Very simply, Red Sox front office agreed it was time for a change

Guess I'm a Speier fan now? Every other media member is losing their s*** over the Sox not giving them dirt.

Speier is the best of the guys who cover the team every day imo

Giancarlo Stanton, who turns 28 years old next month, has 10 years and $295 million remaining on his contract.

Manny Ramirez was 28 years old in December 2000 when the Red Sox signed the slugger to an eight-year, $160 million contract coming off his injury-plagued season.

Stanton's career line and the latter's line when the Red Sox signed Ramirez:

GS 4120 PA, .268/.360/.554/.914, OPS+ 146. 34.1 fWAR, 35.1 bWAR

MR 4095 PA, .313/.407/.592/.998, OPS+ 152, 30.7 fWAR, 29.9 bWAR

Just food for thought.

14 years in baseball salary inflation is a few lifetimes. Baring any injuries, or a huge drop in production Stanton will be worth every bit of that contract as Manny was.

Agreed, and his luxury tax cost is just $25M-- a huge plus to teams near or over the limit--like the Sox.

Ohtani can be offered the most money in NY and a few other places, not Boston. That being said, the difference is minimal in terms of professional baseball salaries. I hope the Yankees have the inside track, but nobody really knows right now

Otani is getting ankle surgery.

The cost in talent would worry me more than Stanton's contract (which really isn't terribly unreasonable).

Pick up some SP depth and the obligatory reliever or two, re-sign Nunez (maybe a necessity if Pedroia is going to need surgery and miss significant time), steal Ohtani if you can, and BRING ME JD MARTINEZ... then call it a winter.

I think Jeter bites at a package that include Bradley and Bogaerts and not much else.

Not to me. If it weren't for the advancement of microprocessor technology that dweeb would not have his job.

He shows no real understanding of the game, only an ability to state stats and crap he found on his device.

This is what the best and brightest of TS is saying these days.

Nearly five years ago the eight-year Manny Ramirez contract was valued at $210.6 million, adjusted for inflation:

Inflation over the past five seasons should push the Ramirez value passed the current amount owed Giancarlo Stanton (whose lock-in terms should counter inflation over the next 10 years).

Considering he has an opt-out after 2020, this might very well not be true.

He may be looking longer term and want 2-4 from Groome, Chavis, Mata Flores, Brannen or Scherff.

Of course, he could get JBJ and Bogey and flip them now or later.

He can't trade Stanton without getting one or 2 players who can play for the Marlins now.

It doesn't matter. The Marlins aren't filling that stadium no matter what the lineup is.

It can get emptier. You have to give the fans something to watch. Giving up a wrecking ball like Stanton (their only player putting asses in the seats) for minor leaguers would drop their attendance to 1979 Oakland A's levels.

He has two herniated disks, or basically the same issue Clayton Kershaw has. It's possible he is fine by spring training. But his triple crown days are over....

I would also think that the extra weight Miggy carries around would hamper his ability to heal as quickly and maybe as completely as a player like Kershaw.

Dombrowski is doing and saying all the correct things.

As I said before, Dombrowski will get us a big bat because that's what is expected.

It feels like there could be a bad contract in the making. Panicky. Or as Larry Cook likes to say, Desperate Dave. LOL

My thoughts are that we are all going to be stunned at some point this off-season. it is pretty clear that this team wants a World Series now as in sooner as opposed to later. If that is going to happen then there will have to be major player changes. Changing coaches alone just ain't going to get it done. In all honesty, I don't think that anyone of these guys that we have playing everyday have shown us that they are so good that we just could not get by without them. We are comfortable with them but that is about it. We hope that they will get better. I don't think that DD works like this.

Any time you're talking 10 years in a contract, it's unreasonable.

I would much rather sign Martinez than Stanton. I'd actually be okay going status quo with the offense and bringing in another #2 starter.

Yes lets just stand pat with an offense that can not get enough done since it worked out so well this year and all.

And it's not like anyone else in the division or the Al is going to improve.

Nope.

The Sox will be fine.

Status quo for the offense will not work at all. We sucked offensively this year, and even if this group improves, other teams will be upgrading.

In just about any business if you are stagnant you go backwards.

Surely injuries played a part in not going deep but that must be planned for every year as well.

The Marlins post-season hopes ended with Jose Fernandez and dealing Stanton throws them into full rebuild, so players with 2 and 3 years of service time left have little appeal.

However it is possible the Sox could deal Bradley (Cubs?) and Bogaerts (Dismondbacks?) for top flight prospects who could potentially be flipped for Stanton, possibly with not much else added...

Is DD known for such creativity? I like the idea.
