Just to be clear, a .725 is about exactly average for a left fielder these days.

I understand that, but to further the clarification saying a guy is about average....isn't exactly the greatest argument in his favor. This isn't a knock against Holt, nor is it a cry to replace him in LF, I'm merely stating that it should be an option.

This is a thread about roster moves and trade speculation no??? what does this team need? an improvement against LHP. We are currently 26th in BA against LHP, 24th in OBP and 25th in SLG% I was merely suggesting an upgrade in LF against LHP. Shaw can't hit LHP....now I'm not saying to take him out of the lineup now against LHP but if he still has horrible splits come July I'd consider plugging Holt at 3B vs. LHP. In that scenario I'm looking for a bat to put in left. I'm not necessarily even talking about Holt not being a starter. But depending on what's out there or if Castillo takes a step forward I would consider it. In that situation we would be better....what's wrong with making the team better???

Nothing. But they invested 13 million in Young to hit lefties.

My belief is we're already at least average in left and we should be above average if Young hits lefties like he should. And offense is not our area of need. If we're going to upgrade it should be about pitching.

One of the main reasons I like Holt is that I'm very fond of cheap controlled assets that are productive...they are what is making this team a success in spite of some bloated contracts that are producing little or nothing.

OMG I can't believe I forgot about Young. Young has actually hit LHP this year and had some good games lately. I wouldn't exactly put him in a platoon role immediately, but if Shaws splits continue I'd start Holt at 3B vs.

FTR, I really like cheap cost controlled assets too. I happen to think they are part of a championship caliber team.

Shaw should never sit for either Holt or Young. He hits lefties better than Holt and Young stinks

No Holt is .273/.429/.273 this year vs. LHP while Shaw is .080/.115/.120 vs. LHP I suspect Shaw won't be that horrible vs. LHP but he's not beyond a platoon given his performance vs. LHP.

Young is a .263/.363/.475 lifetime hitter vs. LHP and in 2016 he is .250/.400/500 hitter vs. LHP. He might stink....but not vs. LHP.

i don't care what the small sample size says, he is the superior hitter against lefties. Holt isn't terrible, but he is not as good as Shaw. Young just stinks. There will be no platoon with Shaw.

You want more data???

In 2015 in the minors he was .230/.263/.347 vs. LHP

in 2014 in the minors he was .228/.292/.347 vs LHP

He is not going to get platooned. Mark it down and get back to me. He is hitting better at the MLB level than he did in the minors across the board. His minor league numbers mean nothing. Holt will lose ABs to Young, not Shaw. And I think Young will play himself off the team eventually.

Ok so a larger body of work is meaningless to you if it's not at the MLB level, but when the stats fit your narrative a sss is fine but when it doesn't it's "just a small sample size"

You literally just said you don't care what a SSS says, except when it says Shaw is doing something he didn't do for 5 years prior....and one of those things is NOT hitting LHP.

I wouldn't bet the Sox platoon Shaw because I think his numbers will improve vs. LHP but I think they should. And I will be in here posting what the numbers say when that day comes as well.

People who put up drastically better numbers vs. their minor league numbers is almost non existent. There are a few, but it is rare. I wouldn't be surprised if Shaw is a guy who can do marginally better (and those are good numbers) but he wasn't ever good against LHP in the minors too. So why would we think he's going to start being good now vs. LHP when he didn't hit it well in the minors nor is he hitting LHP now?

To upgrade our pitching staff, that's gonna take a big trade. I would wNt the Sox to go big, nothing less than a solid #2 SP.

That would be something along the lines of what Moon has mentioned. Swihart, Devers, Kopech, maybe Holt, or Kelly, maybe Dubon even.not all of them but atleast 4 of them I'd imagine. I'd like to see what ERod has to offer before we do all that. LF seems like the easiest way to add a little more HR power and we wouldn't have to come close to the package that getting a TOTR SP would haul in. We're just speculating here. I'd like a LFer w/ 2 years control because Benintendi is in the pipeline. I'm not sold on Holt as our LFer or Young.

it is rare, but not unheard of. One Red Sox player that performed better at the major league level than the minor league level was Carlton Fisk. Some guys mature and take their game to a new level in the majors.

The phrase "fit your narrative" always sounds ridiculous to me in the context of a sports message board. This isn't politics. There is no narrative. You are cobbling together his minor league numbers with an extremely small sample size of 25 ABs in 2016 as proof of something that I don't think it proves. I think his minor league numbers are probably useless at this point as he has a evidently matured as a hitter and taken his game to a different level. He was in that process last season when his lefty splits were excellent and that sample size was more than 3 1/2 times the size of the 2016 sample size. I am not choosing to believe one small sample over another because one supports me. Neither sample means anything to me. What means something to me is the way he approaches his ABs against LHP. He has an approach that I believe will succeed. I doubt that over the long haul that he will hit lefties as well as he will hit RHP, but I don't think his LHP splits will be significantly bad to warrant sitting our second most potent bat.

Not necessarily. Go offer something reasonable to the Twins and bring in Ervin Santana. Santana is a good trade target since he's usually someone you can count on to be durable, not likely to break the bank in trade, and he ought to pitch well enough to upgrade the rotation over your worst starter.

Lateral moves wouldn't really help us go for the throat and win a WS. I feel we already have 2-3 Ervin Santanas on our staff at any given point and especially within the last 3 years. Regardless, I don't like trying to build our rotation from the bottom up. Why bother w/ Santana when ERod comes back in week? I think if the Sox make a move at all it would be for a TOTR SP. That and bonafide LFer.

Over coaching can be as bad as just plain bad coaching. the data can give you good helpful info but sometimes you just have to let them play. Sitting Shaw for any pitcher would be ridiculous regardless of what the numbers indicate. sometimes just letting them play is the best thing. i'm sure that he will have his ups and downs but I like his ups a lot more than his downs.

You just won't let up about that LFer will you? :) But seriously, who do you have in mind?

A consistently average to above average starter like Santana is not a "lateral" move if we replace Buchholz with him.

Matt Holliday. On the last year of his deal with the Cards with a team option for 2017, still hitting well but not so well he'd cost mucho prospecto, team isn't in immediate contention. If you're looking for a deadline deal to upgrade in left, the guy to go after is Holliday.

If we make 2 deadline deals, one for ESantana, one for Holliday, we'll have had an aggressive but very rational deadline and should be in good shape to contend.

Lol :) It's tough because I don't have the 2017-2018 FA list. I'd rather get a two yr rental than a 1 yr rental. Most intriguing idea I have is CarGo. Hear me out, 'cause I know he's slumping bad this yr, and it seems his attitude cld use an adjustment as well. But his career L/R splits are good. Way more power facing righties of course due to the larger sample size, but still holds a .267/.345/.839 line vs LHP the last 3 yrs. The Astros seem to be growing tired of him (for good reason, no doubt) and maybe he just needs a change of scenery perhaps? He's a FA at the end of the season, so it wld definetly be a short term thing. But the fact that he's looking to cash-in because he's a FA at the end of the yr could be a good gamble for the Sox...

Could be a horrible idea though I realize that.

Why not? It makes no sense to block off the idea of trades with whole teams just because one or two went badly recently.
