Yup.

He was born to close. He is useless in other innings.

I think SK brought this up when we acquired him due to Kiblels track record. I'm not sure, but I think that is his track record.

A closer you can't rely on to maybe help out in the 8th in high pressure or playoff games, just isn't as valuable as one you can. It limits their use considerably.

It's fair to question Farrell, but if Kimbrel consistently turns into a total stiff in non-save situations that's one more significant problem for our pitching staff.

Kimbrel?!? But he was a waste of prospects!!!

i know you were going for sarcasm here but he really ruined your joke....

Farrell should have been able to use Kimbrel there. He was plenty rested, and he's our incredibly expensive, usually blows guys away 'relief ace', isn't he?

Looks like they're going to have to print up some 'Kimbrel rules' for Farrell.

Maybe he has been talking to price about how to perform as an "ace".........

there are some really idiotic things being posted in this thread. like seriously you dont expect your team / your manager to have your closer pitch the 9th inning at home in a tie or close game?????? you only expect your high priced/high talent closer to pitch in save situations? really? i'm sorry but that is not how this works. there are other sports that may work better for you.

There seems to be an unwritten rule that any high-priced pitcher that comes to Boston has to be a disappointment their first season.

It's completely fair to expect Kimbrel to a.) pitch and b.) pitch well in a 1-run game. 99% of the blame goes on Kimbrel. I hate Farrell, but blaming him there is absolute weak sauce. Edited by FenwayFaithful

Closers should be able to pitch in non-save situations. However, they generally can't. Kimbrel didn't lose this game. The offense scuffled its feet for two long while Price kept them in it.

apologies. is that against the forum rules?

Nonsense.

While the offense didn't bail anyone out, kimbrel certainly lost this game. He faced 4 batters and didn't get 1 of them out.

Sox were down 3-2 when Kimbrel came in. The Sox never scored another run. He didn't lose the game.

This was not on Farrell. Kimbrel has to be able to come into the game in that situation and preserve the score. That 9th inning was on Kimbrel, and Kimbrel alone.

Kimbrel did not lose the game, but all the blame on Farrell is out of line.

Fair point, but would you rather come up for last licks being down 1 run or 5?

I'd rather the Sox have scored prior to the 9th inning with all those runners in scoring position.

I haven't blamed Farrell for this loss. I've blamed the offense.

Didn't mean to direct the Farrell blame at you. I was agreeing with your point about Kimbrel not losing the game.

Also, the blame laid on Farrell is pretty mild. Which post is out of line? Their reasoning was "Kimbrel has sucked in non-save situations, maybe he can't pitch in non-save situations so stop throwing him out there." To me, that's more of a criticism on Kimbrel than Farrell.

The big problem right now is that they are tanking while playing at home. They need to be winning these series. Don't fall behind now and then find yourself on a long road trip. That is a recipe for disaster.

Honestly, if they can't win at home now, you can probably stick a fork in their chances at any sort of playoff run.

Blah... They are still an 86 win team to me.

Why do you always feel the need to interject in two other posters' conversations and tell them how to post?

And my post, unlike yours, did have to do with the discussion.

Stop being a nosy douche and mind your own f***ing business.

Your post was ridiculous.

The Sox would have most likely lost 3-2 if Kimbrel pitched lights out. Kimbrel didn't lose the game as you originally suggested since he didn't come in with a lead. The offense had several chances to win the game and they failed to do so. Kimbrel had no chance to win the game.

No more ridiculous than your post stating that you'd rather enter the 9th tied rather than down a run.

And kimbrel did have a chance to win the game.

I never mentioned them being tied.
