Why would we want to add Verlander now...he's having a poor season and deep into decline years.

Plus, haven't you heard?

It's predetermined that Price will suck int he playoffs.

Verlander is 7-5 3.39.

He's actually doing better, of late (8 ERs in his last 4 starts), and he's under team control for less years than Price.

Price: $127M/5 (after this year)

Verlander: $56M/2

Of course, we could maybe trade Price and add someone else (Cueto, Gray...?)

Does price opt out after next season if he is still with us then?

Do you think Price is tradable with his hefty contract?

100%

I am not so sure about that.

Even if he is completely miserable in Boston do you think he is stupid enough to walk away from all that guaranteed money at his age?

How many teams would be willing to spend that much or more with inflation to sign him even if he is an ace?

At this point any move needs to be geared towards maximizing our window of opportunity. Prying Justin Bour away from the Marlins would give us a power-hitting 1B under team control through the 2020 season, but the price would obviously be high.

Might Travis, Chavis, Groome, and another lower level piece be enough to land Bour and, say, AJ Ramos?

He believes he'll get more guaranteed years if he opts out.

Chavis AND Groome? Crazy talk.

I am really starting to think that Price will opt out regardless of how he is pitching. He might (likely) have to take a cut in salary, but he seems really miserable here in this fan and media frenzied city. A lot can happen between now and the end of 2018, but if things continue like they have been for Price, I think he's gone.

Crazy from which side?

Justin Bour offers three-plus years of a power-hitting first baseman who this year has posted an fWAR higher than all but three Red Sox hitters (Mookie Betts, Xander Bogaerts and Dustin Pedroia, with Jackie Bradley and Bour tied at 1.8 fWAR).

A.J. Ramos offers one-plus years of a veteran reliever who is one year removed from posting an fWAR higher than Craig Kimbrel.

Jason Groome and Michael Chavis are distant prospects ranked No. 87 and No. 96 in Baseball America's midseason rankings:

We need a f... veteran power bat. That will change everything with this team. I have no problem trading Groome for the right guy....

Sure, but what's Groome worth in a trade? Right now his trade value is based more on his high school career and draft position than his whopping 16IP in the minors...

It depends on how much meth we throw in with him.

Delusional Dave is continuing to operate without a plan and just pissed away two prospects for a rental player that provides no power or leadership.

Can we please send Dave to the nearest dumpster?

I'm a "cliff dweller", but I agree.

This was not trading away the future.

Nunez and Devers make this team much better, without giving up anything. Anderson may be a bullpen arm one day and Santos is a teenager repeating the DSL. Those guys aren't likely part of your future and if they were they were more likely going to be complimentary pieces.

Now if the Sox could upgrade 1B, I'd feel really really really really good about this team going forward.

I agree. But how can they significantly upgrade at 1st without going over the cap? Can they trade enough off the 25 man to negate the addition of a big ticket power hitting 1st baseman? Does DD even think about this? I kind of doubt that it is being considered seriously at this point. But of course I could be very wrong.

I was just watching videos of Nunez running the bases.

Holy s*** that guy is fast.

I don't really know how and where he will play even though I have read so much about him. I guess I'll just have to see what Johnny Neuron decides to do.

In any case I am now reasonably optimistic that Nunez can help this team.

By the way, I have always loved speed on the base paths since I saw Curt Flood and Lou Brock in the 1967 series.

Now I will sit back and wait to be told how speed does not really matter all that much.

Nobody "predetermined" it, Moon.

Neither Price, Porcello or Pomeranz inspire any confidence in me, as far as the playoffs go.

If you think this rotation will mow down the Guardians, unlike last year, good for you.

I'm about halfway between you and moon on this one. I don't think Price is a choking dog who is guaranteed to suck if we make the playoffs. But his playoff record is a big concern to me. For one thing, if we make it there you know there will be a million stories to the tune of 'Will Price Choke Again?'. It's a form of negative baggage.

Yup, and we all know how well he handles criticism about his postseason performances.

I'd probably be more confident in Price, if he was a little more consistent.

He's already demonstrated this year that he's capable of throwing a stinker.

Even though Sale has never pitched in the postseason, it's a safe bet that we'll get a quality start from him, even if he's not at his best.

If Price is off, you'll get a game like his last one against the Angels, or his game against the Yankees.

I think a team like Houston will light him up.

Speed is good. Getting on base is better. These were two of my favorites growing up.

Well I was going to suggest Bour, but he's out of the picture now. Could Alonso still be in play? The A's would probably want young pieces for Alonso that wouldn't involve taking anyone off the 25 man. $2 million isn't a lot to swallow and I'm not sure it puts us over the cap but it's small enough to be managable in some way.

I'm feeling a little better with Devers up, but I think another bat could really put us over the top. This team is good, and it seems almost every game we lose is only by a run or two. The extra hitting will make the pitching shine that much better.

Like the Sox, the Guardians have also not been living up to expectations. Outside of the Astros, the AL doesn't have much that you KNOW is even going to be in the post-season. ...

The Guardians pitching hasn't been that great, but their offense has been good.

I doubt that the Sox pitching staff is going to face many Guardians pitchers.

I am not a Dave fan, but this move is nothing to send him packing over.
