I doubt Scott Boras is inclined to play along with amateurs.

Perhaps the Red Sox are prepared to go with the lineup projected at Roster Resource:

RF Betts ®

LF Benintendi (L)

SS Bogaerts ®

1B Moreland (L)

DH Ramirez ®

3B Devers (L)

CF Bradley (L)

C Vazquez ®

2B Hernandez (L)

Perhaps we will add a SP'er instead plus someone like Duda to hedge against HRam.

Then, he can take his ball and go home. It's his client who would suffer (assuming we have the top bid and nobody will top it going forward).\

Look, I realize there are more professional ways to get the same point across, such as, "We need to have an answer by _____, or we will move on to someone else."

Scott Boras and Dave Dombrowski are professionals who have dealt with each other in the past. Either side can politely give the opposing negotiator a deadline on an offer. Boras could be the party saying "We need to have an answer by _____ or we're moving on."

The Red Sox and J.D. Martinez may not have appealing alternatives ... or maybe each does. We don't know.

I'm pretty sure that neither side is going to set a deadline but my belief is that JD Martinez faces by far the greater risk here. If the Red Sox decide to move away from him (which I hope they do), and head in a different direction, he likely will be screwed. The Red Spx will still be just fine if they go for a little less power and a pitching upgrade. Martinez stands a chance to lose a lot of money.

Its also highly unlikely that DD is going to allow this uncertainty to go on forever. Thats just plain stupid. He will not be making public his negotiating tactics, but I am quite sure that he has a deadline in mind. Eventually it will be time to move on.

Yes, I realize Boras might issue an ultimatum, but it would be rare for an agent to tell the Red Sox, (again, assuming we are the top bidder right now) to up their offer of be shut out of any further negotiations.

If the BS about wanting more money, because we will force him to DH against his wishes, then that is a choice JD will make- less money to play OF.

I just can't see DD thinking a DH should make more money than an OF'er, and he shouldn't. If this is indeed the situation, then I could care less who may end up issuing an ultimatum.

Parting ways will not be the end of the world, unless it drags on beyond the point where secondary options are still available.

If Boras wants to "move on" to lower offer, go for it. One can only gather, he is following JD's wishes. If JD is so firmly against DH'ing, then I don't want him here anyways. I suspect it's all a ploy to try and get more, and Boras will accept any ultimatum the Sox present, unless someone else has an equal or close offer and an Of opening.

Is signing Cobb, Nunez and Duda enough to not be considered "standing pat?"

Hey, if JD has better offers or offers he likes better, he can take them.

If not and he settles for less, it won't reflect well on Boras.

The Sox will have to settle for a lesser DH option for a year, but they will save for a good down payment for Manny Machado...

Great post CP - I'm with you! Has it really come to this? In a rut and talking to myself.

Lol. I read your posts. And I agree with you here.

Borrass can eat s*** and die for all I care. And JD is sounding more like a player that does not belong in Boston as this thing continues. He can suck a dick, too.

By the way, you would be interested in the interview with Britton from the P Journal that I heard earlier. Swihart will be on the opening day roster unless he gets traded which is very doubtful. Third catcher + super sub in general. Corner infield and (gasp) maybe some outfield. You already know I'm sure that he says he is very healthy and ready to go. I think that they are very curious to see what he can do. Me too!

Being able to play LF and a corner IF position as well as be our 3rd catcher has a lot of value-- assuming he can hit.

It's nice to be able to PH for Vaz or Leon and not have to worry about an in-game injury to the back-up.

Swihart being able to play LF might make Brentz the odd man out. It also makes trading Holt more palatable.

My guess is Marrero starts on the phantom DL, gets traded or DFA'd.

When yourself starts talking back, it's time for a vacation or something.

Absolutely - not interested. Bringing in a known PED user and changing the name of Yawkey Way, would seem to be the height of hypocrisy. Not going to happen.

I am not interested in Braun either.

Of course not...but none of that has happened yet. In fact, as far as I recall, all that has happened is signing Moreland.

Holt and Hernandez both have options. It could a case of one winning the starting job and the other heading to Pawtucket...

And Esteban Quiroz. Don't forget him. After all, he does represent 50% of Dombrowski 's work these past 11 weeks...

Oh yeah....him. I will double his pay immediately for that effort.

I'm a huge Swihart fanboy so don't crush me for saying this .I think Blake is going to really do well this year as long as he gets consistent at bats .I think. There is a big trade at foot right now ,some of these redundant pieces must go .

I'm not sure keeping Marrero on the 25 or 40 man roster is a high priority, but you're right. Letting Holt or Hernandez start in AAA is not a horrible thing, since it does allow us to keep depth.

Note: we do also have Quiroz and Lin, so saying bye-bye to Marrero would be no big loss.

I think we keep all three catchers. I realize getting rid of Leon gets Swihart more "consistent at bats," but I see Swihart's best chance at being impactful is to beat out Brentz and squeeze into a back-up corner IF role by hitting well out of the gate (including ST'ing).

Note: If we sign JD, Brentz is "redundant", and Swihart's OF role will be severely diminished. I see Brentz being traded, if we sign JD.

The biggest redundancy is at middle IF bench, but with Pedey's season and career in doubt, that's not a bad thing. Wheni t comes to trading one of them, one has to wonder about the return (or lack of one).

Marco

Holt

Marrero (no options)

Quiroz

Lin

(Tobias/ de Jesus/ M Miller)

No one still trade anything worthwhile for Brentz.

Do Bryce a favor and simply DFA him for the purposes giving him an unconditional release. ...

Not now.

If we miss out on JD, and Swihart does not impress this spring, Brentz is the clear choice at 4th OF.

The entire trade was conditional on signing JD.

Although I'd DFA Brentz anyway.

I've never been high on Brentz, but a spring training invite is harmless.

It's not like keeping Brentz on the roster is keeping someone better off it.

In isolation, if we sign....

JD, we trade/DFA Brentz

Nunez, we trade/DFA Marrero

Duda, we trade HRam (Brentz?)

Arrieta, Cobb or Lynn, we trade Johnson

I think has been burning up his cell phone minutes trying to find any team out there even remotely interested in Hanley.

Unfortunately no one is biting!

But I give dave his props for attempting the impossible!!!!

Thanks Larry!!!

What's the harm in giving Brentz a chance? Maybe he impresses in ST and the Sox can trade him for some small piece rather than just DFAing him. Or maybe he can actually contribute to the team as a 4th OF. If not, he can always be DFA'd later.

Hanley gets no love.

If he's truly healthy, I think he will hit pretty well. He gets it. He knows that he needs to hit in order to stay in the lineup.
