Oh I don't know. I think Cora is very good. But it is possible I am wrong. But it is hard to look at the Red Sox record over his two tenures and feel like they have not largely maximized the roster.

Yeah, I don't think you can point to any of Cora's Red Sox teams and say they badly underachieved.

Morgan Magic didn't win any postseason games, as I recall.

No, but at this point I think most would be glad as hell just to make the postseason.

On Sept 1 the Yankees were 65-69, and the Red Sox were 69-65. At that point the Yankees had nothing to play for, and the Red Sox had a postseason slot still in reach. Look at what’s happened since. The Yankees have gone 15-8, and the Red Sox have gone 7-16. The Yankees are playing to the end, and the Red Sox are not. Not a good look for Cora.

Or the pitching is even more exposed for being ineffective. Cora doesn't pitch, hit or field. He can only pencil in players for the incoherent mess of a roster he was given.

The frustrating part is how much the offense went in the tank. Losing Duran and then Casas, Turner getting banged up, Story and Yoshida not doing much. At least the kids are hitting a little.

Just another fustercluck of a season. Back-to-backers.

I don't think you believed that at the time.

Not a good look for the players, either.

They were all so well-rested.

I agree the players are the biggest culprits. Where is the leadership, or the so called leaders?

I'm not sure anyone can lead an injured brigade of mediocrity to greatness, I'm not sure even Pedey could have helped this team.

I didn’t, but most on here did. I heard the team was on pace for 84-87 wins, but that pace slowed to a crawl. The pitching was in shambles, and the upcoming schedule was to tough to tame for me to see that even coming close to happening.

He'd be part of the injured brigade.

Most? Not even close. Vast minority at best. By the time that series started, it was over. There was hope after the Yankees sweep in mid August, but they split with HOU when they needed to win the series and then lost to LAD at home and got swept by HOU at home to end AUG. It was obvious that Betts et al ended their season the last weekend in August at the latest. I think the season died early August when TOR swept them at home.

Good, we mine as well tank and go for the #1 pick now.

On Aug 25th you said 84 wins, and Moon said 87 wins for the Sox. Even back then I did not see that happening for the two reasons I stated earlier.

Pick a side.

Couldn't resist taking a shot at Yoshida-san.

His .640 OPS in August and .641 in September have contributed to the offensive slide.

That's indisputable fact.

84 wins doesn't get them into the playoffs. They'd wind up like 4 games out of it at year end.

He has hit plenty of ground balls for infield practice for the opposing teams though.

I know, but I just didn’t see them winning 84 games. Getting just to 81 I guess would have been a major accomplishment for the way this team had played most of the year, with the bad D, bad base running, inconsistent O, and whatever you want to call the pitching staff.

Therefore he was still useful and productive

Agreed, and I said the same thing about last year's team that supposedly had veteran leadership in JD, Bogey, Nate, Vaz and others.

If he had hit all those ground balls vs the Sox infield D all season, he'd be leading the league in BA and OBP.

Let's face it, we're always grasping for things to blame failure on.

Cora is a genius

Cora is doing what he should be doing. Build up the IP for his like Crawforf, Houck and Bello; give some opportunities to the potential future pieces in Abreu, Rafaela and Valdez; and make a modest effort to actually win since you are in a position to impact a pennant race and do need to honor that…
