Report says Hanley wants to stay in LF for 2016. Well then who the f*** plays 1B? Trade? FA? Someone from within?

That is not difficult ... could be a jobshare

Who would you split time there?

I would go after Chris Davis and add power to the lineup and have the everyday 1B for years to come.

But if his asking price is too high. Move Hanley to 1B full time and make a trade for CarGo and put him in RF and Castillo in LF and Betts in center. This lineup needs some more power in it next year. CarGo was dangled at the deadline so he is available. I know pitching is first and foremost on the to do list but this lineup needs outfield power if Hanley gets moved to the infield but if they leave him in LF which I think everyone thinks is a mistake I'd hope they atleast make a run after Crush Davis to hold down 1B.

If hanlley has indeed said that he wants to remain in left field and the Sox decide to accommodate him, they resolve nothing. If they keep him, he needs to go where they want him and probably not where he wants to be. DH in waiting and if he wears a Red sox uniform they will have to make the move soon or face the same situation they find themselves in now. What to do with Sandoval, Ramirez, and Ortiz is an issue that they have to deal with before they can rebuild or even get better.

It's also possible that the Sox told Hanley to either work on getting better in LF or move to 1b, a move he has not been in favor of.

Let's hope he chose the former and plans to actually work at it.

He's still far from great, but he has improved.

I hope you are right. It seems as though he ought to be able to at least do a decent job out there. Maybe he has been told that is what will happen if he doesn't do what he needs do to get better. That type of leadership would be a good thing.

Signing Chris Davis makes zero sense.

You can staff first base cheaply - this is not a position to worry too much about.

You are correct in saying that and although I would not advocate for a trade to take care of a first base issue, I think that staffing it correctly is the bigger deal. There have been some some good suggestions made and others that I have read. They sound good and should be able to do but it might not be a simple as it seems.

I don't mean to imply it's simple ... but there are a lot of guys who are qualified to do it, and it might require a platoon which is ok.

They're letting Hanley decide what position he'll play, even though his defense in left sucks llama cock? What kind of operation is this?

I don't know if "cheaply" is the word I'd use for the people I had in mind (one of the two guys we signed last winter who can't defend their current positions for s***).

I would like to see Dave brought in but I think they will stick with Ben and the Angels or Blue Jays will end up with Dombrowski

Considering Dombrowski signed Fielder, no thanks.

Shaw could be the everday 1B next year.

Let's not get ahead of ourselves. Not when we need to move Mount Sandoval from 3B and Hanley from LF and will still have Ortiz blocking the DH position.

Fielder has an 897 OPS and is leading the majors in hits right now so it's kind of a funny time to knock that signing.

You can't make it to the playoffs with 2 rookies in the rotation at the start of the season. I think people here envisioned all of those rookies in the rotation because the rotation that broke camp was so bad that we had no chance of competing with them. They also had almost no chance of getting through the season as a unit.

I don't think anyone really expected the original starting 5 to get through the season as a unit. Even when you have a good rotation, the chances of them all getting through the season as a unit are slim.

I would not spend big on a 1B. Find a less expensive option for 1B and focus on pitching.

Who said they're letting Hanley decide where he wants to play? Just because he said that he wants to stay in LF doesn't mean that

1. he'll stay there and

2. it was his decsion to stay there if he does.

Shaw is worth a look, but he has had how many ABs in the bigs? He's done well, but far too soon to anoint him our starting 1B for next year.

If Joe Kelly makes another start, that will confirm that the sox are going for that number 1 pick. He should have ZERO consideration for a spot in next years rotation to start the year.

The bullpen after Koji and Tazawa continues to be horrible.

It would be nice not seeing Breslow's sourpuss face again. It's mystifying how awful he is and is kept on the team for the last 2 year. Give Barnes a better look. Ogando time is coming to a close if he cannot stop giving up HRs.

Not only is the starting rotation going to have a complete makeover but the bullpen is as well. I'd like to see some of the young guys get opportunities to see what they can do to see how many new arms is needed. Ross, Breslow, and Ogando are done. DFA all of them.

I think we will see a trade come at the waiver deadline to add depth the the bullpen atleast. I wonder if Ben could swing a deal while the Padres for Kimberly and Ross in one deal. Their were reports that the Sox were in on Craig and Tyron at the non waiver deadline so it may happen who knows.

It would definitely be a bust for confidence for never year. Let Kimbrel close and Koji and Taz set him up. That would take stress and might help keep both healthy and not get as much arm fatigue down the stretch if the Sox are close to being in it next year.

But that is a definite pipe dream tho.

Plus he was working for Illitch, a known spend now, ask questions later kind of guy.

Bullpen will not be that hard a fix - just have to be ruthless and keep churning arms. Kimbrel is probably going to cost way too much money and it is a silly way to find a closer to begin with. They need more relief help, but the best way is to throw stuff against the wall.

Fielder has had a nice season. Was sort of a sound deal for both sides - Tigers needed a 2B and this move solved a dumpster fire defensively. The evidence of Fielder's slippage was scant - and seemed like something that would bounce back.

Unless something major happens Ramirez or Panda will be playing 1B in 2016. No way BC puts Ramirez back in LF and keeps his job. Most of $$$$$ the Sox have for 2016 should be invested in pitching. As of now the only sure arms I see on the 2016 staff are Rodriguez, Uehara, and Tazawa.

They should start throwing stuff against the wall now right now. I agree 100 percent. Kelly, Barnes, and whoever else they believe can be used out of the bull pen next year need to start coming out of the bull pen now. That way if they do suck, it will be in meaningless games this year instead of games that count next year.
