Texas is targeting yet another Sox player according to MLBTR. Eovaldi comes with 2 TJS so if he needs it again they might need to harvest a tendon from a dead corpse to attach it to his.

I'm leaning toward to giving him a 2 year deal with a option.

With limited resources, we may let Pom & Eovaldi walk and see how it goes. If what we have comes up short, we may look to deal for someone, like we did for Eovaldi and the Yanks did with Happ & Lynn midseason.

1. Sale

2. Price

3. Porcello

4. ERod

5. Wright

6. Johnson

7. Velazquez

8. Cuevas

9. Shawaryn

10. Haley

11. Shepherd/Houck/D Hernandez

Eovaldi will probably be offered as someone in the 4th starter category. Probably 6 to 8 million for 3 years. He could help our team, but do we have the resources to sign him? You have excluded Kelly, Pom so perhaps some of that money could be applied to a much needed right handed starter. Lot to think about. Porcello may go in 2020 so a bridge there might be a help.

Yes, I mentioned no Pom. Kelly is in the pen, so that doesn't affect the rotation.

The Pom & Kelly money will go towards arb raises or replacing or keeping Kimbrel.

We will also need at least another pen arm beyond a closer.

We could maybe try to dump Nunez and Moreland's salary and hope Chavis, Dalbec, Travis or Ockimey can fill at 1B/3B as well as a Pedey return at 2B or a Holt, Hernandez, Quiroz, Lin combo at 2B will be enough. that freed up money could help us get better RP'ers and maybe another 5th starter type.

I'd rather wait on a 5th starter until mid season. DD seems to do well with these types of trades (Eovaldi, Pearce, Kinsler...).

I rather spend money on bullpen as Erod and Price and Sale and Porcello and let Wright and Johnson battle it out and sign a low risk guy. Need to shore up bullpen make sure we have a reliable closer and look at 2nd base if we’re worried about Pedroia and can use a platoon offense guy to go with Moreland. Haven’t had good first baseman sense Gonzalas in 2011 and Youkilis. Keep outfield in tact.

I would absolutely sign him for a reasonable, short term deal.

Me too, but he will get more than we can afford. We have bigger need areas.

If we can't re-sign Kimbrel, what are thoughts on turning Eovaldi into a closer? He has the heater and the put away slider.

Who else besides us is going to need a closer for next season?

Posted
What can be a bigger need than starting pitching?

A closer.

2 set-up men.

I like our starters going into next year, just like I liked this year's. I'm usually one to always want to add a 1-2 type starter.I'm not so hot on signing 4-5 types.

Start the year with what we have, and if we need a starter, then look for thenext Eovaldi/Happ type. They seem to be cheaper during the year than before, lately.

The good thing is, it won't be LAD or NYY.

Maybe the Guardians, Cubs or Braves?

Payroll free up by Hanley, Pomeranz, Kelly and Kimbrel close to $50M. We need a RHP starter and Eovaldi pitches well against the Yankees counts.

I like to retain Kimbrel if he pitches well in the playoff. My cut off was around 60M over 4. If he pitches great during the run, I would go to 70M. We don't win without a closer and not everybody can handle that duty.

It's not that simple.

1) You assume we will stay $39.5M over the luxury tax, which I suppose we might do for one more year.

2) Arb raises, option raises and Pablo's contract still exist.

3) We will have several needs (see below).

What is the greater need area?

A) Closer: Brasier/Barnes/Hembree

B) #1 Set-up man: Barnes, Hembree, Workman

C) #2 Set-up man: Hembree, Workman, Poyner

D) #5 starter: Wright, Johnson, Velazquez, Shawaryn, Shepherd, Houck, D Hernandez

E) 2B: (Pedey) Nunez, Holt, Hernandez, Lin

F) 1B v LHPs: Holt or Ockimey

I actually like Wright & Johnson over any other choices here, except maybe 2B with several chances at someone stepping up.

He's not taking $60M/4. He won't even take $60M/3, $75M/4 or $85M/5.

I would assume that a high percentage of starting pitchers who throw hard will have durability issues. Don't know if there is a source within MLBB that can quantify durability, but there probably is. Thats why I cringe at the idea of giving any starter a long term contract and particularly if that pitcher has already got a lot of innings behind them. It might work out, but it is a risky endeavor. The Price contract in particular bothered me. He has had his issues, but at least he is still out there holding down a #2 starter role.

But a high percentage have not had TJS twice before turning 27....

he's only had 30 starts once in his career. this is a big NO for me to give anything over 1 year contract. someone will give him 2+.

would rather take a flier on Clay for minimum $$$.

Cubs, Guardians, Blue Jays, Cardinals, Royals, Brewers, Twins, and Mets off the top of my head. Not all will be willing to pay for Kimbrel, but certainly some can afford him.

And there is always a team or two willing to move their closer to a set up role and upgrade the position...

I'm a no on both.

I'd love to have Eovaldi back but not at the cost he will get.

DD has done well picking up players mid season. I'd go with what we have and make changes, if needed.

In season DD pick-ups:

2018

Eovaldi

Pearce

Kinsler

Phillips

2017

Nunez

Fister

Boyer

Reed

R Davis

2016

Pomeranz

Ziegler

F Abad

Clay put up such good numbers this year that some team will likely be willing to give him a deal. I'm guessing it would be a one-year deal with a small base plus incremental amounts for numbers of innings pitched.

I would be willing to give Eovaldi a 2 year contract. Someone will offer him more than that.

I am fully on board with signing Clay to a minor league deal.

The idea of Eovaldi closing is interesting. He doesn't walk much and throw heat. But we need a RHP starter.

I would sign him to 2 year at 7-10M + incentives.
