Knew it as soon as I saw it, knowing his history with that part of his body.

Is it time to try Swihart?

@Sean_McAdam

Industry source: Swihart will join Red Sox Sat. though Sox will continue to explore external options. Saltalamacchia not among them, however

I'd rather have Salty.

Personally, I don't want Salty back. The guy is a butcher behind the dish and his bat isn't good enough to offset his bad defense. I don't know much about Quintero's defense, but I'd venture to guess he's an upgrade (and I use upgrade very lightly in this instance) over Salty. And given our rotation's instability at the moment, they need catchers that are at least competent catching-wise.

I'm only half serious. Salty isn't the answer. I don't want him back.

Jeez no. I'd rather have Montgomery come out of retirement.

The Eck kept harping on Hannigan leaving his hand just hanging out there, but most catchers do the same thing. It's not often you see a guy stick his hand behind his back. Try and catch/block a pitch in the dirt with one hand behind your back.

No way, I didn't see the game. He had one fouled off his hand the other day and I was thinking that he's going to get hurt having his hand just hanging out there. .

Dang....... I thought he was really solid....... this isn't good.

Year of the injured catcher. What a costly f***ing HBP.

This really stinks. It was bad enough to lose Vazquez, and now Hanigan. I have never really concerned myself with the offensive side of a catcher, but I really appreciate most of Hanigan's at bats.

He did put the ball in play and put up good ABs.

If you're going to have injuries happen, it might as well be at positions where you have high end prospects to replace them. Catchers usually need extra time in the minors, but hopefully Swihart is the exception to a lot of rules.

Well, one thing I have said repeatedly is that I like the depth of this team. Thankfully, Swihart is supposed to be a very good defensive catcher and pitch framer as well as being good offensively. I just hope he's ready, and I hope that the pitchers' period of adjustment and gaining familiarity with Swihart is not a bumpy one.

Plus, his OBP was .354 which is just about his career mark. His OPS was climbing.

I think this decision to call up Swihart made Humberto mad. He tried throwing a runner stealing third and promptly hit the batter in the stomach with the throw. I dont understand how a play that bad can be made by a 35 year old vet. Looks like the Red Sox made the right choice in who they called up.

I think that we are all excited to see him up with the big club.

However, the kid is not ready after only a total of 36 games in AAA. I heard Terry Louvello talk about him this morning.

Swilhart is a good catch and throw guy but needs development in all other areas of catching. That is what his coach said. Calling a game is the biggest hole for him.

It is too bad about Hannigan. He was having a very good start by doing everything well.

Oh well.

GO SWILHART!!!!!!1!!!!1

Calling a game is a hole - but the coaching staff can work around that in the short term. Is the pitch framing good? That is more relevant. That said, he has been very good in his AAA stance and there was a job opening.

Here is the thing - it is tempting to paternistically keep going "whoa your horses, let's give him more seasoning" - but he has made the organization notice him. That in itself is a good sign.

Louvello also was asked who calls the pitches and he said that "it's 100% the catcher".

I trust Louvello over a nobody on a message board.

If a team is worried about a catcher's game calling - they're going to just let him flail without sending some signs over? That seems awfully naive. Game calling is an excellent skill - but if a kid is young, other folks can provide help. And at the end of the day, you're going to put down a sign the pitcher agrees with - because it's ultimately on his execution.

Then Louvello is a liar, I guess. He said that when a catcher continues to look into the dougout it is for direction on how to handle the running game ONLY.

But again, Louvello is either a liar or I am totally going Alzheimers.

I like to think that both are true. He's a liar, and you're too old to remember what you had for breakfast. ;)

Oh f***ing excuse me for not knowing the guy's exact name.

I am so glad to have such smart people monitoring my spelling.
