Mal,

1964, Fenway ... versus the Tigers. Lost 8-6. Left a poor taste in my mouth. It might not have helped that my entire family was crammed into the 1961 Rambler Classic wagon (red and white) and we had to be together as we rode back to Rochester, NH. My two younger brothers never were into sports, and they cried and whined all the way home. My two older brothers were more stoic but neither were into baseball much. We didn't make things easy for my parents ... tired, irritated, whiny, and bummed because we lost.

Every other trip to Fenway was much better, though. Much! The last time at Fenway was in 1971. I've been to Yanqui Stadium once, two summers ago, to see the Sox play there. That was terrific. Big surprise, the wife came home one day and asked if I'd like to go to the City ... to see the Red Sox play the Yanquis! She had tickets in hand! What a gal! Lester beat Tanaka, Ross homered in the top of the 9th to win 2-1. I wore my Ortiz shirt, she wore my Victorino shirt ... the Pedey shirt had a sleeve come thread come off. We had a blast.

I remember all four of my first boston games

First sox game was in 1980 and I was 10. I remember there being a lot of open seats on a weekday night vs Texas. We were sitting right by canvas alley, front row. I went with a buddy of mine and my dad. Had to beg him for weeks just to get tix one time. Dont remember much about the game but walking into Fenway was amazing for me the first time. Me and my buddy wondered how cool it would bento watch a game on top of the big green wall. Well, now its possible. I remember the greenest grass ive ever seen and how big the players were. Good times.

Firts pats game was the 3-0 snow plow game vs Miami. We drove up with my uncle and two of his buddys. I think i knew every rolling stones song after that because he kept looping the 8-track (yes, i said 8-track) in the car the whole 1.5 hr drive there and back. Great game. We were way up top.

Bruin game i remember the most. Old Gahden. Section 104 top corner. Bs vs Nordiques. Bs win 7-2 and there was a Bench clearing brawl. John Wensink, peter Mcnabb , terry O, stan jonathan, etc...went with two of my buddys and my dad. He was a bigger Bs fan so i went to a few games when I was young.

Celtics game was in 1981 with my dad and another basball coach friend of his who has season tix first row first balcony in the corner at the old Gahdan. Dont remember who it was against, but we won and had a great time..Im Not a huge BB Fan, so it was my one and only Cs game.

Great thread.

One thing sticks out, seems we have a group of young bucks and old f***s! Lol.

Seriously though, it now gives us an idea of the age of some of the posters which kinda puts some of their posts in perspective.

Thanks for the memory. I got marreid in July 1948 in Germany, Came back i early September. Took my wife, Erika, to Fenway witthin days after we got back. Great seats, 1st base line. Joe DiMaggio had just returned after an injury. He homered while my wife (now pregnant) knitted from the first pitch to the last. The two events linger in my memory, while the winner, score etc. are all forgotten. (And I'm not interested enough to go Google my brains out trying to find out!

This is so true.. I feel so young hearing these people going to games 30 years before I was born mentioning players I've never heard of.. and I thought seeing Jorge Cantu, Melvin Mora and Aubrey Huff were "old" players..

Threads like this are fun though, this site has really helped my knowledge of Red Sox history and baseball history in general.

That's awesome.

IMO, one of the best parts of baseball is the history and folklore associated with it.

To me the other sports just don't measure up in that department.

Well, soccer could be a great one as well in that department. A lot of history and folklore is there as well.

North America is different than Central & South America or even Europe for that matter.

We tend to think of the "big 4" MLB,NHL,NFL,NBA.

Soccer or futbol is an afterthought for the most part.

Yeah that's true but I think that your soccer fan base has incremented in recent years. I recall seeing a lot of fans from the US rooting for their team in Brasil in the last World Cup. But yeah, the passion is quite different regarding soccer outside the USA.

IMO the best league. I root for a local team. The team of my birth City, Veracruz; Los Tiburones Rojos de Veracruz. Outside Mexico I like La Bella señora de Turín, La Juventus.

Regarding my first major league game it was last year. It was at Yankee Stadium. Boston won. It was one of my greatest expiriences ever. Loved the environment. You can see a lot of families, thing that these days is hard to see in fútbol games in Mexico or South America for instance. After that series in NY I went to the home opener game against the Nationals in Fenway. We won as well. Then I went to a couple games against BAL after the series against WSN, and we won as well LOL!. I was very lucky, we won in all the games I went. The environment in Boston is just spectacular. A lot of beautiful women in both parks LOL!. I will try to go in August again, but this time with my wife and little baby. Last year I went with my best friend who lives in Boston and his girlfriend and a couple of friends of her. I had the opportunity to visit several bars outside Yankee stadium and Fenway park as well. It's worth to mention that I made a lot of friends LOL! People in NY and Boston were very nice with me. I also had the opportunity to visit several restaurants, Btw in both cities you can find great rest. Definitely is a must go every year.

For what it's worth, last year the Seattle Sounders of Major League Soccer had an average attendance of 44,247 while the Seattle Mariners this year are averaging 26,637 per game. The Portland Timbers and Vancouver Whitecaps filled their stadiums last year with averages of 21,144 and 20,408, respectively. The New England Revolution averaged 16,681 last year.

To be fair, Portland and Vancouver only have competition from one Big 4 league in their cities. Seattle only has two of the Big 4. I'm not sure when the soccer season is. Does it conflict with the NFL or MLB in Seattle?

Another park I would like to go is Wrigley in Chicago seems like the atmosphere is great as well, but I'd like to go when the Red Sox play there. Probably this year in the WS? Imagine that. LOL!

FWIW, the highest ranked MLS Finals was had about 2 million viewers. The lowest ranked WS was about 13 million. Edited by mvp 78

Sept 14, 1977 Yanks vs Sawx

Reggie hit a dinger with Munson on giving Ed Figueroa a 2-0 win over Reggie Cleveland.

I remember it being a long subway ride from South Brooklyn up to the Bronx. And my dad hating every minute of it because he was an old Brooklyn Dodgers fan and detested everything to do with the Yanks.

I remember that damn game LOL

Wrigley is awesome, Chicago is a great town.

I would also suggest the Ballpark at Arlington.

Maybe the Rangers could give us their dump and us Sox fans would finally be able to enjoy a game in comfort!

Hey bosoxmal, perhaps this will refresh your memory.

In 1948, the Yankees and Red Sox played but eight games in September. In only one of those games did Joltin Joe homer. And it was a doozy. Yankees won 11-6!

Friday September 10, 1948 – DiMaggio went 3 for 5 including his 34th homer of the season with 3 on in the 10th inning off Earl Caldwell.

Caution: Leave the knitting needles or any other sharp objects out of reach so as not to stab yourself during the final inning.

The MLS season overlaps with the MLB season.

The atmosphere is incredible at the home games of the reigning MLS champion Portland Timbers.

Soccer is the talk of the lunchroom at work in Portland. No one talks about baseball anymore.

Yeah my sister was there a couple a years ago and loved the park, and she doesn't understand anything about baseball LOL!

Also, my brother and my other sister often go to Chicago and they love the city.

Definitely I have to go.

June 28,1991--Riverfront Stadium with my dad. Reds 8, Astros 5. Barry Larkin hit three HR that night, including back to back once with Eric Davis after hitting two HR the day before against SD. It was Mookie-like. Will never forget it, that place was rocking. I'd love to come up with a copy of that game somewhere, I'm sure it exists, but have no clue how to get it.

Date: August 3, 1959

Place: Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum

Game: MLB All Star Game #2

I became a Red Sox fan at an early age. Wasn't into the Dodgers or the National League. I begged and pleaded with my dad to take me to the All Star Game because I knew my hero, Frank Malzone, would be the AL starting third baseman. My dad finally relented and I wasn't disappointed. I got to see Frank smack a hanging curve ball from hometown favorite, Don Drysdale, over the left field fence as the AL struck first. The AL went on to win the game.
