So would I, if I had the skills. :) So far I haven't seen any indication that he can do anything at the ML level other than catch.

He's athletic and was going to be the starting SS for Team USA, but a guy named Francisco Lindor showed up.

Source: Red Sox want to, trying to sign BOTH J.D. Martinez and Eric Hosmer.

I think Hosmer is just a fallback plan. I don't think they want to sign both. If they did, the lineup would be much better. Hosmer is a big question mark to me. I'd stay away.

I'd rather have neither than both.

You just want a Moose?

No.

I do NOT want Hosmer.

His money and years will kill us.

I'd love to have JD.

I'd prefer Moose over Hosmer, but it's more about thinking Hosmer is the worst FA on the board (per dollar and years).

I'm not getting the dislike for Hosmer on here. He is a good first baseman , good hitter with some pop ,some speed and , seemingly , a good guy. A durable player , who appears to be entering his prime. Is it the money that is the problem ? Not to worry. John Henry has plenty of it. I say , sign Martinez and , if possible , Hosmer. Trade JBJ , unless you can get lucky and somehow move Hanley. Then get a top starting pitcher and a lefty for the pen. All set to battle the Yankees for dominance.

Is Devers ready to play 1B? Id rather have Frazier/Marerro splitting time at 3B. Frazier had a 3WAR season.

He doesn't own a 1b mitt. Leave him at 3b until he grows out of the position years down the line. For now, he's too valuable at 3b. I'd move Frazier to 1b before moving Devers off the position.

He's fine, but ultimately probably not worth a long term contract. He doesn't have the one skill set the Sox really need: power.

Yeah, I don't think Hosmer is a bad player or anything - he's just very inconsistent from year to year, not really the sort of middle-of-the-order game-changer we could use (though that's less of an issue if we're also signing JDM), has a QO, and seems headed for a significantly bigger contract than I'd prefer...but it all depends on the price tag, of course.

Martinez would supply the power. I see nothing wrong with signing them both. It would be a very good lineup , top to bottom.

I'll have to agree with moon on this one. Martinez yes, Hosmer no. Hosmer is a good player but not a $20 million player. The money would be better spent on pitching.

He's extremely inconsistent from year-to-year.

WAR

-1.7 2012

+3.2 2013

0.0 2014

+3.5 2015

-0.1 2016

+4.1 2017

His defense was over-rated from day one and has gotten worse.

-18 DRS from 2016-2017 with a minus UZR/150 both years. (Granted, he's good at digging out bad throws- see Devers)

We need more power. He does not have more power than Moreland.

Career IDO

.155 Hosmer (.179 in 2017)

.187 Moreland (.189 in 2017)

He is said to be getting 5-6 years, which is sick.

He is said to be getting $20M+, which is sicker. (MLBTR projects $22M x 6)

Combined and we have a vomitorium on our hands.

That is the best way to say it.

He is just an expensive version of Moreland, I think.

Too funny!!!

Sandy Leon is a cheap, perfectly adequate backup catcher. I don't know what some people are expecting in that position.

Agreed. I would even be okay with a 60-40 platoon again, only with Vaz getting the 60% over Leon. I'd prefer 80-20, but I'd be okay with 60-40.

I have no problem with Hosmer at the right price, but I do have a problem with him if we have to give him a big contract. Yes, we know Henry has a lot of money. We also know that even with all of his money, bad contracts to players like Hosmer can handcuff a team.

I've crapped on Hosmer enough to cover him with a mountain, but he is probably better than Moreland. My main issue is the money AND the years. Second is what Hosmer will we get? The 2012, 2014 and 2016 or the 2013, 2015 and 2017 Hosmer?

This news that the Sox are pursuing singing BOTH JD and Hosmer has me puking.

I'm fine with JD but an over-pay for a largely lateral move at 1st is just dumb.

I don't see Abreu as a significant upgrade over Santana.

I suppose we could sign JD and trade JBJ for prospects to flip to the CWS for Abreu, but I'd still rather just sign Santana or maybe even Morrison.

I think this is probably the best option. Id even expand on it. Cut Hanley and Pedroia as well. Eat the money and start over with a new look.

I like that idea. Of course it is not my money.

Are we, maybe, just over reacting a bit!

So far nothing has happened, just news reports that may or may be substantiated.

I think everyone needs to take a deep breath and tone the rhetoric down for a second.

Everybody just needs to remember this simple fact:

Much like the neutered dog, dave just does not get it!!!!!!!
