Could 50 cent, Usain Bolt or others, make impact for the Red Sox in playoffs?

Here is something I've always wondered about the game of baseball that could be used around playoff time. Why don't we think outside the box. In the playoffs we don't really need those 4 bench spots, why not use them for guys who could make an impact - sign guys from different sports or maybe even the music industry to make an impact. Imagine, late in a game, mitch moreland walks, what if we bring in John Wall or Usain Bolt to pinch run? That is game changing speed, and I'm sure one of those guys could learn how to steal bases correctly if they put the time in. Maybe not John Wall because he's busy with basketball, but possibly like Jeff Demps (Track runner, former NFL RB, US Olympian), or someone of that nature. There is speed out there that could be used to our advantage, world record speed.

Or with 50 cent. He's a gangster, so what if say a team was being a dick, 50 cent could attack them off the field and send them a message. It would be intimidating to have his presence in the dugout starring at the man he attacked.

There is a lot of unexplored opportunities that could serve as a better purpose than carrying Brock Holt on the playoff roster. I think DD needs to dig deep and find a big advantage like this.

Charlie Finley would like this post. But look up Herb Washington. Suffice to say the idea didn't work very well.

I was not sure his name was Washington but I remember his white cleats and that he was black.

this is my new favorite thread.

50 cent on the bench is pure gold. maybe even platinum. f***ing stpehcurry. always finds a way to fit that weiner in. dude kills it.

Charley Finley did this with a sprinter on the As.

I don't think it was more than a PR move.

Herb Washington didn't work out as a pinch runner with amazing speed. But he remains the only player in MLB history to appear in 100 games without ever batting,, fielding, or pitching. Also he's the only player ever to have his position listed as "PR" on his Topps baseball card.

I believe former Blue Jay outfielder Junior Felix was also a track runner who was recruited for his speed. But he was clearly more athletic and had more baseball skills than Washington. Also that story could be completely false...

RE: Junior Felix

MIAMI — When the Florida Marlins picked Junior Felix from the California Angels in the recent expansion draft, they were led to believe that he would turn 25 in October. That, after all, is the age at which he is listed in baseball's official record books.

Now, however, they're discovering that their "young" right-fielder is at least 30, and maybe even as old as 35.

The club asked Felix about the fact that his hair had turned predominantly gray. He was listed at 24, but he told them that his family had a history of graying prematurely.

"We're aware that Junior probably is older than the records say," Marlin General Manager Dave Dombrowski said. "But it's not a big ordeal for us. We're going to live with it. He's our right fielder."

Seems Junior was actually more like Senior.

My favorite part about googling Herb Washington

"In 1974, Washington was tapped by Oakland A's owner Charlie Finley to become the team's "designated runner". Finley and Washington worked out a one-year $45,000 contract with a $20,000 signing bonus. The contract had an unusual clause requiring Washington to grow facial hair before the beginning of the season. Washington had difficulty growing a full mustache, so he used an eyebrow pencil to simulate full facial hair.[1]"

Also, this thread is one of the greatest ever created.

That was basically the title of the article. Turns Out Felix Isn't So Junior

I could never root for a team with 50 cent on it. His name has bugged me since the first time I heard it.

It's 50 cents, plural. Not 50 cent. One cent. 50 cents.

OK, end of OCD rant.

His first name is 50. His second name is Cent. There's only one of him, so it's singular.

Mike Marshall picked him off first base. After that, he wouldn't take a lead. Just stayed on the bag.

0 PA

31 SB

17 CS

Bad SB% (74.6%) for someone hired only to steal bases.

Yeah, get one of the midget wrestlers from the WWF. 95% chance he walks. Just hope the F...he doesn't get drilled in the ribs..

You're talking about Herb Washington. And I do think it was more than a PR move. Finley was a mad scientist type, he liked to try things. Sometimes they worked, a lot of times they didn't, but until you try a thing you never truly know if it's gonna work or not.

That has been done too. Bill Veeck hired the height challenged Eddie Gaedel as a pinch hitter. MLB outlawed it. I wonder if that would hold up today?

Dombrowski won a ring with the Marlins in 1997.

I imagine it would, unless you could demonstrate that the guy was athletic enough to play professional baseball.

Even if the idea held some merit, the player(s) would have to be on the roster by Sept 1st to be eligible for the playoff roster.

Never going to happen.

^^ if brock holt got "injured" in September, we could sign usain bolt and use him as pinch runner. we did something similar a few years ago to get joey gathright on playoff roster

Yeah he was a true man of ideas.

Good ones too. Like Day Glo baseballs, white shoes, and handlebar mustaches.

These were not marketing ideas, they were clearly Innovations that made today's game better.

I get it.

One more thing. I was alive and watching all this happen while you were still dead and had no idea what baseball was.

or honestly whats Quintin berry up to? he was a nice little asset of the bench.

Or Dave Roberts.

I wonder where Gathright is and what he is doing?

Probably a street performer eaking out a living jumping over Beemers.

No way. This idea makes no Cents.
