The Red Sox haven't been linked to him (as far as I know) but I like the idea of trading for Alex Avila. He would replace S.Leon, who is pretty useless anyway. Avila would represent a significant offensive upgrade at catcher (currently has a 150 OPS+ whereas Leon has a 77 OPS+). There is a lot of debate concerning the defensive value of catchers. Avila has a .2 dWAR whereas Leon has a .8 dWAR. Leon doesn't do anything very well--he can't hit and isn't an exceptional defensive player--he is basically playing at a replacement level. Vazquez is pretty dreadful too. The catcher position is the Red Sox black hole that no one talks about.

Becaause defense and handling of the staff matter way more than a hundred-fifty points added to our catcher OPS, assuming Avila keep hitting like he has this year and not like other recent years.

I'm very happy with our current catchers and their .663 combined OPS (78 OPS+).

Problem is, Leon's defense isn't all that great, and since he can't hit, he is pretty useless. If Leon could play strong defense, he would be worth keeping.

Defense, to me, involves how you get the most out of each pitcher on your staff. It also involves pitch-framing and other hard-to-measure aspects of catching.

Leon has generally been regarded as a better than average defensive catcher.

I'm not that big a fan of Leon or Vazquez's, but I sure like the team ERA--3d best in MLB and best in the AL. So you could well be right--whatever those two are doing, it ain't hurting the pitching staff. Except for Fister of course. He has great stuff and I was delighted when he started yesterday, but Leon just called all the wrong pitches and wasn't framing the ball right.

Yes, those are hard to measure. What is not so hard to measure is OPS, WAR etc. We have a problem offensively, and unless a new infusion of talent at 3B, our major problem, is found, we will need to address it in other ways-and adding Avila would be a very good way to deal with it. Our catchers are both bottom third in most offensive categories. I would trade their unmeasurable defensive stats for more offense in a heartbeat.

Vaz has a cannon for an arm and in my opinion is doing pretty good. He should get better as time goes on. At this point we do have to look at every position and if an upgrade at that position is poss. especially power wise, we have to do it. Unless we can bring in a quality power bat that is under team control for a couple years, we should just hold onto our assets. It sucks right now because we might be one or two players away from being really special. Our pitching is pretty darn good and can take us deep into the playoffs. I could be wrong but unless we get that one impact bat, we may bow out quick like last year.

Avila is probably going to fall to Earth, but he would be a big upgrade offensively. We probably can get him cheaply too.

Would the rangers be willing to part with beltre?

He could solve the black hole at 3rd and give the youngsters the veteran leadership they so desperately need!

Yes - but not for anything the Red Sox would be willing to give up.

Between the trades and the graduations - the Sox system is very top heavy.

Isn't beltre a free agent at the end of the season?

Leon and Vazquez are both good defensive catchers, but I give the edge to Vazquez.

I really don't care if either hit. Someone has to bat ninth. Upgrade the top eight somewhere. Specifically 1b...

I agree.

Fix what is broken.

Leon does his job and he's at least a league average catcher. I am 100% against giving up anything for a catcher. They are all inconsistent and most of them also can't hit, and the ones that can aren't available. We have way bigger issues.

Yep, stay focused......3B is a hitting position. Fix that.

Well said.

JBJ and two A prospects and two low level prospects for Stanton.

Move Mookie to center field. Done.

Screw the cap.

Beni, Moreland, Travis, Swihart and couple of others prospects not named Devers and Groome for Votto.

Call up Brentz and Devers.

Now you have some power. Screw the cap. (Betts, Xander, Stanton, Votto, Dustin, Hanley, Devers, Bryce and Catcher.)

Now we are cooking.

It wouldn't be possible to acquire Stanton or Votto without giving up Devers and Groome, much less both.

So?

Either the team is all-in for this year or it is not.

This is serious business we are discussing.

No place for f***ing pussies!;)

Stanton's trade value is almost impossible to figure out right now. Probably the riskiest contract in the game. He's been injured every year since he signed that extension.

The Reds would swap Votto for Benintendi straight up and then laugh with the other GM's behind your back for making that deal.
