I don't necessarily think that my comment was backward at all. I still feel that if Martinez had an offer on the table that was higher than the Red Sox offer he would already be signed. I might not have stated clearly what I meant to say. My guess is that if he waits too long, there is a chance that Boston moves away from him. If that is the case, my bet is that he signs for less. I realize that this is all about business but it is starting to be a turn off for me. I don't care if he comes or not at this point.

I think we are used to seeing major signings by now, so the frustration level is getting high.

For some reason, this off season is going very slow. I'm starting to lose my strong desire to sign JD, but until the big shows begin to drop, I'm fine with waiting it out.

I just don't want us to lose out on our plan B and C before getting shut out of plan A.

$100 mill would be a true lowball offer. It would explain why JDM hasn't accepted it yet.

However, if nobody bids more, we might make out like bandits.

I was thinking $125M/5 might be the top offer, but if $100M/5 is the top offer right now, but someone else comes along with a better offer, we could offer $125M/6 or something like $105M/5 with an option for year 6 at $20M with a $5M buyout- making it $110M/5 or $125M/6 (club choice).

I highly doubt that five years and $100 million is the best offer to date and I doubt the Red Sox have made the current best offer.

I'm taking the field against the Red Sox.

It's certainly not necessarily a bad thing to have to wait like this. I am starting to wonder if there's something a little dirty going on behind all the inactivity...hopefully not.

Dombrowski recently said the Red Sox are focused on obtaining a middle-of-the-order bat by free agency or trade. That suggests they are still very much in on JDM.

I can't imagine DD even bothering to make that offer if he didn't think it was in the neighborhood of what JDM is ultimately going to sign for. It would be pointless.

Maybe not "pointless", if $100M ends up being close to the top offer.

Although the article did say 100 million there was still some reference to it possibly going as high as 135-150. We don't know for sure at all what is currently being negotiated. You taking the field against the Sox - me taking the Sox against the field but I am not sure that that is what I want to see happen.

Arizona and Boston not in that order.

I just heard a very refreshing interview with Jeremy Barflield up here and I have to say that a part of me is anxious to see what the likes of Jeremy and Bryce Brentz are capable of. Their recent numbers are prodigious. Players sometimes really are late bloomers regardless of what all the scouts say. 6'5" 240 works for me. These guys are worth a look. I realize that they are not the flavor of the day - oh well. They are hungry and they want to play and they aren't miniature versions of athletes.

Even the Red Sox might be out of the bidding.

Or the field could have many participants.:)

Yes, but if the field was larger, it's been a very well kept secret.

Usually, teams don't hide the fact that they are interested or involved in negotiations.

There could be 5 teams; there could be two teams; there could just be one with an offer much higher than anyone else, even if much higher is just $100M/5.

It might be a lowball offer, but it's an excellent counter to Boras' ridiculous 7 yr, $210 mil demand.

When Boras made his statement about the 7/$210 contract, someone really should have said:

'Hey Scott, can I have some of what you're smoking?' :D

I can't see AZ offering more than $100M/5. There was talk the Jays were interested, but I haven't heard anything concrete.

If the Sox are prepared to go as high as $125M/5 (Maybe $130M/5 as part of the option 6th year to lower the AVV), I doubt anyone will bid higher.

If they do, let's move on.

I can't believe that Dombrowski would risk losing JD by not offering more than $100 mil for 5 years if another team has offered more. This leads me to believe the very real possibility that there isn't a better offer on the table for JD.

Of course, we also don't know how accurate the report is.

If he ends up getting $125-130M/5, the Sox "low ball" offer of $100M will end up being much closer to the actual amount given that the Boras starting point.

And I am leaning towards the opposite being true.

I'm still taking the Red Sox against the field. :)

Although like many others, I'm getting to the point where I'm ready to move on from JD.

If there is a higher offer, and I agree that there may not be, I think DD will go above $100M/5.

That's EE money with 2 more years.

I'm not so sure there is. The DBacks can't afford him as of now. Who else is there?

It feels to me like a Boras leak. We would not benefit at all from leaking this. If it's from their side however, it shows the entry point is low and it might encourage teams to come in and test the water.

Suddenly the market for JD has grown considerably.

Right now, all the talk is just speculation. What is clear is that JD has not accepted any offer so they (he and Boras) are holding out for more and risking the highest offer being withdrawn, assuming there is more than one. Its a game, but high time owners and GM's rethought what reasonable offers are. It should be about value and risk assessment and not about ego and wishes.

Less than half LOL

Counter a ridiculous demand with a ridiculous offer.

Although, it could turn out that the Red Sox offer isn't that ridiculous or lowball at all.

Maybe there is some collusion going on....

I would be very surprised if Dombrowski let JD sign with another team if he could sign him for $125M/5.

Makes a lot of sense.

I absolutely agree oldtimer. I am not a fan of large contracts to superstars. I'd much rather sign the next tier type of player for a 2-3 year contract. The value, IMO, is better. At the very least, the risk is much less.
