There were no shifts in 1968.

None at all?

OTOH, nobody could hit in the year of the pitcher anyway, so it may not have mattered if there were none.

Not satisfied, Scully dug some more and found an even earlier example. Long before either Williams faced a defensive shift, a manager named Ferguson had moved his second baseman to the shortstop side of the bag against a right-handed hitter.

"So if you're talking about shifts," Scully said, "it might go to 1877."

That's why they're called the O's.

@based_ball

everyone thinks the Rays are blazing some new trail but the Orioles have been using one-inning starting pitchers for years

Radio announcers were saying that Nunez needs a break.

On the flipside, Brock Holt looks great this year. I'm happy for Brock to play 2B until Pedroia comes back.

The use of shifts has become quite a bit more prevalent, one might say.

Though they work, I am not a fan of defensive shifts. At least not to the extreme that they are used these days.

Nunez and Holt are not meant to play everyday. They become exposed and worn down. I am looking forward to the return of Pedroia.

Wasn't the shift created to combat Teddy Ballgame?

Ted constantly faced shifts. They really bugged him but he continued to hit into, through, and over them obviously on a regular basis.

There were no overshifts that I can remember where players were playing out of position. If it was done, it was extremely rare. The shifting occurred mainly in the OF.

There were none after they lowered the mound in 1969, 70 or 71 either.

Nunez just lets balls eat him up. He's a poor infielder. His glove is much better as a backup OF.

MVP is spot on ...Nuney can't be counted on in the infield and is sufficiently good enough in OF .

Well, MVP referenced a picture of one with Willie McCove in 1969; it didn't involve having somebody playing short righ field though.

You should know one should never talk in absolutes; your profession has field days making people who do look, well, silly.
