cool.

Price is on the 10 day IL, retroactive from May 3rd. Elbow inflammation.

The health of our starting rotation has been , and will continue to be , a concern . Only Porcello can be considered durable .

Do it right, push him ahead till May 17th, that should be enough rest, a full 2 weeks. To face the Astros.

Remember on the Swihart vs Leon debate, how some said we should trade or DFA Vaz?

Those people are nuts - if there was a decision it was Swihart vs Leon.

2014 a young vaz came up and played well. he was injured for 2015 so Blake was rushed in there. the swi vs vaz debate was during this time and it was who should be the starter going forward and/or who should be the trade chip to get us pitching.

Give Mike Shawaryn a spot start. Guess Ryan Weber was called up.

Times like this make me wonder why Chandler Shepherd was ever added to the 40 man roster...

We don't even have 40 players on the roster, so it matters not

The Yankees , for example , have four or five guys in the bullpen who are better than anyone in some teams pen . But it costs money .

The Yankees BP currently has a save % of 61.54%.

The Red Sox BP currently has a save % of 66.67%.

Well said sk.

Whilst Bogey has had some big hits recently he is in a mini slump, with 6 hits in his last 34 ABs, and the quality of many of his ABs hasn’t been good .

We do have 40, now, with the additions of Weber, Curletta, Josh Smith and the re-addition of Leon.

Who would be the first to go, if we added another player or when Wright comes off his suspension?

1. Shepherd

2. an out-of-options player due to the 25 man roster squeeze created by Chavis' excellent start? (Nunez, Pearce, Thornburg?)

3. Curletta

4. Weber

5. Josh A Smith

6. Josh Taylor

7. Brewer

8. Travis

9. Wright

If you count Thornburg, I count about 10 guys we could DFA, and I wouldn't complain at all.

It is high time this team shaped up and started playing better baseball . We are approaching 25 % of the season having been completed , and we are still treading water , two games under .500 . This despite having played a pretty soft schedule. No excuses .

I think winning 6 of the last 8 might show we have already "started" playing better baseball. We've also gone 11-6 in the last 17. If we win at an 11-6 pace the rest of the way, we'll be fine.

The last 8 games have been against Oakland , Chicago and Baltimore. Two last place teams and one fourth place team.

True, but we were losing to some bad teams earlier.

I'm not saying we don't have to keep getting better, but we've walloped these bad teams, for the most part.

I think we've turned the corner.

Having two of our top quality starters on the IL is yet another issue to overcome. Evoladi for 4 more weeks probably and Price for at least two weeks and maybe more. Every team faces these kind of injury problems but in our case we are trying to claw our way back into contention and it does make that harder to do.

I think we've turned ourselves into a .500 team, but I humbly submit we need Jackie Bradley Jr., Steve Pearce, Nathan Eovaldi, David Price, and JD Martinez's power stroke to return to form before we can be reasonably confident we are contenders. My mid-May prediction is looking to be more end of May now.

Josh Smith, now there's a gem. Career ERA of 6 with a 1.8 whip not to mention age 32. Great addition to the Rotation while Shawaryn sits in AAA

Great call to start this slug who gets lit up by a terrible O's team

There are so many beatable teams in the league , that the record almost certainly will improve. My concern is ; can we beat the Yankees ? We are trailing them despite all of their injuries. Can we match up when they get healthy? The two games we lost in New York were not a lot of fun .

By JDM's standards, he is also just getting by at 8 for 30 with only 2 doubles for extra bases. Not a slump, but a bump in the road for your reliable big bat. Pearce and Bradley aren't in slumps, they are in the dumps at 2 for 15 and 2 for 16 respectively over the last week with 11 Ks between them.

What is the upside and value of Pearce . Travis and Josh Smith? All could be gone by the trade deadline, DFA'ed not for any trade value. Nunez at least covers multiple positions, and Holt's ability to be on the field is always at question. Wright is as likely to suck as be of any use come July. Weber was an odd one last night but did get 4 innings eaten with no further damage, but would hate to see that slop needed in Yankee Stadium. Maybe he's the long mop up relief. Thornburg and Brewer probably have jobs through the season just because no one is behind them .

If the Sox are in serious contention come mid to late July, DD will need to be very proactive but has next to no ammo for his trade gun. Come 2020 ST, about 7 or 8 of the 11 total names listed will be " not present".

Other teams are missing 1 or 2 of their starters, too.

If these guys were to be out all year, I'd be much more worried.
