Matt Harvey to be DFA'd by the Mets.

That's quite a turn his career has taken over the last few years.

I remember a few years ago, some people on this board actually suggested moving Mookie for him..

John Smoltz became the latest ballplayer to find out what it's like playing golf with the big boys.

Smoltz won a qualifier to get in the US Senior Open, which is an impressive feat.

He shot 85-77, 22 over, to miss the cut by 14 strokes, finishing ahead of only about 10 others.

A little disappointing, I was hoping for him to make the cut, but the course is obviously brutally hard.

Interesting statistical anomaly today: The Twins did not record an out at first base for the entire game. All outs were made via flyout or K. No assists, either. Apparently it's only happened 5 times in the last 20 years. I understand my definition of interesting might not match anyone else's.

I find this very interesting.

My first reaction was surprise that it has happened 5 times in the last 20 years, but I guess if you have a pitcher getting a lot of Ks, it would be more likely to happen.

Good stuff.

https://deadspin.com/mariners-demand-180-million-in-public-funds-or-they-wo-1827920723

The Mariners’ ballpark cost $517 million in 1999 dollars and was paid for mostly with public money. The Mariners do pay rent, but it’s a fraction of what they’re asking for: $55 million in rent payments over the 25-year lease, vs. the $180 million they’re demanding. Majority owner John Stanton is a billionaire.

Glad to not be a Mariner's fan. The public has been trending away from these subsidized stadiums for good reason.

Were any of them the 20 strikeout performances by Roger Clemens, Kerry Wood or Randy Johnson?

I’m shocked this has actually happened 5 times in the past 2 decades....

So I was idly watching highlights on MLB video and I caught the Angels walkoff from a few days ago. Their radio announcer's call was "Drive home safely". Except he shouted it, with punctuation. "DRIVE! HOME! SAFELYYYYY!". That has to be the most anemic walkoff call anyone has ever shouted. Absolutely lame. It's barely a step above "FLY BALL DEEP TO LEFT....BACK...BACK...AAAAAAAND PLEASE EXIT IN AN ORDERLY FASHION AND DISPOSE OF ALL TRASH IN MARKED RECEPTACLES, THANK YOU FOR VISITING OUR STADIUM!"

The term 'walk-off win' is lame to begin with, since the way it's used is completely bass-ackwards of its original meaning. Eck coined the term and used it to describe the losing pitcher sadly walking off the mound.

See, the losing team walks off, while the winning team goes nuts...

But now it's called a 'walk-off win'. Oh well, most people aren't very bright, what do you expect...

In the words of Carnac The Magnificent: "I did not know that."

Right now I like the A's to pull a miracle and win the division. Put the Astros into the WC game.

Could happen.

I think they are only 5 back from the 'stros.

I know Cora is likely the favorite at this point, but how about Bob Melvin for manager of the year? Sure the A's have a ton of young talent, but nobody could have thought they would be ready this season. They play so fearlessly

Seattle looks helpless. They have a -13 runs differential

Seattle has been playing well above their Pythagorean W-L record for a while. Their slide was bound to happen.

Houston, OTOH, is 6 games below their Pythagorean W-L. Based on run differential, I don't see the As catching the 'Stros. Houston is a far better team.

It's those random 1 run games that no one wants to believe me about.

This surprises me coming from you.

One should expect a regression to the norm and not a bad stretch that evens things out.

It's like flipping a coin heads 5 times in a row- it's still a 50-50 call on the 6th flip.

Give me some credit Moon. I understand what regression means. It's almost like I posted something very similar before about coin flips. Oh wait, I did.

Returning to a career season? No.

We are talking about regressing to the mean.

Mookie's career slash line is .292/.351/.488. Last year, he hit .264/.344/.459. Mookie is likely to regress this year and hit closer to that career line.

FTR, regression does not mean that if you flip a coin 100 times and you get 80 heads, that in the next 100 flips you will only get 20 heads to 'balance out' the 80 heads. It means that in the next 100 flips the number of heads that you get will be much closer to the expected number of 50.

I am not talking about a slide to the point of evening things out. I am talking about the Mariners' slide in the division race, which was completely expected.

Random thoughts of the day:

-A bit surprisingly, Manny Machado is kind of doing jacksquat for the Dodgers so far.

-Yasiel Puig - there's a fine line between being flamboyant/passionate and being a complete idiot.

-Cubs starters Lester and Quintana are really struggling lately.

Posted

Machado and Puig are both players that strike me as "punkish" type players.

The Dodgers would be a difficult team for me to root for.

Also interesting to note that the Athletics have closed the division lead to just one game. It's amazing how well they have played and how much ground they have made up.
