I can't tell if its been raining this hard the whole game or off and on. That looks like a lotta' water coming down.

I'm telling you this ump has consistently taken strikes away from Sox pitchers and given them to Orioles pitchers. It's pretty gross.

Machado's the reason Nunez is playing and Pedey isn't. Hard to forgive him for that.

But Pedey did. Immediately, in fact.

Batted balls travel further in the dry air. Think of Denver. Ask any Physics 101 student. Dry air, less density, less resistance.

"So you might think that a ball would go farther on a dry day than on a humid day. But for every water molecule that we add to the air, we displace a heavier nitrogen or oxygen molecule. Since the addition of humidity actually makes the air less dense, a ball will go farther on a humid day than it will on a dry day."

I know in my experience my nuts drag lower in humid temps anD kinda suck up inside my self in frigid temps ...please just shut the f*** up . Edited by Natick to NC

Nice win...really nice outing from Rick.

Hope we do get the game in tomorrow. Should win against the O's

The one to Betts was pure ******** and almost cost us the inning if Beni didn't bale the ump and the team out. Bring on automated balls and strikes.

You are correct -- mea culpa. Just read up on it.

Humidity is a measure of the percentage of water vapor in the air. An increase in humidity has a surprising effect on air density: As humidity increases, air density decreases. In damp air, the large, heavy oxygen and nitrogen molecules are replaced by lighter water molecules, resulting in less density -- in essence, lighter air. Physicist Paul Doherty explains it this way: "We think of humidity as something that's added to the air on a hot, muggy day. So you might think that a ball would go farther on a dry day than on a humid day. But for every water molecule that we add to the air, we displace a heavier nitrogen or oxygen molecule. Since the addition of humidity actually makes the air less dense, a ball will go farther on a humid day than it will on a dry day." The changes in air density related to humidity are not large: Compared to dry air at the same temperature and pressure, there's only about a 1 percent reduction in density for a humidity of 80 percent.

Back in the days of one year contracts that resume would assure one of a raise.

I remember years ago when YAZ was paid $150,000.00 for one year. That made him the highest paid player in the league. What with inflation that would equal $30,000,000.00 today. Only kidding.

I don't know about humidity, but I know cold air is very resistant to movement. I get way better gas mileage in the summer than in the winter. I imagine that cold air makes homers very difficult. One ball that Pujols hit against Yankees early this season was estimated to travel 475 feet (speed and arc of hit off the bat) and was caught by a stumbling Yanks left fielder who had a hell of a time tracking it, and collapsed when he did. It was said the Yanks won the game thanks to a sheet of cold air which drove the homer to the ground.

Balls don't travel further in Denver because the air is dry, they travel further because the air is thinner. There is less of it, and therefore less air resistance.

I read this morning that Betts has only been kept off the bases in 3 games this season. That is astounding.
