Hope that you few aren't suggesting that in general dojji's comment is wrong. Not everyone plays the game the same way. Of course there are always exceptions to the rule but in Pedroia's case he has played the game hard. he has thrown himself around to the extent that maybe he has gotten more out of himself than from a raw talent perspective he should have been able to. Other than running his mouth last year, it is hard to look at what he has done and not be pretty impressed. Maybe he comes back and gives a little more of the same and maybe he doesn't. A healthy knee, as some of you know I'm sure, is pretty important for a guy like Pedroia. You think he is cured? He can help us if he is reasonably healthy if not then it was worth a shot. 34-35 is not young for any 5'9" (wink wink) player who has a history of trouble with the same knee. I'm sure that we are all hoping for the best in his case.

It's so strange how sports makes someone seem so much older. Pedroia is only a few years older than me (I turn 31 next month), but as far as being a baseball player he might as well be pushing 60 the way people look at him. I guess it didn't help that he started going bald at about 16.

But it's more than that. His age, combined with his injury history, is cause for concern about his ability to perform well going forward.

I can't see how anyone would doubt his resolve to be a good player. It's just physiology.

The conclusions I see in here are disturbing and I'm glad many of you are NOT the G.M.

For what's worth I'd probably ruin this team too.

Correlation without causation. People assume that because the team is playing great now that guys like Pedey and Bogaerts would add nothing too it is just ludicrous. Guys will have peaks and valleys and as the season goes on having more talent will help push this team into the playoffs.

Cora indicated Bogaerts could return as early as the Tuesday game against the BJ's. There is no commitment to that, but if he is ready as decided by both Bogey and the trainer, then it is a possibility. He will be back and soon and then who goes off the 25 man?

X-bo is going to have a few games in Pawtucket before coming back. No chance he plays Tuesday

I guess Cora said he might play Tuesday off the top of his head then. no truth in his comments, whatsoever.

So players get old between 30 and 34? (wink wink)? Glad qwe could pin that down...

Not sure how to take this notin - my wink wink had to do with Pedroia's height. What's a que anyway?

Guys 30-34 aren't old, what the problem is, their contracts (money), most of the time don't match, their production. That's why the Farm is essential.

Also as you get older, the position you played when you were 23-29, you might not be able to play as you get older at your peak. It's just the way it is.

DH has helped a lot to keep, the real good hitters in the league. But just cant play the field anymore., as good as they once were.

Hope no one thinks that chronologically anyone is old at 35. Physically it's a whole different story.

A lot of us were in a lot better shape in our 30s than in our 20s. (That's one of the many reasons we were not professional athletes).

Bottom line. Pedroia more than earned the contract he signed with the Sox!

Having said that, I told many from his first year, that while I absolutely LOVED the way Pedroia played with reckless abandon, ABSOLUTE DIRTDOG PLAY, BALLS TO THE WALL, full throttle, brutally selling out his body on every single defensive play, all out on the base paths, & swinging that HUGE BAT from his ass on every swing, that I was worried about his body holding up over time.....

Well, I guess I was 1/2 right. I didn't think he'd make it this long in a Sox uniform, BUT I hate to even think about the day he is gone. Almost as much as Ortiz, I see Pedey's dirtdog run as an end of an era. He's the last dirtdog standing.

I LOVE Nunez, but Pedey is still twice the 2nd basenann (literally) he is.

I will also reluctantly admit that I was a bit disappointed with Pedey on his leadership last year. I'm sure he regrets not "being completely on board" with the guys on the Machado incident. The ONLY THING I think he had a problem with, was the reckless throw at his head. That was a tough throw to defend anyway. With respect to David Price, & the incidents with Drellich & Eck? I'm sure Pedey was reluctant to call out Price, given t he fact that DP had started to gain a number of high value young players as followers. I'm sure Pedey felt between a rock & a hard place in that situation, and frankly, that was 100% on Price. I hope Price has learned a lesson with respect to that, and I'm quite sure Cora wants none of that negativity with HIS team.

Pedey will come back and play his ass off for Cora, the guys, and the Red Sox. Of THIS, I AM 100% CERTAIN! He will try to help with leadership, BUT this is Cora's team now. The boys will follow him!

For the record, I am 55 and my body feels old as dirt. I'm in good shape, but with my blown out shoulder, bad hips, various neurological issues, sports has wrecked havoc on this body. You just can't beat father time, & play sports with reckless abandon for too long.

On that score, Pedey is a sports hero! If he plays 2 more years, I will be a very happy man!!!

2021? That would be a true modern medical miracle! I hope it happens!

Having played a lot of hockey, I constantly marvel at how these guys last as long as they do! Chara is a freak! The way these guys bang at HIGH SPEED night after night, and aren't on crutches by week 1 is miraculous!

Sorry for the non sequitur! ;)

I'm guessing because they don't take hits to the knees? (as in football). Also, maybe the nature of moving on skates lessens some of the impact? Blessedly, my team sports career ended before I got any bad injuries. Oddly, the 'most-dangerous-sport' I know is tennis (squash). Maybe because it induces 40-70 year old guys with a stupid macho complex to do more than their flabbed out bodies can take?

That's funny. I started playing competative tennis right around when I was 40. A few years later, bam, meniscus surgery. My knees haven't been right since. I still play, but I make sure to play like a 40 year old and not a 30 year old.

I'm 77 and play softball virtually year round. I have had no joint problems even though I admit to being 230 pounds on a 6'1" frame. Some guys just have the genes to survive the games while others are getting around on a cane. I had a guy on my softball team who was 87 and could outrun many of the guys in their late 60's. Great player and without problems. Pedey does have some wear and tear but could well come back and give us quality play at second. I am pulling for him.

Yep. Genes are a key!

I got betrayed by my body giving in to MS. Unlike many with MS, I've done ok. Still want to play in a hockey game one more time, and had to hang up my softball cleats & skates for the most part. Body just can't handle much anymore. Could still beat my then 15 year old sports son in a 40 yard beach sprint up til 5 years ago, but s***'s gone sideways since then.

Pedey will come back strong, and help this team in the 2018 World Series run!

I'm counting on it! :)

You have been blessed. I have beaten myself up over the years. I have always been fairly fit but the aches and pains are trying to catch up with me. Have to keep moving because the alternative really is no alternative.

If Holt has pulled his hamstring, the dilemma is temporarily solved in that hamstrings can take 6 weeks to heal for a severe one. I feel sorry for Holt as he was turning in a nice performance with the bat of late. Some guys are just unlucky> Perhaps with modern training the hamstrings can come along quicker or perhaps it is not a severe pull he suffered.

Hamstring strains/tears are brutal. The only type of strain/tear I consider more agonizing (from experience) are obliques.

From the reporting, it was hamstring tightness, whatever that means. Hamstrings are extemely hard to get over when they tear. Hope Holt doesn't have a tear as that would sideline him for the time being. In the meanwhile, I can't imagine him playing again soon as they will want to be very careful that whatever his condition is doesn't progress into a full tear. Typically, baseball players don't overdevelop their legs like running backs and they do a lot of stretching but these injuries do crop up from time to time, even in the adult leagues.

Ha! I do all I can to play like a 40 year old! Alas, for some damn reason, I always end up playing like someone 30 years older than that.

I think if he had torn it that he would have been much more hobbled than he was.

I did say *STRAINS* and tears, mind you.
There are varying degrees of strains. A popping feeling in the hamstring is not always a tear, but it is usually a very debilitating strain. The way that Holt was moving around after the play and how he was trying to stretch it out, I would think that it is a mild strain. Even mild strains can take a 10 day DL to heal.
