Sign Otani, Sign Martinez, resign Moreland or if you really want to go all in sign Hosmer as well.

I think the pitching will be elite next year. I think a clean bill of health and sophomore Benintendi + Devers will make the offense better. Adding Martinez I think can put us over the top.

JD Martinez yup

Hosmer no. Go with Santana

I'm ok with Santana if the price is right, but if you're going all in I'd take Hosmer whose just as good with 4 years younger.

I'll be ripping mad, if they sign Hosmer.

I wouldn't sign him to one year.

After waiting all summer for this team to wake up and start hitting, I don't think I want to watch a repeat of that again.

I like the JD Martinez option, Stanton, not so much.

Will everyone like Martinez when he is getting paid over $120mill through age 37? I bet he gets close to that.

The biggest issue with Stanton is if you think about, he's very, very likely to wind up on the Dodgers...

I don't get why Hosmer is so desired by Sox fans.

He does not offer much of what this team needs.

Waste of money.

Exactly.

How much better would Hosmer be over Sam Travis?

He is a known quantity and plays good D I guess.

True.

H'ed probably outhit Travis, bur both lackl the very commodity the Sox could really use.

So what position do you have Martinez playing?

Since Martinez played a total of 2 games at 1st, in his Major and Minor career, we'll sign him for big bucks, (Diamondbacks will have a say), and move him to an entirely new position, so we can mess him all up.

Getting Abreu would be a great move, in my opinion.

Martinez and Abreu changes dynamic of this line-up, Abreu very affordable too.

Martinez 45 Hrs 104 rbi's .303 avg.

Abreu 33 Hrs 102 rbi's .304 avg.

Power and good hitters.

You sign Martinez you put him in Outfield, otherwise it's counter-productive. You want to ease him in in certain game situations, that's a different story.

Hosmer will cost too much, KC wants him back, need money in other areas. I wanted Hosmer too, but not feasible. A simple Trade like Abreu, is better move. KC will give QO to Hosmer, so it starts at 17.4 m.

Moreland used Fenway to get better deal, so next contract for him will be his nest-egg. More years more money. I think he goes to Cleveland, and they let Santana walk, after they give him QO.

Hosmer would be a significant upgrade over Travis.

Interesting that this was the take away from my post. My preference would be to sign Martinez and Otani. Hosmer is brought up because he plays 1st base, he's one of the best hitters on the market, and he plays a position the Sox have a hole at and could use an upgrade when they desparetely need an upgrade on the offense.

Can this move be criticized? absolutely, but to those throwing stones, let us hear your plans to upgrade this team?

In terms of where Martinez plays, I wouldn't be opposed to giving him a 1B glove, depending on how far down the rabbit hole we want to go I wouldn't oppose seeing him in LF and using Benintendi as part of a package to upgrade another position. I'd also be fine with him being a 4thoufielder/DH hybrid, he could upgrade the offense, fill in youngs role and open up a roster spot for one more out of the Marrero/Hernandez/Holt/Lin clan which will go a long way with Pedey's situation up in the air.

People do realize we have almost no trade chips at this point. If we want to get an impactful MLB player we are giving up another one. Which I'm not opposed to, but I still view this as somewhat of a sizeways move in the absence of making some FA signings.

No to Hosmer...for the money, I'd rather re-sign Moreland and keep the draft pick.

I wouldn't sign Hosmer, even if there was no lost draft pick attached.

I would not sign Hosmer to more than one year, which means, no chance. We may need to move Devers to 1B as early as mid 2018 or 2019.

DH and then hope and pray HRam and Travis can cover 1B adequately or sign Duda to platoon with HRam. He'd be much cheaper and shorter than the Hoze.

If we're calling Hosmer "one of the top hitters on the market", it must be based on just 2017.

If that's the criteria, then just sign Morrison to 1-2 years at half the cost.

I figured the free agent market was implied.

1B wRC+ Since 2014

Selected players

161 Votto

139 Abreu

124 Duda (awesome vs RHPs and much cheaper)

120 Santana

116 Hosmer

113 HRam

111 Alvarez

110 C Carter

109 Morrison

109 Valencia

If we platoon HRam at 1B vs LHPs, we can look at 1B numbers vs just RHPs since 2014 (Only players who are considered platoon-types are listed. For example, Votto is not going to be platooned):

135 Duda

129 Lind

(129 Hosmer)

115 Morrison

112 Alonso

110 HRam

102 Moreland

2016-2017 only (vs RHPs)

135 Hosmer

134 Santana

123 Abreu

121 Duda

121 Morrison

115 Alonso

106 HRam

92 Moreland

One factor that I haven't seen much discussion about is that Hanley's $22 million option for 2019 will vest if he reaches 497 plate appearances next season - something that Dave should be thinking about how to avoid, IMO. We should probably come into ST prepared with a few different 1B/DH candidates and force Hanley to earn playing time.

I'd be fine with something like Martinez primarily DHing and occasionally getting a start in the outfield to give one of the B's a rest, while Moreland and Ramirez split time at 1st, with Hanley DHing when JD is not. (Moreland basically had a typical Moreland season, neither better nor worse, so I'm not sure he could command a much bigger contract than he did last winter, particularly in a rather crowded market for 1B. If he can be signed for a similar amount, I'd welcome him back.) Travis and Swihart could be other candidates.

Posted

I'm all for avoiding Hanley's option, but you mine as well pay him to play elsewhere if you do that. I'm not sure I want him in the clubhouse if he knows he's sitting the bench and losing out on 20 million next year.

I mean, if he's a team player, this is what I would actually prefer. Hanley/Moreland platoon at first, with Martinez DH/OF

If Moreland is too expensive perhaps Shaw can platoon with Hanley as well.

It's not a matter of Hanley being a team player or not, he has to play well to get paid the following year by his new team. If he slacks off and hits .232 then he'll be paid accordingly in his next contract. Or not be signed at all, because who wants a DH who hits .232??

This is what the best and brightest of TS is saying these days.

The same ones who don't endlessly dump on Pedroia?

The cost in talent would worry me more than Stanton's contract (which really isn't terribly unreasonable).

Pick up some SP depth and the obligatory reliever or two, re-sign Nunez (maybe a necessity if Pedroia is going to need surgery and miss significant time), steal Ohtani if you can, and BRING ME JD MARTINEZ... then call it a winter.

Otani is getting ankle surgery. I would be reluctant to sign him. But Stanton interests me very much.

He's very up and down and is not a very good fielder.

A four year deal locks Devers into 3B or DH.

I'd punt by signing someone to a one year deal and see how Devers looks at 3B.

1Bmen available for 2019:

Marwin Gonzalez

Justin Smoak

Matt Adams

Joe Mauer

plus anyone who signs a one-year deal this year.

We may sign Machado next winter and move Devers to 1B for 2019.

The only thing that doesn't interest me about Stanton is that nasty little opt-out. If he could be talked out of that I'd trade Beni for Stanton and throw in whomever we have in the minors that isn't in our immediate plans. We take on the salary (dump) and the M's get a blue chip young player to rebuild around. Win/win. But unless he can be talked out of the opt-out I have no interest in giving up any quality players for him since he then becomes essentially a rental.

Just f***ing NO!!

I was going to post this in the Pedey thread but it may fit just as well here.

I've been trying to figure out why all the hate for Pedey on this board. I'm unhappy about "It's not me, it's them", but that's something that has to be handled within the clubhouse. If it has affected the clubhouse atmosphere that's one thing but AFAIK there's no evidence that's happened. There's as good a chance it was settled internally as not.

So then we come to Pedey's lack of production and lost time. Some of that is due to his style of play, and deep down we knew that would happen, but some of it is also due to that cheap shot Machado put on Pedey's already questionable knee. Am I really the only one who recognizes the impact that had on this year's team as well as Pedey's future???? And some posters actually want to sign this guy????

I have NO interest under any circumstances of Machado ever cashing a check from the Boston Red Sox. In fact, I'm hoping he gets beaten and raped by a gang of homeless people and left for dead in an alley. Karma's a bitch.

So, I am guessing that you have no interest in Machado. LOL!
