Farrell is still playing it a little conservatively with the pen. He probably could have used Reed, but what effect might that have at the end of September/October? It's not quite do or die time yet. Being a little conservative right now is probably the right call.

i am 100% OK with being conservative when tied or down by a run late in the game. a 1 run lead in the 8th inning you have to go for the jugular and win that game. use your best horses so to speak. going Barnes & Hembree was a terrible move by JF. workman hadnt given up a run in a million innings straight. workman should have pitched the 8th. or maybe it's time we go to Kelly as the 8th inning guy? and let the rest of the shmucks get us thru the 7th.....

Was he saving Reed for Fister's game?

We were up one vs a top contender. What's the chances Fister's game will create a better chance to use our best RP'ers?

I personally would have preferred Reed and Kimbrel in the game as well, and worried about who will close today's game if the situation arises. But I can certainly understand Farrell being conservative, and I think being a little conservative now probably is the right call.

Valid arguments can be made both ways. I'm certainly not going to crucify Farrell for that decision.

Reed had pitched on the 16th, 18th and 20th, throwing a total of 57 pitches. So let's rip Farrell for not wanting to Scott Proctor the guy!

I'm fine with ripping into Farrell, but his bullpen use has been ok to me. You can't throw the same 3 guys out there everytime there is a lead. You just can't. Sometimes, the secondary options need to step up.

I'm not sure I follow you, specifically on identifying who exactly the "best horses" are for the late innings.

Kimbrel, absolutely. Did you want to bring him him to pitch the 8th and 9th innings the night after finishing against the Yankees?

As for Reed, his ERA with the Sox is 5.63. Last four games were great, but the one before that cost us a game. Plus he pitched Sunday and 1.2 innings the Friday before that.

Why mention Kelly for the 8th when we needed him to finish the 6th and all of the 7th? You appear to have promoted him out of the "shmucks" so maybe you have forgotten that, before last night and Saturday, Kelly gave up 3 runs, 1 run, and 1 run in the three games prior.

And how can you be so sure Workman was the best choice for the 8th when he gave up the leadoff double in the 9th?

My take on what happened last night is that Cleveland had the better bullpen, simple as that and despite the fact that one of their best, Miller, had to leave the game after giving up the walk.

Why no mention of Scott who stopped the bleeding in the 8th? I'll tell you why--because he did a good job and that does fit into your neat scenario that once again Farrell is clueless in Cleveland.

Fair enough. Point well taken.

Our pen- on paper- (pun intended) looked awful before the year started.

Kudos to everyone, including JF for getting the most out of our pen so far this year. Injuries to Smith, Thornburg and Ross might have devastated other pens, but our has significantly over performed for 4 months. Props to JF and the players.

ummm...ok. let me try....

1. while this inning was happening i literally typed something to the effect of the save for this game is the 8th inning not the 9th. i would have 100% gone to kimbrel in the 8th. especially after the leadoff walk.

two. i never advocated for reed. in fact i am on record saying he should pitch in low leverage situations until he proves otherwise.

III. i have always advocated for kelly. i will take the 100+ mph for the 8th inning everytime. errytime. i would rather take the "chance" of one of the other guys in the 7th and save (see what i did there?) kelly for the 8th. once kelly was used up...see point #1.

FORE: Workman previous 17 innings he gave up a total of 0 earned runs. i would prefer him in the 8th versus barnes. actually i would have preferred workman in the 6th and 7th. see points III & 1.

V: i do not believe Cleveland's BP was the difference. it was the mismanagement of our BP that cost us the W.

666: Scott did a great job. actually he would have been perfect to go to in the 9th after points FORE, III, and 1.

your move.

How many times does this kid have to airmail throws home when the play was not at the plate before he wises up? This is at least the third one that I can remember.

Nah. This is unfair.

After all stats show that Beni is almost as good as Gardner!!!!

Where are all those Holt defenders from earlier this evening?

He made an error.

Indisputable evidence that he is just awful and should be removed from the roster.

A year ago, I was sreaming to put Mookie in the 3 spot. Now I'm screamimg to put him back leading off. His SO-Walk rario is now 59-59. No one else comes close. I guess I'm finally convinced that he not goig to quit taking strike one (often times down the middle)

I am hearing that he is already a better fielder than Yaz. Today is Yaz's 78th birthday, he could probably still play the wall better than Benintendi.

If someone said Benni is anywhere near as adept in LF as Yaz let alone better than Yaz that person needs to be heavily medicated and institutionalized immediately.

Unless, of course, it's Dojji.

He gets a pass for saying some absurd s*** because of his hits on Nava and Napoli.
