Owens would most likely need to go for Hamels but under no circumstances would I trade Swihart or Betts in any deal. The former is a top flight catcher who can hit and hit with power and can play another position or two and Betts is our new catalyst. Don't laugh but I wouldn't hesitate sending Bogaerts packing in such a trade. I know I'm leaving myself open on this but I really believe this guy is a counterfeit whose value might plummet like Bradley and Middlebrooks did.

While I respect your opinion of XB, I see him rebounding into something special.

Miley is the only one likely to be there for a long time. Masterson is on a pillow contract and Porcello is gonna leave via FA after the season. If this is a change of philosophy, then you cannot have a minus defensive SS or else you'll kill your staff.

Porcello has a home in VT and reportedly would love to be here. Already word is that he's interested in an extension. I don't think he is going to leave via free agency. But of course, who knows?

Cespedes had zero interest in staying in Boston, and zero interest in playing RF........or any interest in being team player.

Good return......but was Lester for Porcello worth it, since in the end, thats what it became?

It's not really this clean though, is it? It's really Lester for 2 months of Cespedes, a year of Porcello, and whatever the $22m (minus Porcello year 1) that Lester would have received is turned into. Ultimately, trading Lester will have very long term repercussions, more than many Sox players I bet. It could be good or it could be bad, but it is a catalyst for a big reboot.

Cespedes has been adequately replaced by an equal malcontent - Hanley Ramirez. Same guy that played in Portland all those years ago. Hope he hits!

Cespedes became disenchanted when he got traded to the Red Sox after he realized that he wouldn't get to face our pitching. He'll be fine with Detroit, because he will get the opportunity to rake our mediocre pitching.

Dear Lord, can you please be just a little bit less whiny? Do you hhave anything positive to say ever?

Oh for God's sake, that is not being whiny. That is being from New England. It is a Red Sox thing. Positive - Let me see - I like Sandoval at third base. I was a history teacher so I like the fact that it repeats itself - Ramirez for Ramirez in left? I will definitely be positive if he stays healthy and hits.

In all fairness, Cespedes has a career .667 OPS against Boston.

Stays healthy isn't a given. But he'll hit, and remember, he reached out to Boston, not the other way around. And it's funny you like Sandoval at third base 'cause i didn't like the signing at all, but i still try to see some good coming out of it.

Also, if "history repeats itself", we won two WS with a Ramirez patrolling LF. Food for thought.

Good show cp. I was a history teacher myself, 35 years worth as well as a baseball and football coach. And it is a Red Sox thing no matter where you're from. We're an impatient bunch and for those of you who have followed the team for a helluva lot longer than I have you have my undying respect.

I've followed the team for "helluva of a longer than you" , and exclusively too. That doesn't mean i have to be annoyingly impatient about everything Red Sox related all the time.

Ted was being Ted. Of course, he still thinks as I do that our pitching might still be our Achilles Heel despite the trades, but there is no doubt that Cespedes had to go. We need a solid starter and Yeonis made it clear he was going FA after 2015. I don't know why but I'm suddenly feeling a lot better about our chances next season after what we did yesterday. However, and a big however it is, we need that No. 1 guy to close the deal, and if I can be greedy I wouldn't mind a good No. 2 to challenge Porcello for that role.

Off to 24 Hour Fitness for my three hour workout. Friday is always an extra exertive day. Catch you later Pal.

THIS. I don't love the Sandoval signing - especially when it turned out Josh Donaldson was available. But there is enough potential in the Sandoval signing to see value and even a little bit of improvement, enough that I won't be sticking pins in my Cherington voodoo doll or anything.

What I will offer on their moves this offseason is that as much as the Lester business hurts (and it does) ... the Red Sox are better equipped to handle the marathon of the regular season pitchingwise than they were last year. Where Lester's loss hurts in particular will be if boston is lucky enough to get to big fall baseball games. But as of now, I think the Red Sox are plus in 3 of the rotation spots, and maybe 4. With some offensive improvement, that can get the team solidly into the 85-90 win fray.

I do like the Sandoval signing. Fills a gap the right way in my opinion. This is an opinion board - correct? I like reading yours. Occasionally they make sense to me. As for me saying anything that could be taken as a personal affront, won't happen. Not my style. You want to take shots at me - feel free. I just retired as a fairly successful basketball coach after 44 years. Seen, heard it, done it once or twice before. I also believe that it is possible to win with good people. I am glad Manny could hit but in essence he was a cheater and a buffoon. I am in hopes that Hanley R. will not repeat his stupidity. I guess we were fortunate in some ways that we had Manny on our side. He could not have survived in an environment where he actually had to be coached.

Your posts are a delight to read. I might not always agree but do think about what you say. Plenty of humor in there as well. Keep them coming. Just got off the golf course myself.

Sweet Jesus Christ... Get a room.

I think it would be hilarious to see a Hamels for Bogaerts trade, followed by a Stephen Drew signing.

I don't think the Sox want anything to do with the extra year Hamel wants guaranteed to drop his no trade clause to the Sox. Stephen Drew - that ship has already sailed.
