unintentionally hits the catcher or the ball in back of him

on the backswing, it shall be called a strike only (not interference).

The ball will be dead, however, and no runner shall

advance on the play"

 

So not interference in terms of the batter, but runners must return.

I was at the game against the Angels I think where he blew a save and got booed of the mound. That was the end for him. He looked pretty hook up when a fan on the 3rd base side threw a water bottle that landed by the mound. The guy was irate and he had a helluva an arm too.
