As a a defensively limited player with a career OPS+ of 98, Eduardo Nunez posted an OPS+ of 99 in 76 games with the San Francisco Giants last year before posting an OPS+ of 129 in 38 games with the Red Sox.

I expect Nunez, who turns 31 years old in June, to produce near his career norms. Depending on his contract, Nunez could be a wise pickup.

While Nunez is just a 98 OPS+ career batter, he's been over 100 for 3 straight years. Holt's career OPS+ is 87 (86 in 2016 and 47 in 2017).

While Nunez is not a good fielder at any position, kind of like Holt, he is better on defense than Devers at 3B and better in the OF than Holt.

UZR/150

2B

Holt 1.8

Nunez -17.5

3B

Nunez -10.5 (much better the last 2 years)

Holt -11.6

Devers -12.7

SS

Holt 12.0 (only 212 innings)

Nunez -18.3

LF

Nunez 20.8

Holt -9.5

RF

Holt 15.2

Nunez 7.0

OF

Nunez 16.8

Holt -1.5

Actually, this move likely ends the JD Martinez saga. I also think this satisfies the Hanley issue as well. For the beginning of the season, Hanley is a regular, Nunez moves to 2b and all is honkey dorey. When Pedroia returns, I think Nunez plays a lot of 3b, supplanting Devers to the DH role and relegating Hanley to platoon DH duties

So you think the man who once sign Prince Fielder as a replacement for Victor Martinez (and moved Miggy Cabrera to third to accommodate them all) is done here?

OPS+ is ballpark-adjusted.

If one prefers wRC+, Nunez has a career wRC+ of 97, with a wRC+ of 100 with the Giants last year and 133 with the Red Sox:

How about wRC+ from 2015-2017:

109 Morrison, JBJ

107 Bogey

106 Nunez, HRam

100 Moreland

88 Holt

No way.

We didn't bend over backwards to reset the luxury tax just so we could bring back Moreland and Nunez.

There's just no freakin' way DD is done.

Moreland and Nunez are minor deals.

Big splash coming soon.

Agree with this ...it's definetly an exciting time to be a Redsox fan here comes JD next!!!!

Agreed. He isn't done. And if we're being honest, it looks like he is just starting.

He certainly hasn't done anything before this to let me know he's gotten started...

Cobb and Morrison both for what Martinez will $ cost and your a much better and balanced Team

Not so sure you cna ge Cobb and Morrison for the price of Martinez. Cobb's already turned down 3 yrs $42mill...

It's not about equaling JD's cost; it's about staying under the $40M over the limit level.

We're about $8M over now. Maybe after Nunez, we'll be $15M over. That leaves about $25M

$14M x 4 for Cobb and $10M x 3 for Morrison would surely make it tight, but doable.

If we can Holt, that adds $2M. If we can pawn off HRam and save $5-8M, we'll be set up to make a mid season deal, if needed.

So if the Sox sign Nunez, who gets DFA'd?

Brentz? Marrero? Other?.

You know me, I'd say Brentz. Nunez can play the OF as well as Bryce can, but with Nunez also able to play the IF, and Marco, Quiroz and Lin as IF depth, I'm guessing Marrero bites the dust.

I wonder, if DM will be picked up b y someone.

Maybe we can work out a trade- like a 2 for one deal that includes 2 guys without options.

So why are we waiting to pull the trigger? He fits and the cost should be fair. Just do it!

I'd DFA Brentz first but it will probably be Marrero.

Of course if Martinez ever signs or the Sox get someone else, the other one (Brentz?) will get DFA'd then...

DD listened to us and has picked up Nunez on a one year deal provided he passes the physical. He solves the Pedey issue and should allow us to rid ourselves of some of the utility players. The cost is not stated but I doubt if it limits us with JDM or another scenario with a power hitter and pitcher. I think DD may be tired of waiting and ready to go in another direction.

I'd get rid of Holt.

I think he's a good candidate but I think he's less likely because he was offered arbitration and he has options left, unlike Brentz and Marrero...

We might need that $2M later.

I'd try to trade Holt and out-of-options Johnson for a marginally better pitcher.

I might then try to trade two out-of-options players, Hembree and Marrero, for a marginally better RP'er (lefty?)

That takes acre of our roster crunch and slightly improves our pitching depth.

The Sox can't trade Johnson yet. If they have an injury to a starting pitcher in spring training, he's in the opening day rotation. ..

Why would anyone trade for Holt? He struggled last year, is coming off a concussion, makes $2mill, and isn't any better than a dozen or so options still available in free agency that can be had on minor league deals.

I wouldn't trade for Marrero either. The writing on the wall is that he will be DFAd and available on a minor league deal without giving up any assets. ..

I said I'd trade Johnson & Holt for a better pitcher. That pitcher would be our 6th starter, and hopefully, he'd do better than BJ/

I guess I'm going on the possible wrong assumption that if DD thinks Holt is worth $2M, so will some other GM.

(I know I might be wrong, as I thought we overpaid for him.)

Maybe 2 from Holt, Marrero, Brentz, Swihart or Johnson. All but Holt are out of options.

I'm not saying you'd get anything substantial for either of them, but you could help fill out your AA roster. Crappy players get traded all the time. I think Marrero would be very useful to an NL team that needs a backup IF with a good glove. Holt was a 2 win player in 14 and 15. He's a good buy low candidate for a team that has room for him.
