What would you do with Swihart when Nunez is activated?

I think the solution might be Nunez to the bench, Moreland to first, Hanley to DH, Martinez to LF, Benintendi to CF and Bradley to Pawtucket. Swihart will be unaffected.

But they could also DFA Swihart. It doesn't look like they will miss him...

Does Bradley have options left? I thought they would need to put him through waivers in order to send him down.

Swihart is heading for a DFA. He's a first ball swinging guy without power or OBP. His worth was as a high average hitter for his position. Now that he has no position, he is effectively useless. Someone will snap him up off the DFA pile and try to resurrect his career as a catcher, but that ship has sailed in Boston

According to SoxProspects, he does have 1 left, and with 3 years service time, he can't turn down the assignment. But he didn't exactly light it up in AAA in 2014 when they sent him down under similar circumstances and you really have to wonder how he would take it now. As I've written, his hitting woes have crossed 2 managers and 3 hitting coaches.

I think they will DFA Swihart if they can't trade him. I see them being very patient with Bradley.

They can trade him after they DFA him, too...

If the Mets could trade a broken down Matt Harvey after DFAing him, I think we could get something for Swihart.

The Mets didn't get much. Mesoraco is a shell of himself and being paid highly. Also, Harvey had been an ace. Swihart never did anything in the majors
LOL! Mesoraca is now the Mets starting catcher, and he did hit a HR the other day for him. I doubt that we get a starting position player for Swihart.

Mesoraco being their starter isn't a positive notation for Mesoraco, rather a significant detractor of the Met's abhorrent catcher depth.

He still improved their team.

They should send him down yesterday. Unfortunately, he has shown us exactly what he can do at the plate. Add to that the fact that he is uncoachable, and I think his future with this team is almost as nebulous as that of Swihart, who never got a fair chance at catcher and playing regularly.

Bradley is in a terrible slump. However , he has established himself as a major leaguer. Optioning him to Pawtucket would be a slap in the face. I doubt very much that is a consideration. Cora will continue to try and help him break out of it. When Pedroia returns , it should come down to a choice between Swihart and Leon. The other possibility is some manipulation of the D.L.

Mesoraco is also a major leaguer. That isn't nothing.

Getting a 27yo AA player is nothing...

Bradley has an OPS of .520. It would be a slap in the face if he had an OPS of .720, but right now he is showing the world he has some bugs to work out at the plate. He's been there before.

Sending him to AAA allows the Sox to keep everyone...

This has got to stop. If Swihart were anything resembling a decent catcher, he would have been given a shot. He caught in 83 games in 2015 (78 starts); he was not good. He was horrible at balls in the dirt. My guess is that has not improved.

He has caught 1 inning this year. He is listed on the roster as an outfielder. I have no idea if he caught at all in spring training, but he's listed in those stats as an outfielder and he certainly didn't catch much if he did. He isn't going to cut it as a catcher; people need to start accepting that and stop pretending we see something that the professionals (Cora, and the rest of the staff) don't.

The organization has obviously decided that he isn't a major league catcher as they haven't let him go near a catcher's mitt except for 1 inning.

I think we need to trust that judgement. If he was even close to MLB quality, he'd be playing in mop-up situations (although we haven't had many of those).

Ya. And I'm not sure that's entirely fair to Swihart - or to the organization, for that matter.

At one time Swi and Vaz were our "gold dust twins" at catcher. In fact, IIRC Swi got the bulk of the catching until Leon caught fire offensively during Vaz surgery year. Then when Vaz came back Leon rode the wave of his good year into being one of the two regular catchers and Swi became 'odd man out'. That's when they moved Swi to the OF because they liked his bat.

I'm still of the opinion that they guy could be a good #2 catcher for someone. I also think the reason the Sox have kept him for as long as they have is because he fits into their catching plans for 2018, but hell, I have no contacts in the Sox FO so I could be wrong. It wouldn't be the first time!!

Maybe some teams don't value catcher defense as much as we do, or their catchers are so weak, they'll try anything.

We won't get much, if anything, in trade, but it's probably best to give Swi a shot elsewhere.

I had expected us to PH for our catchers more often- perhaps even twice in one game by utilizing Swi's 3rd catcher role. The fact that we have not hints that management is terrified of using Swi behind the plate at all.

Maybe. But Cora has stated that Swi continues to work with the catching coach every day. He take fielding practice at Catcher, 2nd, and OF and catches sessions in the pen.

He also reviews tape and scouting reports as do the other two catchers. Every day.

Why would the Sox dedicate that much time to catching work on the guy if they had given up on him?

Mesoraca has played quite well for the Mets thus far -- a nice upgrade. He hit a 2 run HR in the 9th to tie the game tonight.

Saw some of pedroia’s swings At Pawtucket and he seemed to be turning on pitches really well with no problems from the knee.
Great news! And We need his glove more than his bat.

I'd like to catch a Mets game with you. That would be a blast.

Of course it would probably require booster inoculation shots to travel to New York City.

Not including airports 1986, I believe.

The city, that is.

So Pedey's out with knee pain and Mookie is out for the fourth straight game with "slight pain in his side".

I can't decide if our "crack medical team" is incompetent or if they're continuing to treat us like mushrooms by keeping us in the dark and feeding us ********.
