Everybody seems dead set against it, but I am hopeful chavis is our second baseman next season.

Betts

Bogey

Benintendi

JD Martinez

Hanley

Devers

Chavis

Vazquez

Bradley

I brought it up in the first place after reading a report that he was more likely to fit at 2nd then 3rd. They haven't done much to play him at 2nd yet, but it does make some sense. We have a need and he looks like an up and coming MLer. Getting a low cost player in the lineup with a good bat should be considered but the Sox would have to prepare him.

The Infield defense would be brutal, though. I'm assuming Hanley at 1b (with Martinez at DH), Chavis at 2b, Bogaerts at SS, and Devers at 3b. Could be the worst infield defense in the AL.

I would rather go with Lin at 2b, Chavis at 1b, Hanley to part time player.

It would be the worst Sox infield defense in my memory.

We'd also maybe have the best Sox OF/catcher defensive combination in my memory.

Is this a significant IF defensive upgrade?

1B Devers (HRam)

2B Pedey

3B Bogey

SS Cozart

(DH: HRam)

A Kansas City blogger suggests a trade of Whit Merrrifield, Kelvim Herrera and Ryan Buchter for Michael Chavis, Brock Holt and Austin Maddox:

https://kingsofkauffman.com/2017/10/29/kansas-city-royals-trade-whit-merrifield-boston-red-sox/

The nearly 29-year-old Merrifield, who posted 3.1 fWAR this year while leading the American League in stolen bases, remains under team control for five years after playing 132 of his 145 games at second base this season.

The nearly 28-year-old Herrera, a two-time All Star reliever, remains under team control for one season at a hefty projected arbitration salary of $8.3 million.

Buchter, a nearly 31-year-old reliever, remains under team control for five seasons.

I suspect the KC blogger seriously overstates the trade value of Chavis and Holt. The Red Sox would likely do that deal in a heartbeat.

Maddox would be the centerpiece of the deal, and you barely mentioned him.

I'm not sure how desperate KC is to cut salary as they have Hosmer & Mosse coming off the books, but I do think they'll want to dump Herrera and his $8M arb.

I'm not so sure the Sox are looking to take on that kind of salary for RP'ers and 2B. Their biggest need is clean-up hitting, 1B, 4th OF and SP'ing. This deal fills none of their biggest needs.

What do we do when Pedey comes back? Bench Merrifield or HRam?

Interesting trade suggestion, though.

Austin Maddox is a 26-year-old prospect ranked 21st and 28th in a mediocre Red Sox farm system, according to SoxProspects and MLB Prospect Watch:

Maddox averaged 4.7 walks per nine innings this year in 49.1 minor league innings.

The same soxprospects.com has Maddox listed as our 5th RP'er next year ahead of Hembree, Scott, Workman, Thornburg, Ross and others.

I do agree. The Sox would make the deal in a heartbeat.

Merrifield has played a lot of OF in the minors, so he could double as our 4th OF'er.

I'd even throw in another mid-level prospect like Shawaryn or Travis, if needed.

The SoxProspects summation on righthanded reliever Austin Maddox:

Summation: Projects as an organizational arm. Average three-pitch mix. Throws strikes, usually around the zone. Lacks above-average offering to project as a major league arm, but if any pitch takes a step forward, could get a cup of coffee. Should develop into a solid organizational bullpen arm who bounces around the high minors.

I don't think they've updated his profile. He got more than a "cup of coffee" already.

Either way, he's worth more than Holt.

I'm wondering, if they'd want Hembree, who is out of options.

It should be updated to say "a pot of coffee."

Whit Merrifield tied Jackie Bradley Jr. for the team lead in home runs on the 2010 University of South Carolina baseball team:

Merrifield was the only Gamecock to start all 70 games that season.

What would Minn want for Dozier ($9M/1) & Santana ($28M/2)?

Would they add Mauer ($18M/1)?

Is Phil Hughes a salary dump at this point at $26.4M/2?

If yes, would taking him lessen what is asked in return?

Austin Maddox was taken in the same 2012 MLB draft as his University of Florida teammates: Brian Johnson and Mike Zunino.

With a solid core of young players in Byron Buxton, Jose Berrios, Miguel Sano, Jorge Polanco, Max Kepler and Eddie Rosario, the Minnesota Twins will be looking to overtake the Red Sox next year after advancing to the postseason this season.

I don't see the Twins trading away their veterans.

In contrast with the Red Sox, the Twins have prospects ranked No. 26, No. 29, No. 63 and No. 70 at MLB Prospect Watch:

My guess is they will be sellers at the deadline.

That's possible, although the Red Sox may be sellers as well with Craig Kimbrel, Drew Pomeranz, Joe Kelly, Jackie Bradley Jr. and Robbie Ross (and Rick Porcello, David Price and Hanley Ramirez if a market develops for them).

It's true. Wouldn't that be something now?

Yes, the Sox could conceivably be sellers next July, but if I had to bet on MN or BOS to be sellers, I'll choose the Twins.

The Sox will not be seller next July. Guaranteed.

The Red Sox were one of the teams who called the Orioles on Manny Machado.

that's weird. no Sox players are out with surgeries. DH Devers?

PER SOURCES: that would move Devers to 1b or "a greater shift in the left side of the IF" (i.e. bye bye Bogey).
