Pablo and Hanley and $178 million are blocking Shaw and Travis.

For the reasons UserName cited, (Sam) Travis is not blocked.

Pablo, Hanley, Shaw, and Travis --Four players for three positons (1B, 3B and DH). Someone is blocked, but hey if you want to exonerate Ben for the $178 million of contracts, it is your choice.

Is it the money or the roster jam? Because if it's the money, sure, if it's the roster jam, DD has made it clear that the superior players will play. That's why Shaw will start at 3B come opening day. It's a non-issue.

Plus Tarvis should be in MiLB for about a full season. By which time Hanley will be a a full time DH.

Of course Travis may totally tear it up and be promoted this August. At least for a cup of Joe.

I never said anything about exonerating Ben for those contracts. Once again you read things that aren't there at all.

Once again, you argue in a nonresponsive manner to a post of mine .

The Red Sox have already demonstrated that they're willing to play Shaw over Panda. There's simply no reason to be concerned about Sam Travis's progress being blocked. Especially when he hasn't even played AAA ball yet.

But what should I do with my pitchfork?!?!?!?

As usual, we are arguing past each other.

And Travis will have trouble getting playing time next year. If Hanley can handle 1B this year and stays healthy, Travis will have nowhere to play.

No, because Hanley will be DH'ing. If Travis can play, he will play. If the veterans are outplaying him, he will get more seasoning. That is how DD operates, simple as that.

And do we need a full time DH making $22 million/year? That is more than Ortiz has ever made, and he is the greatest DH in history. Full time DH's are a dying breed. Ortiz may be the last of the full time full career DH's. Also, if Hanley plays well at 1B, I think even DD will have trouble telling him to leave his glove at home.

This whole line of discussion started with my post taking a shot at BC for saddling us with 2 big unnecessary contracts.

If Hanley hits, will he be an unnecessary contract? Even though Ortiz never made 22 million, if Hanley plays well enough to be considered for a full time 1B position or a rotation with Travis, it's not uneccessary money. If he hits like he's capable of, he will earn his money. Again, production will dictate playing time. That is a Dombrowski trademark.

I would rather the $22 million have been spent on good starting pitching. That has been the bigger need for the last 2 off seasons. That is what I think HR's contract is unecessary. We have guys who can play 1B and hit. We don't have a lot of good pitching in the organization.

Hanley's contract was not the reason they didn't go for more SP's. This is the Boston Red Sox, not exactly a team with the ability to call "poverty". They felt good enough about their SP depth that they actually traded Miley away for Smith.

I would have deployed the capital in a different manner. I never understood signing Pablo and Hanley in that off season. One of them, yes, but not both. Especially, when our starting pitching was a steaming pile of garbage.

Ted - i get what you are saying here and I sort of agree but there is a but. First of all I think that if Ramirez is competent at first, unless Travis has a monster year, they will try to get at least one more year out of him at first. When you talk 20 plus million though I would always of course go with pithing first. As I've said before, if there is a team with an unlimited budget, I think that it is our guys . Big question is how do you spend that 20 million? If Porcello is the best that you can do, you might just as well go for the bat. I'm hoping that Dumbrowski kind of sees it our way.

Watched the video of Espinoza today. He has the goods! 95-98 mph fastball with a 76mph change up or curve depending on what he wants to throw. At his age, his progress will be fun to watch. He doesn't look like a skinny kid.

I remember being inundated with videos of Rubby De La Rosa on here. We need to temper expectations a little bit.

Not in the same universe potential wise though.

I have no idea.

I remember Filix Dubount being hailed as the next big thing, too.

Now he is lucky to be the #5 in Oakland.

I hope he gets good coaching, learns how to speak English ( if does not already ) and stays healthy.

The Sox could use a home grown stud in the rotation.

Oh I don't bring it up really with any expectations just to kind of drum up some enthusiasm for the kids. Have to be realistic but for a kid his age with what he has I am very happy that he is ours.
