So there is a cliff?
I never said that there wouldn’t be one, just that I don’t worry about it, and that it is too far in the future to predict. We are certainly in a window to go for it all with a possible cliff afterward. When you are built to win now, status quo doesn’t make sense.

Why? What brings you to this conclusion? Over and over again we're being told that the Sox are the highest bidder. Boras has a history of waiting until the end of January for his big FA's.

Please provide a link to a source that reports that the Red Sox are the highest bidder.

Find me a source that says they aren't. Actually, find me a source of which specific team has made an offer to JD aside from the Sox,

No, but you have said that it is a myth and that it's existence cannot be proved. It's in your signature.

Unlike hot streaks and clutch, the “Cliff” is a myth. It can’t be defined, and it’s future existence cannot be proved.

You'll understand if people fine it difficult to understand when you find the cliff a myth and yet feel that we need to make signings now to be able to win before the possible cliff comes.

nnnnnnnoooooooo Hitch - don't go there!!!!! lololololol

It' soooooooo bloody slow this winter! We need something to continue to argue over. :D

I'm not a betting person but in the J.D. Martinez sweepstakes I might bet on the field over the Red Sox signing the reputed top free agent hitter.

Thoughts?

Thoughts?

I'll always take the field over any one team in a bet. It's a sucker's bet not to. I'll lose once in a while (Alabama, anyone? :)) but I'll win more often than I'll lose.

I have two thoughts.

1) You are in fact making a bet.

2) You're goin' down!

Wouldn't everyone rather have a great shot at a ring in the next two years than maybe a shot 5-9 years from now?

what are the chances he doesnt think hes a fit for boston? he seems soft spoken and even shy

Sure. That's got nothing to do with my point, however.

I don't want us to stand still.

Why would JD want to sign with us? We have three talented outfielders that are all younger than him and better defenders than him.

We have a dh that we can not trade. We just signed a first baseman.

If I am JD, I want to go to a team that has a spot for me, preferably in the outfield.

Let JD sign elsewhere. We need more pitching!!!!!!

Because he starts in front of the DH every single day of the week. He will play constantly and get paid very well to do it. He would have a shot at a ring.

There some fairly obvious reasons to come here.

I guess that you don’t have a sarcasm detector.

I don't agree with what you're saying here. IMO, Boras would make a statement like this in order to get the Sox to increase its offer.

By more than what they might have increased it anyways to try and top SF to get JD as a DH?

Make him a DH and there is a higher chance he stays healthy.

True, but much of JD's low PA seasons were a result of him not being FT until rather late in his career- not injuries.

If I can jump in here, there are degrees of bad contracts, so I think you sort of have to be a little more specific. Some are a little bad and some are monster albatrosses.

JD for 5/130 would probably be a little bad.

JD for 7/210 would be albatross bad.

I realize that there are different degrees of bad contracts. I am on record here that I am okay with signing JD to a 5/130 contract or even a little more dollar wise.

I think everyone here would pass on the 7/210 contract.

The statement that 'staying status quo is irrational' implies to me that the team should take on the albatross contract rather than staying status quo. My point is that there are times when staying status quo is a better option than not maintaining status quo. In other words, the statement that 'staying status quo is irrational' is irrational.

Posted
Again with the false choice. The team was not Championship quality last year and status quo will not convert them into one. They need a big bat.

So, you are in favor of handing out albatross contracts to avoid staying status quo.

Just say it with me: "You are right Kimmi."

I would rather have a legitimate shot every year.

Well, not knowing whether they would have increased it anyway, it's hard to say, but yes, it makes sense to me.

i would like to see the players union start a website to list free agents and have bids for them like ebay.all out in the open and no agents drama.the union reps and lawyers could help players through the process and the players could save 10% on top of it.theres probably a good reason this hasnt happened but right now i dont know of one.

MLB Trade Rumors have not even speculated at any other teams that could be involved in JD bidding for quite a while. The Sox have a 5 year offer on the table. "There is word" that another 5 year offer exists, but it's most likely from the Mystery Team from Unknown Parts that Boras seems to deal with every offseason since it hasn't been attached to any team as of yet. Therefore, the Sox have the highest offer on the table.

So if there isn't an injury risk and he was just a late bloomer a la Bautista, I see no problem with the signing.

I believe they can go for it now and still have a legitimate shot every year (at least as legitimate of a shot as 2014 - 2015) because I believe they can re-sign everyone they want to.

Every player would receive a boiler plate contract then? No free jet usage for ARod? No no-trade clauses or anything?

teams would submit offers with all that in it or use them things to sweeten deals just like now
