I don't know better. I'm just curbing my enthusiasm for the youngsters until I actually see them do something. Like many fans I get a little caught up in the hype on occasion. I hope that the people doing the scouting are the best in the game.

Remember that the people who do the rankings are in no way, shape or form associated with the Red Sox organization.

Good to know. Who does do the rankings? It has not been an uncommon practice for the best young prospects do be playing in Double A Portland. I didn't really see much that was too impressive yesterday. Once again though, hard to top the show for the price. Great family atmosphere. Great ballpark. Easy in easy out.

Johnson back on the mound tonight. I would like to be watching him pitch. If he continues to pitch well and JBJ continues to hit, there has to be something somewhere for these guys. I would hate to lose a guy like Johnson but if he continues getting it done, he represents more than just insurance.

Who do the rankings???

There are independent publications who do this stuff. Baseball America has their own scouts who do their own rankings. And there are independent (but well respected) scouts who do their own rankings. None of these publications or individuals are associated with any of the teams.

Now, mlb.com has their own rankings, but they are supposed to be objective rankings as well, as they're not associated with any team in particular.

Oh you are right - the "top prospect" level is Portland. That is, guys who aren't that far away from Boston. But a lot of the Sox prospect muscle right now is at Greenville, and Margot is in Salem. The top 5 ranking for the farm system is not unreasonable, but the prospects are not at Portland ... yet.

thanks - I think that there is definitely talent here but not a lot in Portland which is a little different.

Masterson pitched very well today. rodriguez isn't (shouldn't be) going anywhere . What to do? Somebody goes to the pen. The idea of a 6 man rotation when you can strengthen your bullpen is ridiculous.

I don't trust Masterson. He is a bullpen/long man.

Hey hey hey - over the hill? tee time? sounds too close to home for me. Stick him the bullpen right beside either Wright,Kelly,Bucholtz,or Porcello.

That's more like it!

I imagine Masterson is going to get traded. I was reading a report from someone calling him a "#2 or #3 pitcher" and was a potential trade target for that team. Ignorant or not, if someone was willing to take half the contract, I imagine him gone.

I'll gas up my car and drive him free of charge.

If somebody thinks that Masterson is a 2 or a 3, then they must think that we are loaded! He is a bullpen guy at best.

Pat Light - another young arm that could be a big lift for the bullpen. He is worth watching. Right now I would give him a chance sooner than giving another one to Robbie Ross. I think that Masterson will still get an opportunity but I think that his train has left the station as well.

it would be nice if he would take when he comes up to Fenway instead of just watering the grass like he did on his prior visits .

I agree.

Just seems a waste to see him playing in Pawtucket.

It is a waste. I'm at the point where if someone isn't getting the job done I would like them to step aside for a while regardless of the money they make. JBJ should be back up there, Johnson should move before Masterson, and in all honesty as much as I like Napoli he should be sitting. Someone needs to have the balls to make to make the tough calls. It isn't about computer or scouting projections anymore. It is all about what have you done lately and some of these guys really have done nothing. Management have painted themselves into a corner they will have to get nasty to dig their way out. As much as I like Miley's toughness, his tirade last night was ridiculous. If anything he was left in too long. Acting like he did doesn't make him competitive in my mind - it makes him look like a loser. I would love to see Johnson get his next start.

JBJ should be traded. He is playing well in AAA and has re-established some value. If he comes up and pees himself again, he will undo the value that he has rebuilt in AAA. Get something for him before he becomes a spare part.

I agree with everything in this post. But we both realize that the Sox will not sit Miley now. JBJ is most likely going to yield $.20 on the dollar in trade and the Sox will pull the trigger.

Dumb f***s.

This is all true. However I doubt that they will get much for him in any case. I have no confidence in the FO's ability to swing good deals.

Other than Hannigan and Rodriguez, the Sox have not made good deals recently.

When JBJ had his cup of coffee this year he only played 3 games, all against top starters. What was the point? Just more mismanagement, it seems.

I was surprised that they sent him down so quickly. I thought they were going to try a platoon for a while, but they had little patience.

What would a package of JBJ, Johnson, and Barnes bring? JBJ is a nowhere man in Boston. Barnes is replaceable if his role is projected to be a reliever. It is a complete waste of time to keep Johnson in Pawtucket.

If Papi is not back with the Sox next year, Hanley becomes the DH, and JBJ has a spot in the OF. The question is, will he be able to hit big league pitching like he is hitting in AAA? I would hate for the Sox to trade him, especially if they have to sell low.

Maybe his ceiling is 4th OF/defensive replacement. Unless you really can get away with his subpar bat for superior CF defense. There must be some advance stats on how many runs he saves?

There are, and he's good.
