Signing anybody based on a 5-10 start stretch is usually not a good idea.

I have more confidence in Sale being strong all next year than Eovaldi.

Signing players based on monster postseason numbers gets you Pablo Sandoval. And every GM knows it...

I was for re-signing Eovaldi before the playoffs. I really like his stuff. Obviously I'm glad he's dominating for Sox in playoffs and potentially bringing a world series title home, but I hope this doesn't increase his value too much lol.

Both Eovaldi and Corbin have had their share of injuries, which will limit their appeal and years...

We should clearly sign all these other perfect starting pitchers that hit free agency in large numbers every year. How silly I was to fail to notice them all.

Eovaldi will probably be offered as someone in the 4th starter category. Probably 6 to 8 million for 3 years. He could help our team, but do we have the resources to sign him? You have excluded Kelly, Pom so perhaps some of that money could be applied to a much needed right handed starter. Lot to think about. Porcello may go in 2020 so a bridge there might be a help.

Lol Eovaldi for 3/18. Maybe in 2004.

There might still be a couple that need to learn the lesson.

Eovaldi is a team player. He is willing to come in and shut down the Dodgers anytime called upon. I love to see him again next year, but getting him will not be easy. He has got Verlander stuff.

Listening on the radio last night's game, Buster Olney said Eovaldi is going to get good Money. He said, 80-100 Million Dollars. It's just about years now. He guessed 4 year deal. Big Bucks now, Post season has risen his stock, Olney said big time. Edited by OH FOY!

Eo has always been a guy with tantalizing stuff but inconsistent production. That cutter has kept lefties honest and it’s allowed his velocity and movement of his FB-slider combo to be that much more deadly. The Rays did more for him than he’ll ever know. They rehabbed him and taught him a cutter.

Good for him. I hope he winds up in Boston. He is the kind of team player that everyone wants. He has been through quite a bit and when bums are being paid huge amounts of money, it will be nice to see someone who is earning it getting it. For the record, personally I could care less about this "small sample size theory" and his "injury history". He has a rebuilt arm and he is getting better and better. My guess is that Boston will make a big play for him. I totally endorse this comment understanding now that I might get to hear:

1. injury history

2. small sample size

3. JH will not be willing to spend the $ due to restricted budget and penalty costs

4. signing him will make it impossible to sign our other favorites

5. since the cliff is threatening our borders, it would be a waste

6. we should be building from within and he just didn't come from within

What did I leave out? Will the braintrust please set me straight. I have clearly become enamored with this flash in the pan.

How could I possibly want just another guy who throws 100 mph virtually unhittable strikes. Plus the fact that his confidence grows every time he goes to the mound. Take my comments here for what they are worth though because I am one of those guys who has always felt that anyone saying that David Price just couldn't pitch in October based on his record was nuts .

I think every Sox fan would love to have Eovaldi back next year as a big RH'd threat in our rotation. He would also ease the probable loss of Porcello after next year.

The reasons you gave to counter the idea are all valid, and I guess it will come down to DD and Henry.

Of course those reasons are valid to those who endorse them all. I am an outlier - I think that if wants him, he'll go after him and every one of those reasons will seem very secondary.

Little sidenote, Olney talked to Doctor who performed 2nd TJ, on Eovaldi, and the Doctor did a different procedure, then what is usually done. And he's monitored him since, and says his arm is even better now. He should have no problem going forward, but that is something I expect, for his client. But he might be right too. That's the gamble.

I agreed that all the reasons to not sign him were valid. That's not the same as endorsing them.

To me, it will all come down to what budget DD has to work with this winter.

My personal view is that our pen is a greater need than our rotation, and if it comes down to an either or, which it might not come to, I'd choose the pen.

Rotation:

Losing Eovaldi (big loss) & Pom (addition by subtraction)

Replacing with more starts from ERod, Wright, Johnson and/or Velazquez (Shawaryn on the farm)

Pen:

Losing Kimbrel (huge) & Kelly (significant)

Replacing with more appearances by Brasier, Workman, Poyner, Thornburg & Smith (Feltman & Lakins on the farm)

To me, it's not about Eovaldi vs Kimbrel; it's Thornburg/Smith vs Wright/Johnson.

I'd love to keep Kimbrel & Eovaldi, but not if it means we lose Betts, Bogey or a combination of other key players in 2020 or 2021.

If I knew our budget was going to be super high, I'd be suggesting all kinds of possible moves. Until I see it, I'm going on the assumption that we probably won't go $40M over the limit and eventually, Henry will want to reset the tax rates.

I would think any guy who throws close to 100 mph must be puttinng tremendous strain on his arm and it seems like a large number of them do these days. On our staff, we have a bunch including Kelly, Barnes, Eovaldi, Brasier, Hembree and even Sale. If we stay away from pitchers who have previously had TJ surgery, we might be limiting ourselves too much.

A lot will depend on Henry's willingness to keep his wallet open and maybe even open it further.

It's hard to think of a deep and balanced team like this one as having multiple needs this winter, but with Eovaldi, Pearce, Kimbrel, Kelly and Kinsler all looking at free agency, it looks like we have 3 areas of need:

1) The pen

2) 2B

3) SP'er

We may not be able to spend large in each area. It may come down to either/or.

I've been picturing Henry watching Eovaldi and thinking 'Hmmm, I really like this fellow.'

Hard to to like what we all saw, and we could really use a power righty in the rotation next year.

My guess is, Henry will look to reset the luxury tax after 2019 or 2020, so I'm thinking we'll see continued high spending this winter to keep us as a top contender.

Who knows? Winning two in a row might help some of our stars accept hometown discount deals.

Doubtful all vacancies are filled by spending. We do have a President/GM who likes to make trades.

Any of the following (and possibly a few others) might be trade bait to fill those needs:

Bobby Dalbec

Sam Travis

Blake Swihart

Brian Johnson

Michael Chavis

Josh Ockimey

Chandler Shepherd

Mike Sharwyn

Heath Hembree

Brandon Workman

Not sure what that gets them, but I do expect a deal or two. I do think a reliever or two and a stopgap 2b can be acquired from players in that assortment...

I can see us holding off picking anyone up for 2B until mid season. By then, we'll know more about...

Pedey's status

Holt's stamina and fitness

Nunez's knee

Marco Hernandez, Lin and Quiroz viability as depth at 2B

We may also go with Wright, Johnson and Velazquez as our 5th starter options and look for a starter like Eovaldi next July.

I think the pen is where we spend and/or trade to upgrade the most.

I think DD brings back Kimbrel.

For the rumored money and years, I would prefer he brought back Kelly and looked elsewhere for a closer...

I'm not so sure about Kimbrel. I know DD has had major issues with the pen in the past, but I still think using Kimbrel's money to get 2-3 solid RP'ers is a better use of budget space.

While true, DD does like big name splash players and Kimbrel was his first major acquisition in Boston...

His big name splashers have been pretty good picks for the most part.
