It remains to be seen how things will work out for the long term. So far, so good.

This can be said about every GM in the game. It's baseball, no-one can predict longterm results accurately.

I met DD at an event the Tigers held at WMU when I went there and he was very gracious, pleasant and patient. He's a human being like the rest of us, and was probably caught on a bad day.
Even so he had no right to be rude to people like that. I have spoken to a few other sox fans who said he was pretty nasty a few times they seen him. If he didn't want to be bothered he should have had them open the store just for him for an hr so he could shop with no one bothering him.

That's really not practical or realistic. Dave Dombrowski has a right to be left alone just as does everyone else. The people who are being rude are the ones who are bothering him during what is a private moment.

If he really did not want to be pestered or bugged while shopping he could have shopped on another day when no one was around.

Maybe DD is a jerk. A lot of public figures are jerks, probably more than we think. I don't remember which sportswriter said it, but he said that the fastest way to stop being a fan is to cover a team on a daily basis. For that reason, I really have very little curiosity about players off the field. If the guy plays hard for the Red Sox, I am a fan. As far as the FO goes, I really don't give a hoot about any of them. They might as well be nameless and faceless as far as I am concerned. I just hope they put together a good team.

not that young, I am almost 34. I have worked in CS for over ten years and I know all about having bad days. Especially working CS in college as well. I used to work security in a high rise in Boston and didn't matter if I was having a bad day, if I was rude to a customer I got in trouble or written up. If the customer was rude to me and I had some get down right nasty with me all because they didn't have access or were not on the list, I still had to be as nice as possible. Not saying he doesn't have the right to a bad day or the right to be in a mood, but he doesn't have the right to be nasty to people either. Edited by Redsoxgirl51282

I was brought up not to accost strangers in public. It is rude do so without politely asking someone's permission such as saying "excuse me" or "may I bother you". It is rude behavior not to. Just because he is the GM doesn't mean that fans have a right to bother him because he was in the store.

You are right that is true to an extent. He is famous people know who he is so he is bound to get pestered even when he doesn't want to. It wasn't like he was in the men's room trying to go pee, he was simply shopping in a public place I.E. the red sox store, so he shouldn't have expected to just be entirely left alone and not bothered while he shopped.

So because he was "famous" it is his fault that people were rude.

Personally Dave could be a little nicer. I registered for Christmas at Fenway and did not get chosen even though I am a RSN member. I ended up going when they opened it up to public at one. On my way out I went into the souvenir store and happen to see Dave in there as well. He was apparently Christmas shopping. People were going up to him asking for photos and autographs, and I thought about talking to him too. He was getting increasingly frustrated with everyone and was wicked rude. I felt like saying why the heck would you come in here knowing full well you were gonna get heckled by fans. He is the president he could of had the sox open the store earlier for just him only.

He was Christmas shopping - people were going up to him asking for autographs and pictures. He didn't like it and obviously let people know how he felt. We don't need to like him for that but I'm just guessing that we should respect his privacy and his right to do what all of us have a right to do. Some people would actually felt it discourteous to bug him. That I realize is an old and traditional way of looking at things.

I peed at a urinal next to Henry Kissinger in the late 1980's and had a million questions that I wanted to ask him, but resisted the urge even when we were at the sink.

people were not rude to him he was being kinda rude to them. That's what I meant. If he didn't want to be bothered he shouldn't have gone into the store during Christmas at fenway when it was alive and bustling with tons of red sox fans.

You and Dr K could have talked baseball. He is a huge Yankees fan of course.

You are blaming the victim.

My questions would have been about Geopolitics and Triangular Diplomacy -- light subjects. I wouldn't want to get into the realm of emotion bringing up baseball. BTW, FTR, the Kissinger story is a true story and the post about seeing Ben kick a dog was just a joke.

The Politician that I would liked to have spoken to about baseball would have been Richard Nixon. He was a huge fan and very much up on baseball history and s***.

I have a Nixon story. When worked at the IRS (1983-1986) the Tax Court would hear cases at 26 Federal Plaza in the same building that Nixon maintained his offices during those years. Many of the IRS attorneys purchased his memoirs and brought it up to his office for a signature. His assistant would take the books and he would sign it by the next day. He had waived his Secret Service protection and would walk around the city by himself without any bodyguards. I never met him, but many of my colleagues met him in the building. He was awkward with small talk, but when he did initiate small talk it was always about sports.

Richard M. Nixon = a very tragic story.

I can see both sides to this. Dombrowski is under no obligation to cater to the fans' requests for autographs, etc. He should be able to do his Christmas shopping without being bothered.

OTOH, as a public figure, he has to know and expect that fans are going to approach him when he is out in public, especially when he is in a Red Sox store. It might be an inconvenience, but he doesn't have to be rude about it.

It depends on how he was approached. BTW, I don't think he would have had the same experience in virtually any other big league city. I wonder how many Tiger fans would recognize their GM.

Over a decade of following the Tigers with Dombrowski, never heard a complaint of him being rude. Not even 6 months in Boston and there's complaints of him being rude.

Anyways, since Avila took over the Tigers, we are learning the Tigers never even had an analytics department under Dombrowski. Hopefully he doesn't cut back the analytics with the Red Sox.

Does anybody know if DD was an autograph signer in Detroit? I would not expect him to change his stripes here. Plus one man's rude when you are not getting the news you had hoped for is another man's terse. I would not start boiling the tar and plucking the feathers just yet.

He would sign and always seemed approachable. I think there is more to this story.

A veritable flood of criticism!! At least it would be considered as much here.

The first recommendation I would have for any player or pro sports exec coming here would be to:

- hang up on the Globe Telemarketer when they finally get to your phone number

- same as above for any local paper

- if as part of JH's involvement all execs now get the Globe free, GIVE THEM THE WRONG ADDRESS. Let the papers pile up on some doorstep in Back Bay

- send the dog out after the local newspaper boy

- forget all forum URL's relating to the Red Sox and all local news outlet web sites

Sound advice. Also, never listen to Sport Talk Radio.
