It might mean 6 pitchers and Moreland got hurt.

Or it might mean Martinez signed elsewhere and Wright never claimed that fifth spot. Both are fairly possible..

Maybe normal, but for most of our recent ring years, we got by with almost all our starts from 5-6 starters.

It's bad news, if Buch gets just one start. It will mean 2 guys got hurt and at least Velazquez and Johnson had bombed out.

So if two guys get hurt and Velasquez and Johnson bombs out, you prefer a starter who can't beat out Clay Buchholz?

ERod will be coming back mid season. We need a starter who can start in April and May. I seriously dou bt it can or will be Buch.

I also doubt Buch can beat out many journeymen starters signing minor league deals this time of year. I guess, if he can beat out one or two, in theory, I'd take him over those two.

Problem is, we won't know until it's too late.

Buch sucks.

Let him sign with the Yanks.

We don't even know if Buch will be healthy for ST. I don't see why the Sox would bring him in.

On a minor league deal? Whats the f***ing harm?

When ML guys sign minor league deals, there is typically language that they will be brought up by a certain date or released. I wouldn't want the Sox to feel compelled to call up a broken down and fragile 33 year old over a younger pitcher with more upside.

Do since ERod is coming back, you're saying that should do it and y he Six don't neef any more starting pitching for 2018? Thankfully ERod really is a 200IP workhorse....

It's not a typical clause and players who do have one seem to get released about half the time.

Really this is all anti-Buchholz stuff. Were it another pitcher or a pitcher who showed flashes but was injured on another team, most would be saying "Minor league deal? Sure. There's no risk." But instead we have people speculating about his health. And one guy who thinks Buchholz on a minor league deal is bad, but the oft-injured but successful when healthy Alex Cobb is a good idea...

He sucks. They can do better. Why waste a roster spot in AAA?

A minor league contract doesn't guarantee a roster spot. Just a tryout for one...

It is a pretty typical clause. Especially for guys who are used to being paid as top of the rotation starters. To think he's just going to sit in AAA all year is kinda laughable tbh.

He's 33. He has a lengthy injury history, a slight frame and an uneven track record when healthy. If you think he's even remotely similar to Alex Cobb, I really don't know what to say. Cobb has been a 2 WAR pitcher every year that he's appeared in 10+ games. The majority of Buchholz's seasons have been worth less than 1 WAR.

What's the f***ing use or upside?

If he was willing to sign a minor league deal and if he demonstrated he was healthy, it's pretty much the same use and upside as all the other dumpster dives.

But you already know all that.

It's not common or a big deal. If Buchholz insists on it, he still has to earn the spot over other pitchers. Not sure why people think a minor league deal means a mandatory appearance.

If you think the Sox should be compelled to call him up just because, then we have the wrong idiot at GM..

That he might be better than anyone we have in AAA?

You could use the same argument for signing Ubaldo Jimenez.

edit - Garza is injured

And I see zero harm in giving him a minor league deal either..

So might the other dozens of unsigned guys I'd prefer.

Honestly, PAW should just be 25 starting pitchers on MiLB deals.

Speaking of the PAW Roster, if Swihart, Brentz, Marrero and Johnson make the big roster due to no options remaining, then Holt and others start in AAA.

SP: Velazquez, Beeks, Elias, Haley, Shepherd (Shawaryn, Lakins & Stanky in AA)

RP: Workman, Taylor, Buttrey, Martin, Jerez, Cuevas, Poyner, Walden (Cosart in AA)

C: Butler & Romanski

1B: Travis (Ockimey in AA)

2B: Holt/Quiroz

3B: Chavis/ de Jesus

SS: Lin/Holt/ M Miller

LF: Tavarez

CF: Castillo

RF: Barfield/Mars

DH: Witte

Mookie won his arbitration case and gets $10.5 million this year.

That makes a difference of $3 million in the luxury tax calculation ... and provides a higher base for his final two arbitration seasons.

And I see no harm in any of them getting minor league contracts, something I can safely say without knowing who any of them even are...
