Does it hurt that Stanton went to the Yankees? Yes

Did he want to come here? No

Did DD make a push for him in Boston? Maybe some reports we may never know the truth

With him and Judge in the Lineup together that's a lot of power, but Judge strikes out a ton and Stanton has proven that he is hurt a ton.

I think if we keep to core intact and Sign JD and Hosmer or make a trade for Machado and leave Hosmer out will are still in the catbird seat in the AL East. Our pitching is light years better than the Yanks and if we have Erod, Price, and Porcello back to 2016 form and Sale being Sale then one 5th starter is a must. That's a lot to fall into place and a lot of health but it is possible. If we sign Nunez that's just a plus til Peedy gets back then he turns into a super utility guy.

My best case is

Sign JD to DH

Sign Logan Morrison 1B

Sign Jake Arrieta

Save on 1B money and put it into other areas, let Hanley and Morrison Platoon and if they can get Nunez for cheap then so be it.

Zack Cozart to the Angels 3 Years /38 Millions

Reasonable contract. Cozart had a career year just at the right time. Funny how it's always a career year just at the right moment for lots of them.

MLBTR reports...

The Pirates and Yankees are discussing a trade that would send right-hander Gerrit Cole to the Bronx Bombers in exchange for a trade package that includes outfielder Clint Frazier, George A. King III of the New York Post reports.

Unreal. Must be nice having a nice farm in this day and age.

Cole has some durability issues - but unlike the Marlins, the Pirates are at least going to try to get some actual players for him.

They got his age 33-35 seasons. Yuck.

Angels are trying to win the offseason like the Blue Jays did a few seasons ago. Seems like an 86 win team should be coming down the pike in LAA.

Or when the Red Sox won the 2014-15 offseason by signing Pablo Sandoval, Hanley Ramirez and Justin Masterson while trading for Rick Porcello and Wade Miley.

GMs do not look at just the most recent year numbers. Here are Cole's ERA- over recent years:

100 in 2017

95 in 2016

68 in 2015

He has the 16th best SP'er WAR over 3 years at 11.1 (tied with Keuchel and ahead of Cueto, Syndergaard & Tanaka)

15th in FIP at 3.35

He placed 32nd in ERA- at 86

While you have to look at performance in past years as well, I am not convinced that Cole will be significantly better in the ALE than he was last year. Furthermore, its not a done deal yet.

I'd take Cole over any of our starters except Sale.

His cost is low.

His talent is good.

He's healthy.

Thank you for pointing that out. We Sox fans had almost forgotten about those three signings.

It's my understanding from what I have read that not much will change for the Angels while Socia is around.

I would guess that any team is capable of making mistakes. The Sox mistakes are very noticeable because they have been very expensive and they last a while.

Have to keep reminding ourselves he's a Mariners fan, and therefore has some just cause for bitterness.

And yet some people bitch about Jacko being a Yankee troll.

You can have him then. He is behind Sale, Pomeranz (career ERA+ at 117, last season 137), and Price if healthy (career ERA+ 124, injured last season). If all of those guys are healthy Cole (career ERA+:111) is my #4 SP.

Pomeranz is 2 years older, had one year of control left and has posted 6 less WAR than Cole over his career. Cole has also reached the 200IP plateau twice, something that Pomeranz has yet to accomplish. Cole doesn't have the career chops that Price does, but is Price the guy he was 5 years ago or is he the broken down converted reliever who couldn't throw more than a month's worth of starters innings before his elbow barked at him? While Boras is saying JD wouldn't mind DH'ing, Martinez is sending out feelers letting it be known that he wants to play defense. I think DD played this one right on the money. JD lost the Cardinals and the Yankees (even though they weren't big, but Boras could at least try to play them up) and while the Giants are "clearing salary", I doubt they can outbid Boston and probably shouldn't as they need a rebuild badly. JD might find himself between a short money deal staying in the NL or a big money deal DH'ing in Boston

Reread my post. I said that if all those guys are healthy then Cole, based on his career performance, is my #4 SP.

Who among those guys has the lowest career ERA+?

With the talk of signing both Hosmer and JDM anyone think the sox will try and unload Ramirez and or Porcello?

Yanks dumped Headley, anyone know if SD took on all the money?

Posted
SD took on all the money, but also got a guy who is going to end up in their rotation in Mitchell. Plus, Headley was a 2+ WAR guy with his defense and OBP factored in on a one year deal that was reasonable. Porcello has 2 yrs $42 mil remaining and Hanley has 1 yr $22 mil remaining. That's considerably more money and both of those players had either replacement level or sub replacement level production in 2017

I don't really recall feeling like we "won the offseason" that year...we expected Hanley and Pablo to give a boost to our offense, but there was a lot of skepticism about those signings as well, and there was plenty of apprehension about fielding what was seen as a rotation of #3-5 starters.

Certainly, no one was saying "Hell yeah, we got Justin Masterson - start printing those World Series tickets!"

You’re cherry picking stats. A minuscule ERA+ difference from a guy who can’t give innings doesn’t help your ball club.

Great analysis. So you are going to postulate an injury to one of the Sox starters as proof that Cole is a better pitcher? Two can play at that game. Lets say Cole gets injured and can only pitch 100 innings this year and Porcello has a rebound year with an ERA under 4. Cole isn't even my number 4 SP any more.

I deal in what is real performance by historical data; you deal in what might be.

If all the pitchers mentioned are healthy, Cole is my number 4 SP this year.

My prediction of shiny new toys in time for Christmas at Fenway and the first day of 2018 ticket sales has gone down the toilet as will the ticket sales tomorrow.

I think many of us are surprised that DD has done nothing so far. Disappointed is more like it.
