It might be a lowball offer, but it's an excellent counter to Boras' ridiculous 7 yr, $210 mil demand.

The AAV of the rumored seven-year, $210 million demand was as close to the AAV of the MLB Trade Rumors projection of six years and $150 million as was the AAV of the rumored Red Sox offer of five years and $100 million.

If the reported demand was ridiculous, was the reported offer just as ridiculous?

I'm not so sure there is. The DBacks can't afford him as of now. Who else is there?

I'm not sure any other team would go much higher than $100M/5. Maybe Boras leaked that number (accurate or not) as a way to draw some more teams into the bidding. Maybe some teams stayed away, because they felt they needed to go higher than $125M/5 to compete.

I still think we have or will have the highest bid, and I doubt he ends up getting more than $125M/5.

We'll see.

Nobody thought EE would sign for $60M/3.

My guess is JD will sign closer to $100M/5 than $210M/7.

beat that drum beat that drum beat that drum - Arizona and Boston. I'm beginning to hope that he stays home . End of story and move on. Ain't going to be toronto.

But Boras' demand also included 2 extra years.

I pretty much agree with this.

I'm getting to that point where I'm ready to move on too, but if he signed with Boston in 2 weeks I'm sure the frustration/annoyance/whatever would go away quickly.

Be patient folks and stop it with the 'let's move on' stuff. We're going to sign him for a more reasonable price than expected and he's going to mash.

So when does this flurry of free agent signings begin?

I'm predicting a record number of hold outs this year even add the season starts. ..

Maybe the Padres, who clearly have $140million kicking around, swoop in and grab him....

Yeah, instead of sending Myers to the OF, just sign JD over Hosmer.

I've not heard their named linked to JD, though.

Did you check with Harmony first before you posted this Notin? I think he seems to have the inside track on the competition here.

If the cbs website is correct and dave offered Martinez five years at 20 million per year, then my respect level for dave just went up considerably,

Now dave needs to wait out Martinez.

Ps: in the meantime dave, please be working on signing more pitching so when Martinez returns to arizona, you can get us more pitching.

Pss: price’s elbow tear is not going to completely heal. By the end of March, it will go pop. Best to add depth now!!!!

No one is linked to JD except Boston. ..

LOL. I'm just not convinced the Red Sox have the current best offer.

Baseball is flush with money and most teams don't have Boston's long-term luxury tax issues and crowded outfield.

Everyone has permission to make fun of me if J.D. Martinez signs with the Red Sox.:)

There’s always a “mystery team” with Boras.

The team is a mystery to the media and public, but not to Scott Boras and the club that has not been publicly disclosed.

The Red Sox might have the best offer. In fact it might be the only one.

Teams just aren't rushing to hand out big deals this off-season. Maybe they're being cognizant of how many go bad. Maybe they're just cheap. Maybe they're waiting for next off-season. Or any combination.

But as of now, no one else seems to have a confirmed offer over 3 years except the extremely foolish Eric Hosmer. ..

Assuming that team actually exists...

Maybe an offer of $115M/5 with a $5M option buy out for year 6 (counts as $120M/6 on the luxury tax budget) of a $15M sixth year ($135M/6)

Sometimes good signing is that one you let it get away.....

Which raises the question, what's the difference between a 'hold out' and an unemployed person?

One has job offers and the other doesn't?

I'm sure Boras also had some mystery friends when he was younger that nobody ever met or even that mystery girlfriend from Canada in high school...

I am on board with signing more pitching. IMO, it should be the priority over signing big lumber.
