Hanley was released for a number of reasons. Some being more important than others. I don't think the owners of this franchise owe any fan any explanation for what they did in this case. When the local store stops selling products that I like, I pretty much have to go to another store to get what I need. They don't ask for my input. Cora and DD gave an explanation because that seems to be what everybody has to do these days.

I'll ask you the same question I asked notin.

Let's assume the option was the real reason they released him at this point.

Should they have told the truth?

(notin says they didn't have to give any reason at all.)

Obviously, they can't say that they released him solely because of the option.

But let's not fling all that BS around either.

I don't like that they said Cora is the one who approached Dombrowski about getting rid of Hanley, whether there's any truth to that or not. IMO, that was completely unnecessary.

Cora seemed to want the heat. He told DD that he would take care of the clubhouse. DD did not want the heat, I guess. What is the problem with Cora taking accountability if it was his idea?

So you fully agree they had to BS. You just think they did a bad job presenting their BS. :)

can someone remind me how this 25 year old got this "ab strain"? was it swinging a bat in BP?

this is another one that falls under my years long frustration with Red Sox medical and training staff.

our players are made out of paper.

Just in: Sox training staff are now in charge of player genetics!

Now there's an all-inclusive blame job - medical staff, trainers and players all in one shot! LOL

Scouts should have been all over this! BAD job!

Well, looks like Mookie may be progressing to a game Friday in Pawtucket to see if he can hit.

You're an FNG, so a word to the wise. Just because the thread title has Mookie's name in it does not mean it's about some rightfielder named Betts. You watch: if Mookie returns on Saturday, this thread will continue.

Not at all. They didn't have to BS.

??? They did if the real reason was the option.

I didn't see any of the coverage though. Was Dombrowski directly asked if the vesting option was a factor? Or did he volunteer this information?

Ok - i've thought about this a lot. I think the world of Mookie like all of us do. The but here is that he isn't really a particularly big guy for what he gets out of his game. I think that he like Pedroia stretches his body to an extreme overtime he plays the game. It is great for sure but it might not spell longevity. he can't help us much unless he is able to play. Not sure I'd look ultra long term.

Yeah, I must say I don't envy GM's sometimes.

If you let a player like Mookie go and he kicks ass somewhere else for the next 5 years it makes you look bad. If you sign him to the big extension and he gets hurt or breaks down it makes you look bad.

Yes very near the end of the presser and his answer was no, not at all.

Lying prick! I just about spit my water all over my keyboard when he said it.

Not so fast.

@PeteAbe

Spoke to Betts. He said the plan was to hit on the field again tomorrow and go from there. This homestand is not looking very likely.

When you watched the feed of him hitting off the tee and how he grimaced after each swing you have to believe he is still hurting. I played a lot of football and once tore a rib cartilege and it was a very painful injury and took a long time to heal. I wonder if Mookie has a different injury than the one we have been advised about.

There's a wide range when it comes to "strains".

Depends on how severe it was, and how fast it can heal,I guess.

I'm nor sure I buy that Mookie is going to beat himself up like Pedrioia has.

Aside from a possible collision with a wall or awkward dive, I don't see him throwing himself around like Pedrioa.

If I see him starting to dive into first base, i might change my mind.

I don't think even our suspect medical staff would let him take swings with a torn rib cartilage.

Thanks Spud. I don't mean to be beating a dead horse about this. But I believe that because of the vesting option the Sox basically had to lie. Their only other option was to respond to every question with a Bill Belichick 'coach's decision' non-answer.

They are going to have to decide what to do with JD Martinez at the end of '19 too.

Anyone think he wont opt out, after the way he's been crushing the ball?

Let's hope the FA market is still depressed then.

I don't want to be an alarmist here but Mookie still looks to be in some pain and for two nights running we have see JDM taken out of the games early with signs of back spasms. Our core group is those two,Beni, Moreland and Bogey. The rest of our order scares no one. Lets hope that both Mookie and JDM can play regularly soon and together in the lineup.

True, but I hope they don't let Mookie play prematurely.

Beni, Xander and Moreland should be able to pick up the slack for a short time.

Aside from the Seattle series, the next two weeks are again sub-par teams.

Yup. This is key.

Maybe this big time rotation can throw 4 or 5 shutouts in the next week to let the winning continue while Mookie gets well and JDM rests his back. JDM should be only DH'ing right now. Holt can cover the open OF spot with Beni and JBJr.

Did Nunez have surgery also on his knee ? The Sox are getting a lot of mileage out of EN .
