1- Sox sign Martinez. 2- Folks on here scream that we overpaid. Curse out Boras . 3 - Martinez out homers Stanton in 2018. 4 - Folks here scream about the future. Curse out Dombrowski. And so it goes.

lol lol lol - good good good one.

Since he probably is smart enough to know that he can't win on the forum boards, I'm really ok with the fact that he doesn't have to tell us everything that he thinks, is doing , and will do.

Those of us who want JD know it will take a gross overpay to get him.

His contract and pay will likely be a bigger issue in 2-4 years.

I'm okay with $135M/5 or $150M/6.

Is your point the obvious one, or are you possibly suggesting something else?

The difference in value between the No. 1 and No. 10 free agents in any year's class is not as great as many fans believe.

The winners in the sweepstakes for the top free agent are often the clubs that finish second, third and below because the team that lands that player typically overpays.

With advanced metrics many teams can nearly agree on a free agent's value. The top free agent signs with the team that is willing to overpay.

How could you POSSIBLY infer that Harmony had meant something other than that? LOL

Harmony participating in Red Sox hot stove discussions is like having the Grinch at a Christmas party.

LOL.

I find harmony entertaining. He's very consistent with his criteria and offers an outsider's view on suggested trades and signings.

He may not be the life of the party, but I'd pass a doobie to him, errrr, I mean .... offer him a beer.

He may cherry-pick the sample size, but he always uses WAR and projected WAR- nothing else.

I'd go out to socialize but I'm afraid I would decline the offer of a doobie and a beer. I don't drink (with the brief exception of two glasses of wine last holiday season on a bicycle tour of vineyards in Chile).

I refuse to smoke anything since kicking a two-pack-a-day cigarette habit 28 years ago. However, living in a state that has legalized recreational marijuana, I've become edible curious. Nevertheless, I have resisted the temptation to patronize my neighborhood cannabis dispensary.:)

I don't drink anymore either.

I smoked cigs back in my early 20's but not since. I used to toke a lot, but now only on my summer trips to Maine.

BTW, a longtime friend and co-worker of mine shared these spectacular videos of the chapels of Notre Dame:

A bicycle tour of vineyards in Chile ? What ?

I find it refreshing that dave is playing the Long game this offseason.

But I get the feeling that dave does not have the analytics dept to get him the data he needs to figure out best fits for us. All our talented youngsters left when dave entered the building.

Sadly our front office is reduced to old geezers like dave and larussa, who know more about changing their depends diapers than turned my on a computer.

It was a day trip when my older daughter was studying abroad in Chile. I joke that I limit my alcohol consumption to the Southern Hemisphere. My younger daughter hopes to study abroad this summer in South Africa and Zambia (but I doubt I can afford another trip).:)

Well when the Red Sox signed JD Drew it worked out pretty well for us.

And when the Red Sox signed Victor Martinez he played great in Boston as well.

Add it all up and signing free agent JD Martinez should be a guaranteed awesome signing for us!!

Projected WAR... Oh, see, we've identified the problem. :)

When someone offers an opinion on a proposed signing or trade, that person at least implicitly is making a projection on player performance.

By using projected WAR I am being transparent on what I base my projection. Many posters are not that transparent.:)

I dislike projected WAR, too, but at least harmony doesn't cherry pick his stat choice to suit his position. He does, at times, cherry pick the sample size time period or neglects to take context into account.

The analytics staff is still there (yes a lot of them left) ... Cora was hired partially because of analytics

Harm , Excellent. Sounds like you have an interesting life. Enjoy.

Dec 13th and no hard news as yet. It isn't imperitive, but would certainly be comforting to see the Sox get their big bat by the end of the winter meetings. This is a case where no news is not the same as good news.

Yeah yeah.. it was meant to be more of a knock on Projected WAR than a knock on you Harmony. Cheers and Happy Holidays:)

I can see the interest. I can also see why the O's would like to get something nice out of a trade than otherwise wait until he's a FA and get what a compensation pick? when he's signs with another team a year from now??? My question is what we'd have to trade for a season of Machado and would it even be worth it. Sometimes teams, in my opinion, get a little greedy and unrealistic. One season isn't much to work with. There's a chance he wouldn't sign an extension anyway. Plus, in his case, it sounds like he doesn't want to play 3B anymore- which wouldn't help us. Would Donaldson make more sense? I've no idea what his contract looks like though, I'd have to look it up.
