Source confirms: Beltran in agreement with the #Astros, one year, $16M, full no-trade clause. First on agreement: @Buster_ESPN.

$16 mil for 1 year seems extremely reasonable, so I can't imagine this was a matter of us wanting him badly but getting outbid. Makes me wonder what else Dombrowski has up his sleeve...

beltran also got a no trade...

Beltran was DD's plan A.

I wonder what plan B is?

Too bad we didn't get him but such is life. DD probably has plans B, C and D. I would expect something will happen in the next few days on the DH front

I doubt this would have been a sticking point for the Red Sox.

My point is that if they weren't willing to go to 1/16, they couldn't have wanted him terribly badly to begin with.

I suspect the luxury tax threshold came into play for the Red Sox. I'm not surprised that Carlos Beltran signed only days after the Collective Bargaining Agreement was settled.

Sources: #Nationals remain in talks with #WhiteSox on Sale and #Pirates on McCutchen. #RedSox open on Sale, but only at lesser asking price.

i think bautista at 2 or 3 years at 20mil per?

I hope NOT. We could have just offered Beltran for 1 year at $20M.

I think we'll sign a LH'd hitting platoon DH. There's a few to choose from.

Possible. DD doesn't have some sort of long histry with platoons and has usually had a full tim DH. But he might try something new.

Another possibility might be Matt Holliday, whose OPS+ over the past three years is better than Beltran's. Although unlike Beltran, Holliday's is definitely trending the wrong way..

I say get Napoli even though the Sox want a left handed hitter.

I really don't see why they are so adamant about a left-hander. Is Adam Lind really going to help this offense more than Napoli?

moss?

alvarez?

I think Moss might work out. (.791 career vs RHPs but .828 in 2016) If you pro-rate his 2016 numbers vs RHPs to 650 PAs:

.223 47 98 (.303 OBP)

Kinda like Chris Carter, and Carter can hit both sides about like that:

2016 prorated to 650

vs RHPs: .222 38 84 (.316 OBP)

vs LHPs: .224 48 125 (.338 OBP)

Adam Lind: .849 OPS vs RHPs and can play 1B or LF. His .589 OPS vs LHPs is atrocious!

Morrison's .762 career splits vs RHPs is not what we need. He's 29, so maybe there's a chance of upside.

1B/3B P Alvarez .801 vs RHPs

1B/OF Moreland .778 career vs RHPs

1B LaRoche .831

1B Morneau .886 (.717 in 2016)

or just go with...

Sandoval .835 vs RHPs (.744 in 2015) assuming Shaw looks good.

I was thinking the same thing about Beltran's deal. It is extremely reasonable and I can't imagine that the Sox couldn't outbid it if they really wanted Beltran.

Perhaps the Red Sox are waiting to shed payroll to stay under the luxury tax threshold before spending big on a free agent.

That could be. If they really wanted Beltran, however, they could have acquired him and worried about shedding payroll later.

Honestly, unlike last offseason, I really don't know what the FO's plans are, outside of getting an 8th inning reliever. Dombrowski may have some big blockbuster up his sleeve, he may be planning a series of mid-size moves, or he may do almost nothing.

His stock may never be higher.

Maybe a team like the CWS would like his 5 years of control for 1 of Frazier. We could add one or two of our RP'ers out of options: Elias, Abad or Hembree.

It was said the Sox really wanted Beltran. They even tried to get him at the deadline.

This may be a sign we are looking to stay under the limit and reset the tax rate for next year's better FA class.

Smart deal for Beltran, like him too. As a GM I'm not doing it. I'll pay you 16 million for next year, but if were in last place or struggling, I cannot move you to improve for future, forget it.

You sign a FA you should always be able to move him. Got to think future.

Because he does good doesn't mean Team will do good. Best time to Trade, Player doing well, and other Teams looking for help.

It should be an investment, both for present and future.
