Two things....

I like the Thornburg acquisition. He should help the pitching staff and we got him relatively cheaply.

Next... for better or worse this alleviates some of our logjam @ 3B. Did that picture make a believer out of DD?

Relief Pitching is the way the game is going, 100 pitch count, Starters mainly going 6 innings, you need the 7, 8, 9th innings covered.

Really, that's OK. Don't want to lose Swihart. Good job by DD.

Yes, I agree. I'd rather trade Shaw, Dubon and Pennington than Swihart.

Good deal!

LOVE this move!

In his prime and found his groove last year. Hes also Under control for a couple more years.

Doubon was blocked and this move proves it. Xander is their long term guy at SS. Im guessing there will be a coresponding move to make Shaw expendable. Not sure DD would just hand the job to Panda.

Bullpens are the way the league is going with a lot of guys only going 5-6IP. DD is making sure we have some strong young arms at the end of the game. Barnes, Kelly, Smith(june/july), Thornburg, Kimbrel...Thats a pretty good back end.

For the second season in a row, Dombrowski's first big move was to acquire a good reliever. It's nice to see he learned from his mistakes in Detroit

This makes way more sense to me than the Kimbrel deal. I realize CK was a top closer in MLB, but his contract was near FA numbers and we gave up way way more than for TYhornburg.

I really love this deal. I could see Thornburg stealing the closer job from CK.

He's a little skinny guy. What is his stuff like?

Mid 90s fastball and good movement on his curve. Absolutely lights out last year. Under control for 3 years, but history of elbow issues. So a mixed bag. If he holds up, and if Carson Smith comes back healthy, that's a dynamic four guys in Kimbrel, Smith, Thornburg, and Kelly. Lots of power there.

I'm not sure why anyone is counting on Kelly to be a force.

I'm one of the few guys that actually liked the Lackey trade, and I still think Kelly gives us high hopes, but to me, that's all it is right now: hope.

Because Joe Kelly the starter isn't very good, but Joe Kelly the reliever is pretty awesome.

Career splits:

- as starter: 4.13 era, 6.4 k/9, 1.44 whip

- as reliever: 2.69 era, 9.0 k/9, 1.27 whip

2016 splits:

- as starter: 8.46 era, 10.9 k/9, 2.24 whip

- as reliever: 1.02 era, 10.7 k/9, 1.02 whip

So it's not just "hope" that Kelly is good out of the bullpen. He's been really, really good out of the bullpen. Of course he might stink it up, but smart money is that he's pretty effective in 2017 in a bullpen role.

‏Source confirms: #RedSox strongly in mix for Mitch Moreland. First reported: @JeffWilson_FWST.

Not a bad option. He can play 1B (we just traded our back-up 1Bman), some OF as a last resort and DH vs RHPs as part of a platoon with Young.

His numbers vs RHPs:

Career: .258/.321/.457/.778

Pro-rated to a 650 PA sample size:

.258 28 85 (28 DBLs)

He sucked this year though:

.221/.293/.407/700 vs RHPs with 17 HRs in 403 PAs.

He's only 31, so maybe he can give us 2015 numbers vs RHPs:

.294/.348/.528/.876

Pro-rated to 650:

.294 33 119 (37 DBLs)

He'd be good off the bench, but aren't we saving the backup 1B role for Sam Travis?

Oh wait, is he supposed to be the DH? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA oh god I hope not that would be awful! That is not a starting hitter on the Boston Red Sox, and especially not the goddamned starting DH.

Hey Dojji,

The Dh role appears to be a platoon this year. Theyre looking for a LHH corner IF type, it seems, to go with Young and maybe Hanley for some games at DH. Moreland would platoon DH/1b/Bench
