I wouldn't do it, but this might get TB to say yes...

Beni, ERod, Brentz and Marrero

for

Archer & Dickerson

You aren't thinking. Too much for too little.

It seems like a good deal for us, but...

If we sign JD, then Dickerson has no place to play near FT.

We lose one of our 6th starter options.

I guess, if we signed JD and traded JBJ for a SP'er, then Dickerson could play LF and DH, helping to squeeze HRam from vesting and giving us a nice LH'd bat.

It's hard to pass up a career .866 OPS vs RHPs guy.

Dickerson career numbers vs RHPs per 650 PAs

.284 32 83 (38 2B + 3B) (.331 OBP)

Bonus: +8.7 UZR/150 over the last 2 seasons combined in LF & OF.

I'd say yes, but if we sign JD, Dickerson might put us over the major penalty limit. If so, I'd have to say no.

If Dickerson is so good, why ared they dumping him. His salary isn't that high.

That would be an awful deal for us.

Yes it is. Dombrowski did a good job with that.

And I read today that Nunez' preference was always to return to the Red Sox. I know that's what any player is going to say, but it makes me feel better. :)

Also read that the Sox gave Nunez a workout in December, but he didn't pass. Gave him another one in January, he improved but he still didn't pass. So it appears that the 2 sides have been working together on a reunion for a couple of months.

Oh that's interesting. Clearly both parties wanted it. Makes me even happier with the deal.

That would help solve our roster crunch issues a little, but yes, someone else may be able to top that offer.

How about Hembree, Johnson and Brentz?

Maybe try to expand a trade to include Archer.

that'd be neat - but Archer is such a valuable commodity that I think Tampa will want to get as many bidders in as possible.

I wouldn't let go of Benintendi for anything other than a superstar. The kid has great potential for a lot of years.

I agree. To be fair, 4 years of a guy who, while somewhat inconsistent, has been on the verge of a true #1 pitcher (and sure as heck has the stuff of one) is at least a return which is fair.

That is within the realm of possibility.

It is also within the realm of possibility that Seattle left fielder Ben Gamel will outproduce Boston left fielder Andrew Benintendi this year (as Gamel did for half a season last year).

But I wouldn't bet on it.:)

My point is that Benintendi is a less-proven commodity than Chris Archer.

How can these projections be based on anything? Swihart hasn’t had a healthy season since 2015. No one can realistically say what he can do at the moment.

Exactly, and that 2015 season was petty decent, at least offensively.

1) His salary is "high" (or too high) for the Rays.

2) DFA'ing does not always mean you want nothing in return.

(Again, I'm not for this trade, but if we sign JD, it makes some sense.)

His health may have driven down the price of the Eduardo Nunez deal.

The Red Sox reportedly held workouts for Nunez in December and again in February. MassLive reports that at each workout Nunez "wasn’t 100 percent" in his return from the knee injury.

http://www.masslive.com/redsox/index.ssf/2018/02/eduardo_nunez_signs_with_red_s.html

After a third workout last week Nunez signed the deal that fell far short of the two-year, $14 million contract projected by MLB Trade Rumors:

https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/11/2017-18-top-50-mlb-free-agents-with-predictions.html

We can all hope that Nunez returns in good health.

The Sox must have felt the knee was "good enough."

The real danger is probably a re-injury.

I wonder whether the Red Sox offered Eduardo Nunez a contract after each of the first two workouts and, if so, whether the final contract was better, worse or the same as the earlier offers.

Again, I hope Nunez returns to full health.

I think that that certainly is a valid point but even though we all know that you can never have too much pitching, the Red Sox are in position to address immediate needs and trading a very young solid player who is proving to be a real hitter would be asinine considering what our pitching staff potentially looks like right now.

It seemed like destiny - the Red Sox hand just got a lot stronger in recent weeks. I'll be curious as to how the deal is structured.

Two opt outs 5 years 110 ! !!!!! Dave is amazing

The opt-outs work to the player's advantage (although the front-loaded nature of the rumored contract temporarily helps the Sox in the luxury tax calculation).

I actually think that when it comes to character in general this organization has done a very good job in general of bringing in quality people. I do continue to believe that many of the things that can't be measured are far more important than many things that can be measured. Qualities like the ability to lead, mental toughness, and character in general most often outweigh measurable statistics in my mind. I'm a fan for life but I want a team that I like as opposed to one I don't like. I really am and have always been a believer that good things generally happen more often to good people. Character counts in other words. Wins and losses just take care of themselves but I think good people tend to win more than people of questionable character. Once again, I don't think that we have one dink on this team. We have some nasty tough players but good people can certainly be nasty and tough. Obviously as I have stated before I would like to see some better leadership and fewer of what I consider to be mental mistakes but I am really looking forward to this year. One reason is because I do expect Price to be more like what we have all wanted to see and with Sale and Price leading the way, life in Boston could be very good.

As much as I love my stats, I am a big believer in the intangibles that you mention. (Though some people don't want to believe that, for some reason.) That doesn't mean that I'm going to ignore what the stats tell me, but I agree that leadership, mental toughness, etc. make a difference.

One of my biggest intangible favorites is still Varitek. I don't care what anyone says about his stats (although the studies support him), I'd take him behind the plate any day of the week.

I know that you are! I'm not an anti stat guy either.

Jarrod Dyson to sign with AZ for $7.5M/2/

That's a good deal for them ...not much pop but he can fly and create runs ,,,like there team....when's Goldy joining us ? Next year ?

I think the Hosmer deal actually helps the Sox in regards to signing JD. He signed for $20 a year with an opt out after year 5 and is over 2 years younger than JD and has been more durable. Yes JD will fetch more as he should, however if using Hosmer as a comp. I don't think he is worth WAY more. I think $25 a year over 5 years seems like it will be the TOP he will fetch. I think he signs for $23 for 5 years $115mil.

Yet another prediction by the King just about came perfectly into fruition............ALL HAIL THE KING!!!!!!!!!!!
