I also find it interesting that a report is coming out saying that "the Red Sox are out on Shields", as if they were "in on Shields" until today.

I still feel like teams are feeling out the market for Scherzer before they make a move on Shields . If max can be had for 165m or 175m, it in my opinion would be smarter than 110m for Shields. I think the red sox are in on everyone to some degree at the right price and contract. I still see him going back to Detroit but I think Boras is just waiting and waiting and having private meeting with teams on his client.

Don't get me wrong I like Scherzer and Shields but Scherzer is the legit ace and has less wear and tear on his arm than Shields as far as innings pitched. Hes younger and he shut the red sox down in game 1 of the 2013 ALCS. He is the ace we have needed since I would say Pedro retired.

Shields is a legit ace. People have been overlooking those numbers, but over the last four years he's led the league in innings, and been in the top 5 or 10 in other major categories. 3.17 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, 233 Innings.

The real problem is age, unless the Sox see value in picking up a veteran with World Series experience to lead a staff of 20-somethings and the current group of prospects.

Pal, I've been surfing the net trying to find the article that Olney wrote about Henry putting Lucchino on the shelf.....again!!!!!. Know where it came from and could you download it if you do find it. I really want to hear what the owner had to say and whether that is just to placate all of us or whether he will go the extra mile and a half and spend what's needed to get us that No. 1 pitcher we need.

Olney's stuff is usually premium, so I haven't seen it. I read the snippet on MLBTraderumors.

Mitchell Boggs is now a Red Socker

Depth signing.

This guy is typical of relief pitchers. He may come in handy this year.

Congrats to Pedro. The greatest pitcher I've ever seen.

I am very pleased for all 4 of the inductees. I would like to think that the 3 pitchers were no brainers but who can tell by the way the voting goes on occasion.

Great day for Red Sox fans cp. Pedro left us in a little tizzy fit but he never lost his love for the Red Sox and now he's back working for the team. AND...he will enter the Hall of Fame wearing a Red Sox cap. Thinking about going to Cooperstown for that event this summer.

Start printing the playoff tickets. Can this Boggs make himself disappear like Wade Boggs? I think he is a poor man's Bobby Jenks.

Mitchell Boggs cameo on Cheers was funny.

Mujica was pretty scary until late in the season, Workman is much better suited for the pen than the rotation where he was terrible last season, and Breslow is coming off a terrible season after a solid one in 2013. I don't know much about Varvano but he is not rated as an end all either. Keeping our eyes open for good relievers is a must I believe because of the questions some of us have about our starting rotation.

There will be more. Cherington will be keeping his eye out for relievers anyway. Year to year performance for relievers is more or less totally unreliable. But there are a lot of live arms.

@PeteAbe: Per @ClearTheBases the #RedSox have DFA'd catcher Dan Butler. Presumably that would be to make room for LHP Craig Breslow.

Sorry Dojji!

This does make the Sox sort of thin at catcher.

At least until the God Like Swihart is ready or brought up.

I wonder if Butler signs a minor league deal with the Sox. Is that even possible?

Lavarnway and Butler gone. Hmmm.

The uber elite Nick Punto has found a new home in Arizona.

He's so elite, the A's are paying him 2.75M to play elsewhere.

Ben is reportedly not finished building the bullpen. All is quiet on the starter front. I think we should be prepared to accept that he is done building the rotation and that he is prepared to play with his hand of a pair of 4's, a pair of 5's and a 2/3.

"Cardinals Exploring Top-End Starter Acquisition"

Red Sox fans must be jealous of that headline.

Not really impressed by it. The Cards really don't want to spend that kind of money. At least when I think about the past 8-10 years.

I really doubt that they will cough up their top prospects, either.

Screw the pussy Cards, anyway. Their fans are pukes. Aside from the one on our board, that is.
