Calling him a cancer helps my argument that the negative aspects are being overblown. While he is no Mookie Betts or Mike Trout, he is one of the best in the game . I doubt that any contact is going to strangle the Yankees .

They will look to reset at some point during his contract. His contract will make it very difficult.

Again, cancer spreads, and his is malignant.

The puns are hilarious and inaccurate. He’s a dirty player. He’s never been known to be a bad teammate.

CC had an angioplasty and a stent placed today. That’s a far bigger life concern than baseball. They say he’ll be ready, but life has to come first here

You're already in apologist mode.

He's dirty.

He doesn't hustle.

He brags about not hustling.

That's my definition of a cancer.

I hope you guys get him not Harper.

You’re better than that. He’s a great player. He’ll be a great addition.

I'm serious. I wouldn't take him for $10M a year.

(And, I've been accused of not understanding the non data part of the game.)

If Machado signed for $10 million a year, I would absolutely take him. Machado is a huge douche, but he is a superstar talent. He'll make any team he goes to better, and I don't want him on Yankees, or anywhere near AL East, unless Its Boston (which it wont be).

Machado is a great player. He also carries some baggage with him. I get the impression that he thinks he's bigger than the team. Time will tell whether his attitude will create any clubhouse issues or not. It's also very possible that Machado will mature and outgrow these things.

I do not want him on the Red Sox, I know that.

I suppose it's possible that Manny may outgrow his antics. But it's not a good sign, to put it mildly, that he had such a flurry of incidents after being traded to the Dodgers this year, being in the national limelight and, in theory, showcasing himself for the free agent market. It makes you wonder if he's got some serious and fundamental psychological/emotional issues that might actually get worse.

Agreed. I guess the question is whether his talent is enough to put up with the antics. Probably at first it will be, but if Machado doesn't outgrow this behavior, I think it will become a problem sooner in the contract rather than later.

It's going to be interesting indeed if the Yankees sign him.

Especially after Hal Steinbrenner has gone on record that the 'Johnny Hustle' comments are 'troubling' and 'that ain't going to sell where we play baseball'.

The Yanks will get Machado. He wants to go to NY. We just need to be in the ballpark financially. My guess is the other clubs (CWS and PHI) are willing to go the 10 year route. My bet is the Yanks go 7 yr $198 mil ($28 mil AAV) with $105 mil coming over the first three seasons and an opt out after the third. This gives him the highest AAV while allowing him to return to the market at 29 yrs old. It also drops the AAV due to the dummy back end of the contract thereby helping the Yanks on the payroll side of things.

We will then go out and re-sign KRob. Thankfully, while the market for fringe middle relievers has risen, the market for setup men capable of closing has not (see Familia). My guess is we can get KRob by offering him a lower AAV than what he was earning ($14 mil) by giving him a vesting option for a third season.

I know a lot of rumors have the Yanks in on Britton, but I dont believe them. He’s younger and this is his first foray into FA. He’s gonna go for the biggest deal and it won’t be as a third options setup man in the Bronx

IMO, the Yankees will sign him. As Jacko said, Machado wants to play for the Yankees so it would take a lot for other teams to draw him away.

If Machado does become a Yankee, it will be interesting to see how Hal responds to questions about his previous comments.

It’s Machado who needs to respond. Hal only needs to say he spoke with him man to man and feels the issue is resolved. Machado has to actually put those concerns to bed with his performance and attitude

I'd rather the Yanks get Machado than Harper.

ostly, I'm thinking how much sweeter it is going to be to beat the Yankees' asses again and again!

This is why I think the Yankees must be the worst run organization in sports. They’ve had payrolls at or near the highest in the league for the past 3 decades despite that every player in MLB is clearly willing to take less money to play for them...

You’re delusional. It was your team that set the record for payroll by a World Series winner. It was your team that outspent the cap by over $40 mil and it’s your team that is incurring the worst penalties available that actually impact your squad from a talent acquisition perspective. And yet you have to come troll here with the above garbage to what, feel better about yourself? The Yanks have missed the playoffs 4 times in the past 24 seasons. In that run, we’ve won 5 titles and been to 7 World Series. 3 of those times have come in the past 6 years, but in none of the past 25 have we finished below .500. This franchise is run very well and has adapted from one where George wanted to win at all costs to rebuilding on the fly and switching to a better model. Enjoy your Christmas. Enjoy your win. You do know your cliff is coming and I will remember this day

I love the threat at the end.

Whether or not the Sox spend (which I didn’t deny), the Yankees do and have at or near the top for roughly 30 years. Really my comment was more about how Yankee fans always seem to think every MLB free agent is dying to come play for the Yankees and willing to do so for less money than they want from everyone else. Not one of you ever seems to think that the reason free agents openly embrace the Yankees in the media is that the club has a reputation for paying extremely well, something that aligns with most free agent’s goals. Maybe one or two really want to be Yankees, but most just say it publicly to entice the Yankees to stay in the bidding. These guys do hire agents for a reason and that reason is actually NOT to make less money playing in New York, shocking as that sounds.

This is also the reason the Yankees (along with fellow big spenders the Red Sox and Dodgers) are on most no-trade clauses. When a player comes to New York or Boston, he wants to be paid accordingly and not be paid in Padres dollars or Marlins dollars. The NTC allows them to ask for the differential to waive it. Didn’t you ever wonder why so many players who were willing to take less to play for the Yankees would sign elsewhere and then also add the Yankees to their NTC lists?

I know this conflicts with your prediction that Machado is going to ignore larger offers from two teams who have pledged to outbid the Yankees...

The media has been pumping two stories with Machado. 1. The Yanks don’t have the highest offer. 2. Machado wants to be a Yankee. I’m just considering the options that maybe the Yanks offer isn’t the highest total value but gives Machado the highest AAV and another crack at free agency in his prime.

But my point - is Machado saying he wants to be a Yankee because he wants to be a Yankee? Or because he wants the Yankees to increase their offer, knowing they’re normally very heavy spenders?

That he hasn’t signed with the Yankees yet does support my point that when he says he wants to be a Yankee, what he really means is he wants to be paid like one....

Let’s not forget that the Red Sox had very high payrolls under Benny Boy and managed to finish last 3 out of 4 seasons. That was atrocious. I hate the Yankees, but I have great respect for Cashman. I am thrilled to have DD as our GM. He knows how to build a winning roster, but Cashman runs circles around Dave’s predecessor.

I have read and heard reports that he wants to be a Yankee. I am not sure that Cashman is drooling over him, and that concerns me because Cashman will be negotiating from strength and might get him for a comparative bargain. I am hoping that Harper signs first and sets a very high baseline for Machado.

Exactly.

Those are negotiating plots on both sides. The Yankees are among a few teams capable and willing to pay ungodly amounts to players. So while the White Sox and Phillies give a max offer that might actually be a max offer, Machado says “I want to be a Yankee” often enough to get the Yankees to increase their offer. Cashman then stalls because he doesn’t want to have to.

If Machado was so publicly overt about a desire to play in NY and take less money to do so, why would Philadelphia and Chicago bother bidding on him at all? What do you think his agent is saying in those meetings?

Ok one last time.

Jackpot said again “Machado wants to be a Yankee and will take less money to become one.” I made a comment that it really is amazing how many players Yankee fans seem to think will take discounts to wear pinstripes yet they still seem to pay a lot.

This isn’t about Red Sox spending. This comment also wasn’t about Yankee spending or Cashman or Cherington. It was a comment about Yankee fans and their perception of all the discounts they’ll be getting from free agents...

The players will not give anyone a ridiculous discount, and Cashman’s success has not been in getting undervalued FA’s but in obtaining players in trades for surprisingly low return and while getting the other teams to eat substantial salary.

Cashman has excelled in trading away prospects of value who don’t reach their potential and keeping ones that do. His FA signings won us a title in 2009, but other than that, the FA route has been hit or miss at best
