Last night was a pretty wild game proving once again that baseball is unpredictable. I was so sure Bogaerts put the game in the bag with the 1st inning dinger, then later was just as sure the Orioles were in the driver's seat.

Porcello and Eovaldi were horrible in back to back starts after both coming off fantastic back to back starts. Scary.

And what the heck is going on with that CF near the bottom of the order? Down there is the well of despair, but in this case it's opposing pitchers who are now despairing. JBJ is hitting the ball hard and going to the opposite field when appropriate. My goodness gracious.

Sox now have the biggest MLB margin between runs scored and runs given up, are well in front of the Yankees in total runs scored, appear to be able to hit the long ball down and then, and have a team OPS of .804. Unfortunately, sometimes they need all of that to pull one out.

What story is that?

I don’t know much about OB on TV, but I loved him on the radio with Castiglione, and I really miss him. The guys who call games with Joe now are boring as hell. OB and Joe together were a fun team. I guess TV and radio announcement take completely different skill sets. OBs attention to detail is great for radio but I can see how it might not translate to TV. More space to fill up with chatter when you don’t have to narrate every tiny bit of every at bat could definitely hamstring a guy like OB.

The Nolan Ryan "story" he told at about the 4th inning.

This is nothing compared to how bad it was a few years ago.

So the booth incident went as follows:

NESN production used that camera in the booth that is remote controlled. It sits to the left of OB and of course OB is left of Lyons or whomever else is there. The spot started calmly enough. But OB in that sometimes snarky manner of his looks over at Lyons scorecard and says with the camera right there, "look at that scorecard. What a mess. You can't possibly make any sense of that". Lyons just trying to defend himself says "Easy for you to say, you have the production crew score the game for you and just carry up these neat updated scorecards to you every few innings".

Well that was it. OB suddenly got caught with his pants around his ankles with his credibility as baseball play by play guy also around his ankles. He retorts "but but but, I have to do play by play". That was a pretty weak retort given what he said to Lyons and the snarky invective in OB's voice when he said it.

Lyons hears that suddenly wimpy defensive reply and goes right back after OB's throat. "That is your excuse for not keeping your own scorecard....that its just too hard for the play by play guy. Thats news to me."

Now OB losses it completely and really is just stuttering he is so mad and the production crew is I guess aghast because they don't cut back to anything, a commercial, anything. At this point they are both red and shouting at each other and I swear to God it looked like Lyons was one second from putting one of those big paws of his right through OB's face. Remember this is before Lyons had his ......."treatment" and his temper is legendary.

They contain it pretty well. But they are not friends and they make this work as best they can when they are thrown together in the booth. I don't think it would work at all with the Steve Lyons we knew for all of his playing career and most of the time since. If folks think booth crews or all celebrity teams are friendly by the way, that would be beyond naive.

OB does have a snarky superior attitude that does not stand him well, particularly around some athletes...not nearly as easy to deal with as Don was.

Think I vaguely remember this? I don’t remember it being a huge fight, of course I could’ve stepped out of the room. Sounds like a comment O’brien could make to Remy or Eck to simply avoid dead-air and have a laugh.

My top 3 rank is Eck, Castglione and Remy.

What a crazy game last night. We’re into the dog days now you can tell.

That was my thought too. O'B busted Lyons' chops a bit and Lyons went all psycho on him.

What website do people use when looking up batters and then seeing how they have done in a certain amount of time in the past?

For example, when people say so and so ops has been 1000 since June 1st, what site do you use?

You can do this on both Fangraphs and Baseball Reference. With either site, go to the player's page, then click on Game Log.

On Fangraphs, there are calendars that allow you to choose specific beginning and ending dates.

In Baseball Reference, tap on the beginning and ending rows, and the site will compute the data between those two rows.

My thought as well. I don't remember the incident at all, but I know that OB and Remy bust each other's chops about things like this all the time.

I don't have a problem with OB in the booth, though I like Orsillo a lot better.

Kind of ironic that Pom gets credited with the win. LOL

What a crazy game.

But, a Red Sox win coupled with a Yankees loss is always a good thing.

You can get away with that snarky superior stuff with some people and some you can't. Personally, I prefer people that don't even try. But, yes, you cannot account entirely for what will come back in your direction.

I will say this much. Lyons initial reaction to OB in the booth incident was simply naive but it was not snarky. OB's initial comment to Lyons which started the whole thing was snarky as heck. Lyons was simply naive to think that OB would not be sensitive to his cred as a play by play guy if Lyons told the viewing audience that for all his snarkiness about how Lyons keeps a scorecard, OB did not at that time (probably still doesn't) keep his own scorecard.

I should also point out that OB hiding behind his duties as the play by play guy keeping him from keeping his own scorecard is weak, smarmy and he knew he had been caught with his pants down. That is why it was OB that started the angry shouting and sputtering WITH THE WRONG GUY I might add unless you have a death wish.

As for why NESN kept its remote camera going for all of that......typical NESN production crew screw up. They finally cut away way too late and it had not ended before they cut away. They just cut out to a commercial but again waaaaaaaay to late. When they came back, the two of them were I would say, cordial but distant for the rest of that broadcast.

OB recently busted Eck's chops about the replay rule. Eck doesn't like the replays to see if a guy comes off the base on a slide when he beat the tag. I thought OB cross examined him too much. Eck has a short attention span and he was getting a little defensive. It wasn't good broadcasting, and the game was being ignored.

Gotta remember too, and perhaps this isn’t as well known as it should be, but a lot topics are producer driven. Producer says brings this or that up, extrapolate more on that, etc. It’s not as improv as it seems. Chances are if you hear anyone put their voice to the mic broadcasting it to the entirety of New England and beyond it’s because the producer told them to.

Reminds me of the time I shanked a guy for talking s*** about how I do a score card.

Excellent start for Price. BP was solid today. Braiser continues to impress. JBJ may be on one of his streaks. Let's sweep tonight.

He may be starting a torrid streak as he has had in the past, but despite some short stretches of struggles, he's been on a steady rise for 3 months straight. He's been doing what we've all wanted him to do for a pretty long time, now.

OPS every 15 days:

.510 May 12th

.548 May 27th

.572 June 12th

.612 June 27th

.641 July 12th

.653 July 27th

.691 Aug 11th (after game 1)

Thanks. Just thinking how Steve Pearce has performed after his amazing first week or so in Boston. Going to try to look that up.

.930 the last 28 days.

That's pretty close to his time period after week 1 with the Sox.
